- Today the theme is old, After taking a walk through my parts storage I had found 5 vintage speaker drivers, How I ended up with them or what they were from is unknown, However today we see what they can do when given power from a pro audio mixer !

*_OH NO, NOT THE VINTAGE_*
Jeremy Clarkson Classic!
*YES THE VINTAGE*
*NOT THE VINTAGE!! GAH!!*
Shit cheap decayed pieces of c garbage
The pfp matched your comment so well XD
Ironically, I’m watching this on a 1976 receiver I just restored with early 80s speakers I’m cleaning while watching. Ooh, vintage.
how does it sound?
Like shit
These Octagon speakers are made by Philips in Holland. Those you have was probably coming from an old radio. In the 1970, Philips made a fantastic woofer called AD8066, which is included in many high quality speakers. I use 12 of them in my PA system and they works very great. They have rubber surrounds and hard plastic dustcap
Was just about to make the same comment! As soon as I saw the basic design I thought Philips, then I saw the part number and recognised it as Philips. I used to work for them in the 70's.
Im from Holland myself and i also have a 8066 laying around, but i prefer the 10 inch woofer i have in my own speakers.
WoW I’m from Holland 🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱🇳🇱
I used to own a set of classic Philips speakers (probably from the late 70's to early 80's). These ones had the 8" woofers with hard dust caps and rubber surrounds, as well as passive radiators. I remember those speakers sounding really good. The woofers had some crazy excursion capabilities (around 25mm total I believe)
I love this Vintage Philips speaker
First speaker is a Norelco (Phillips) AD 8068. a pretty good 8 inch speaker capable of full range from about 60 Hz to about 12 kHz. Box it up in about 1 cubic foot and it will sound pretty good. Unfortunately you destroyed it. Second speaker is unknown, but not bad. Third speaker is another Norelco full range, possibly another AD 8068. . The Norelcos can be reconed and they can be pretty good. They will be pretty efficient and make a lot of sound with not much power. 5 watts will get you a nice clear full range sound. With cheap amplifier power, we are into a new philosophy, which is inefficient speakers and pushing them with lots of watts. Old way was efficient speakers with not much power. I had a pair of Altec A7 speakers which I could drive with a McIntosh MC 250 that gave good clear sound from about 50 to 15,000 Hz and 94 dB in 10th row of 1000 seat hall, measured at 5 watts per speaker.
Actually, those are philips ad8080 speakers, you can see the neat patterm
Ooooooohhhhhh vintage

I honestly forgot about this channel but I watched in 2013 for SO long and seriously just left this channel in the dust. Absolutely happy that I came back though and that you’re still in action!
Those octagon speakers are actually made by Philips. They've been used in a ton of different things, some not having a whizzer cone (the Philips D8444 boombox uses a variant of it as the woofer) and/or having slight differences in size. They all share the same funky basket design though. I believe they were made from the 60's-70's.
Speaker Nr 3 was an awesome smoke emitter, and Nr 5 had the afterburner. Merry Christmas Garret. Old tube radio speakers are often 5 Ohms.

I think the code 2155 is a date code so I think it means it was made on the 21st week of 1955
Week 21, May 23, 1955, May 29, 1955.
V i n t a g e.
I once hooked a really old vintage speaker to my amp and only the speaker for the low tones blew with a mild bass test. The wireing that splits up the audio works very well.
Glad youre still here Garret. Longtime fan since 2013
The first two were vintage Philips. ..they liked to use that AD(numbers) on their magnets...I know because I owned a lot of Philips and all of em had that AD thing on the magnets
Best lighting system I’ve ever seen!
2:13 you can clearly see the spark comming out of the wizard dustcap
Antique collectors everywhere collectively lose their minds! Lol
4:45 Voice coil smokes (like a locomotive)
Pretty sure the first speakers where Philips
Yes they are
The Motorola speaker was probably made in the late 40's - early 50's because the logo redesign was in 1955.
Most likely not. Note the aluminum VC former - speakers of that era only used paper formers. Aluminum was more commonplace starting in the 60's and 70's. Note the date code next to the manufacturer EIA says "703", implying it was made on the 3rd wk of 1967.
All I want to say is that, you just WOW and AMAZE me. Garret. Merry Christmas from new Zealand. And a safe and happy new year.
