  • It's been awhile since I've seen racing as awesome as what I saw last Sunday at Salem Speedway. Headliners include the Diesel Boys Great American Stocks, the Pro Crafters Salem Super Cars and the Crown Vics performing on the high-banks. Interviews include Will Kimmel, Salem Track Master Chuck Barnes, Sr and Chuck, Jr., 4-time track champion Brian Bayer, ARCA veteran Joe Cooksey and a host of other stars from Salem. A nasty practice crash right out of the gate set things back for defending track champion Heath Helton, Michael Sharp and Marcus Elliott; but the racing from there was off-the-charts amazing! Join me, the History Mystery Man, as I revisit my old stomping grounds for a unique look at one of the most legendary and storied short tracks in American history...Salem Speedway since 1947! Enjoy!

      Owosso (Mich) Speedway "was" a fast, high-banked, half-mile beast in it's day. Saw everything there from Supermods, (World record broken.) to School buses. It closed for a few years near the end of WWII, and housed German POW's.
      Haven't been there for more than 30 years, but the current owners (2024) have done an absolutely amazing job of updating, and revitalizing the 3/8 ? mile track. Much respect to them, AND the fans for supporting a facility built in the 1930's. Well done!🏁

It's such a thrill being there at the track. It leaves an impression on all of your senses; hearing those engines roar and the tires squeal, feeling the vibrations of those cars while sitting in the stands. Last time I was at Salem Speedway, I was doing sound for a friend’s band and a car dealer had all the new trucks on display out in the parking lot. Not long after the racing started, one of the cars either broke an axle or lost a wheel/tire and it went bouncing out into the parking lot. Luckily though, no one was hit by the tire - however, it bounced right into the front of a brand-new truck and just destroyed the front end. Good times!
    If you get a chance, definitely go to Salem some time. It’s a great track.

    Thank you so much HMM for posting this video. I've never been to Salem, so watching this video is the next best thing. It gives me a good idea on what it's like being at the track...the atmosphere of the pits, the high speeds, the quality of the race cars. I always remember Jason Basham telling me how much he liked running there, now I can see why! The track and facilities look great, just wish there were more fans showing up.
    The Crown Vics are a cool class, along with some types of mini stocks, these are the last true stock cars still racing. The cars look well prepared, but still affordable to a budget racer like myself. The street stocks are crazy! No rear spoiler and 8" tires grooved Hoosiers must be a huge handful at those speeds. And crash damage...well I doubt there are many small hits. Much more fun to watch than to be in the race, especially if it was my own car. lol The Super Cars are a great idea, lots of old ARCA cars out there and if you take care of them and have some luck you can get years out of a 602 crate. I think there was/ is something similar down south. Brad Teague, Bob Schacht etc. ran in that series. Happy to see Joe Cooksey win, a buddy of mine that crewed for him years a go and speaks very highly of Joe.

    • @HistoryMysteryMan
      @HistoryMysteryMan  3 месяца назад +1

      Same here...so happy to see Cooksey win that race...that, for me, was the best part of the day. And yes...he's a great guy, as is his brother Mike. Salem is an iconic speedway, full of history, tradition and good old-fashioned fun...love the place. The Super Cars are also running the 8-inch Hoosier Comanches...wild. Nice to see Jason Basham win the Crown Vic feature at Florence last weekend. HMM

    • @greggrauscher34
      @greggrauscher34 3 месяца назад +1

      I never noticed the tires on the Super Cars, was thinking they were 10" slicks. The narrower tires probably put it a bit more in the drivers hands and are probably cheaper to buy too and last longer.
      That's cool that Jason won at Florence. I don't know them extremely well (only crewed for them at Cayuga) but they are a great blue collar racing family, with Lord knows how many family members having raced. Jason is close to my age so we talked a lot especially about racing that weekend. I remember the hot rumor at that time was ARCA was going to run at Darlington. He was very excited about that, but as you know it turned out to be only a rumor.

    • @HistoryMysteryMan
      @HistoryMysteryMan  3 месяца назад

      @@greggrauscher34 Yeah...Darlington is one track that I don't believe ARCA has ever raced at. Seems like they would have at some point, but not yet. But, since NASCAR owns ARCA, anything is possible going forward. I was also at the Cayuga race. If my memory serves me correctly, Justin Allgaier won that race. Thanks...HMM

    • @greggrauscher34
      @greggrauscher34 3 месяца назад +1

      That's cool you were at Cayuga for that race. Did you attend every race when you were working for ARCA? And yes you are correct Justin Allgaier won that race. It was a popular victory in the pits. I remember the Basham's being very fond of Justin and his family. Not sure how much you remember about that race, but I remember Scott Speed lost at least a few laps but really impressed me making them back up. Also Brad Smith ran quite well, he had shocks on his car on loan from Roush Racing, he stayed on the lead lap all day until a late race spin. Darrell lost a lot of laps early on when he lost power and we had to change a battery. I believe we took it out of Jason's start and park car and put it in Darrell's under green. The race was a huge financial loss for the track as it was a rainy day. (Plus the race was poorly promoted.) The stands were almost empty sadly.

    I spent a good portion of my youth at these type tracks. (Dayton, Kil=Kare, Shady Bowl, etc) and many of them are now gone. Only a few years ago I thought that weekly shows at local tracks were rapidly heading to extinction, but with new crate motors and more standardization, I think that the short tracks are coming back. Bettter racing than the follow the leader NASCAR stuff.