Love your videos
Hey Garret I like your videos. Everyone subscribe to him he's awesome
I saw one of ur vids in a furry comp
no one:
what the school parking lots sound like in the morning: 3:37
Have a Merry Christmas Garret, we love you man.
YES another speaker blowing video!!
Someone is going to be upset.
Love this kinda stuff oyeah 👍🤟
8:50. That one had the best sound out of the bunch. _BASS_ .
Could you help me I just gained a free Sampson tm500 and I only get sound out of one channel and both channels work but only through tape input (this mixer is about close to that one you have) but it will not have both channels on the mic channels but only runs stereo and on both channels on the tape, I get sound on left pan only
Not gonna lie, really hate seeing stuff this old get destroyed.
apersonthingy They’re all shit anyway
As MultiShit said (Excellent name, by the way) they're a part of history. They've been around for so long, and I just have respect for ancient technology that's been around sometimes longer than the oldest people on earth. It's like a portal to a completely different time. I just find it sad when this old and increasingly rare stuff gets destroyed. One day this stuff will be so hard to find, and perhaps eventually nearly extinct.
apersonthingy So wait.
You know how speakers work right? You know that apart from the AlNiCo magnet ones the others are exactly like new speakers but just older?
I can understand if something has contributed to audio equipment history or maybe it’s something rare and valuable and hard to find, but these are nothing, they don’t have history or any kind of special trait. They’re just old and forgettable.
If anything, these should remember us that people in 70s and 80s found these perfectly acceptable and that was stupid.
They’re just old pieces of metal and paper, nothing worthwhile nor worth anyone’s wasted time trying to save them
Jeremy Clarkson I’m completely aware they’re the same on the inside, the outsides are often quite different and unique compared to new stuff.
apersonthingy Because you never looked at new, good stuff.
There are plenty of manufacturers that use different and even beautiful designs for speakers drivers.
Morel, Sonus Faber, Focal, Scan Speak and many others and on top of that, they actually sound good
that's great! I don't think I've seen a speaker actually catch on literal fire before
i have, had a shitty laptop speaker set i took apart just to hook the speakers to a 500 watt amp i had. the first one didn't do much, just some smoke, the the second one i cranked the volume all the way up and played a very bassy track, the song hit a good note, the coil tore free of the spider, ripped the cone, and lit on fire, keep in mide this all happened within the span of one second. because i was in my garage, i let it burn all the way through, where the amp kept going and eventually the coil shot sparks everywhere and lit itself up even more. the thing eventually melted all the way through and all that was left was a lump of plastic and the metal basket. to this day i have not recreated it and condenser it the best blow i ever did.
Awesome
I’m watching with vintage speakers lol
those older speakers seem to put up a really good fight compared to the newer garbage. good video as always man :)
There are 3 ages of speaker evolution
The Vintage shit
The good Old
The new shit
Failure mode on these old, low power designs is typically going to be due to melting of the adhesive coating the voice coil and holding the coil former to the cone.
Great vid
Real fire- super cool
I love that flex on the last one tho, it has a lot of flex, and I enjoyed the show that it gave too *FIREEEEEE!!!*
That first driver looks like one phillips driver, i have one with very simmilar design!
I think the third speaker with the Alinco magnet and the felt dust cap was probably a Jensen. Unmistakable cone texture and gasket, as well as the model number, C4111, being similar to the well known Jensen model C8r. The other round ones with the 8 screw holes were almost definitely Philips as others pointed out. The really old oval one was, as we all know, a Motorola.
*Dont do that, that's vintage!*
i love this guy he is my favourite youtuber on blowing speakers he is funny and kind all of his videos a great and good to watch when i mean great i mean the best he will always will
I love your mousepad! Do you know where I can get one like it ?
The three octagon speakers are Norelco Philips 8 ohm drivers out of house tube radios, the Motorola is from a MT (musical turntable), and the smaller alnico driver was out of a car tube radio.
Best RUclipsr To learn to about Speakers and how to blow and hook up the wires
Nice a new video. Could you blow a logitech or something next Time?
yes i can gust give me the money and i will
@HydraClipzz OG just as capable as he is mate
These speakers can be worth some money so if you find some that work they can be worth something. Also those speakers with weird baskets are Philips and the 6x9 is a Swedish speaker i think
*VINTAGE*
Nice :)
2:16 even for that little cone the coil is small
Looks like the cat wants in on the action lol.
the last one was one of the best overall speakers u have blown up imo.
Is that a maracat sticker under the speaker. That last speaker Jenson made some of them.
Finally ive seen some old speakers making smoke
OOOOOO FIRE
Why did you blow some vintage speakers wich were in good conditions?
Garret I’m gonna be changing out the speakers in my car soon Bc they all foam rotted really bad and now they’re blown. Want me to send them your way to have some fun with them when I get them out? 😂
Them vintage speakers they were built tough dammmm
I’m a little late, but the reason the speakers are turning on and off in short little spirts, is because the amp is protecting the speakers. I’ve tried blowing speakers with a 2000s amp and it did the same thing. Protecting the speakers
Garret is back!
I have an east german RFT speaker rated for 10 watts...
I gave it 50 watts, and it lasted for half an hour, but it didn't blow up, just started to rattle like hell...
These are tough things!
You could always blow a pair of B&W Nautilus speakers and have the golden eared audiophile brigade crying into their prosecco!
I'm glad you stop cursing LOL. Nice video by the way
The octagonal one i believe is a Philips driver, it was certainly used in lots of Philips gear in the 70s. It is rated at 5w, 8R.
7:39 OH! whoa! I got shocked through the knife
How does the amp survive all that shorting and sparking?
Song?
1:15 i Have this. It came out from old school radio station speaker
Like the CV's on the background
Yeah what model are they
Yes, AD8066 is this Philips drivers Garret
Number 2 was a trooper.
By the way, I love your channel, Garret
I love this Vintage Philips speaker. I want to buy a pair but I can't find them for sale
The octagon speakers are Philips AD8080 speakers which has the neat pattern, and there are 4 and 8 ohm variants of it. They don't last long at all because they are 6 watts!
The Speaker is from Phillips, I couldn’t find the year.
That last speaker driver was playing a REALLY hot song.So hot, that it bursts into flames. ROFL!
cute pets!
It's awesome to see you literally coming back with lots of new destruction videos lately.
Always good to see you keep destroying old vintage stuff. It hurts from time to time... yet it is kinda fun to watch. :'D
Oh and by the way: because of you I discovered the furry fandom back in 2010. Thanks for turning me into a furry degenerate. I love it.
I have to agree some stuff is hard to wreck for a video however the amount of stuff I have here is absolutely gross, there was a mint condition Windows 95 laptop donated people are going to lose their minds
@@GarretClaridgeMeerkat some of those older amps and receivers from the 70’s and 80’s that you smashed was kinda hard to watch, yet interesting, because I never thought those things were such tanks, but from what I’ve seen, they can take an absolute beating
@@GarretClaridgeMeerkat10:20 it's my function can you guess what this reference is from? Hint it is a dark animation movie with appliances
DAM that treble!
cats love VINTAGE speaker cones!
I know that song that was playing at the first thing u told us it is called zero to zed - fight
A few of those look like the speakers that smoked up the entire room in an older video.
4:36
Jesus Hubert Christ, that thing is a smoker!
Ohh shit ohh shit ohh shit ohh shit(LOL :))
No more blowouts using AC outlet? Why?
you should make fruit bowls out of the baskets of thoose cool looking baskets from the speakers :)
Ure the best youtuber
8:50 I think that’s an antique car speaker
Wow, speakers sure have come a long way! They sucked! That 5x7 sure lit the place up though :)
Vintage speakers are still the best!
What mixer did you use?
I liked the last speaker you blew out
Hey Garret Claridge!! Happy Holidays!! 🎄🎄🎄 #GarretClaridge #HappyHolidays #Meerkat #BlowingSpeakers
That tune would have worked well in Shinobi or Streets of Rage. Yuzo Koshiro would have been proud!
I had a pair of hone telefunken speakers. They had the oval woofer in them and blew them. So many people gave me negative comments about blowing such classics I took the video down lol
The first one is a philips fullrange in 8 ohm
I have the “AD8081/M4” Philips (made in Holland) speakers
8 watts, 4 ohms (1973)
Pretty good shape too!
I made a video about it!
Speakerfreak95 cried watching this lol
Did you poke them by any chance?
2:17 Sounds like a clock ticking.
