When I was little boy, my mom would knit and drink coffee with some of the neighbor ladies. I would watch them fascinated by what they were doing. They laughed a lot so I thought knitting must be fun. I asked my mom to teach me and she did. I am now a 65 yo old and I have loved knitting my whole life. I am at my most calm when knitting. Some days I just can't wait to pick it up and go!! The rhythm and music the needles make as the yarn goes through my fingers is so Zen to me.

R.J. you simply amaze me. 😂😂😂. I'm 68 yrs young & have had 2 major brain infections that have caused me to forget alot of my early lifetime. I had a foster Mom who was super awsome. Everything was hand made. Quilts, dresses (treddle machine), embroidery, & tatted lace on blouses. Needle lace on slips & underwear. Sweaters were knitted & coats had actual "real" fur on collars. Yes it was hard work .But we grew our own food in our garden. Plus we had a couple of cows & sheep & a couple of mulberry tree's for silk worms. Yes my grandparents knew how to knit silk stockings! They had a silk factory in Smithfield, Utah. You have helped open up parts of my brain i thought was gone. Thank-you!
Would you consider doing a video about how to read a pattern and maybe follow it at the same time (making a step by step video) so we could see hands on what it means in practice? I've been missing something like this and I believe it might help many beginners like me. 😊

I've been crocheting for several years now and I feel quite comfortable working on different projects and difficulty levels. Knitting, however, is a completely different story. i’m so thankful for this video. i finally got the confidence to make a sweater and it turned out great! (plus, as someone with body image issues, it’s sooo nice to just make it to fit and not worry about size number or counting stitches)

Perfect timing for me! I finished a pair of socks and am ready to start my first sweater...only problem is I don’t feel like swatching 😅 (so I started a new pair of socks 😅😅), so this is a good nudge; I was planning to do this type of sweater. I like the colorwork and the surprise ending! A very nice commemoration.

Looks like he did a tubular cast on . I learned it yesterday from Marley Bird’s video for a Provisional Tubular cast on. So much easier than others.

I am twelve and I really like knitting and this guy has helped me ever since I started knitting at 11 years old and he is a great teacher my siblings are all older than me and think I’m an old lady and it’s a funny joke.
Let them laugh. Make your mom or other female a super soft scarf by knitting. My dad has monster-big hands and he knits. It looks like a magic trick when he knits because his hands are so big compared to the yarn and knitting needles. My dad went to tatting. He works with the tiniest threads and does dainty work with his monster-big hands. Historically the finest (the fanciest) work was often done by the men in the guilds and the regular good enough knitting was done in the houses by women and children. Check out Arne and Carlos. Arne learned to sew the Norwegian way from his grandmother and other females in his house but they teach every one to knit in that country in schools. My uncle made a cotton fabric quilt. Being a wet nurse is girlie. Knitting is not girlie. Enjoy what you enjoy. Think the way you want to think and pick your own friends. If your friends like something you do not like, do you force them to not like it? Of course not.
I agree. Let them laugh. I started embroidering, crocheting, sewing, and painting when I was ten and now that I’m 27, I’m one of the only adults I know with hobbies. AND it’s a real skill. You can create things out of virtually nothing.
I started knitting when i was 10 and i am 21 now, still knitting!! Keep it up :) dont be discouraged. Theyre probably just teasing you bc youre the younger sibling. Everyone else thinks its very cool and awesome that you can create things. Keep it up!!! Practice makes perfect :)

I've been crocheting for 45 years and never had the patience to learn to knit. This fall my Aunt asked me if I could knit her some dishcloths because the crochet dishcloths are too thick for her liking. To date I think I've knit close to 50 dishcloths. When I took up knitting again after taking two a decades' break, I found one of your beginning videos and watched it and picked it right back up again.
Now I've been wanting to learn how to knit a Raglan sweater and honestly there are a lot of people out there saying "read the pattern and do your increases here and here" but they don't actually knit the difficult bits to show you. I'm so grateful to you. Thank you once again for presenting a difficult concept in a simple, logical way.

This is the best video for knitting a sweater. Nice to see a man enjoying knitting too. Thanks. When you did the decreases on the sleeves, did you do them every 1 inch all the way down? Or did you change it up?
Thanks. I'm the same when I start knitting. I'm not quite sure how it's going to turn out. I have an idea, but no ready plan. I just measure the knitting on myself and adjust the knitting as I work on it. That's what's fun. The knitting becomes more creative then.😂❤
This is the least intimidating top down sweater tutorial I’ve seen yet . Thank you so much I finally feel like I can give it a try!!
If I may, and believe me, I'm no expert, but I find it easier to begin the sleeve dead-center under the arm, and I use magic loop, to avoid stitch markers and double pointed needles (I'm not a fan of either). Also, because I'm a numbers guy, I write down everything involving stitch and row counts, so I can get my sleeves to match without worrying if I'd forgotten something. Thank you for the video, the sweater looks great!

I knitted along with this video to make my husband a sweater and since I finished it the morning of Thanksgiving, he wore it to our family dinner. He loves it and everyone was impressed! My first completed, wearable knitting project (I usually stick to crochet.) and beginner friendly. Going to start one for myself this weekend. :)
I found your how to knit 🧶 video last year, snd wish I had found it sooner… I can do the basic stitch and not a pro lol. But I am really good at it,. I am going to watch the video with the pearl stitch soon. Very glad I found your You Tube videos! Fantastic job on the sweater!!

That was helpful, thank you. I watched someone else's video on the collar I wanted and she did what you did. So basically you split the top into thirds. The 1st two thirds went evenly to the front and back, and the last third was divided into half for the shoulders. Am going to try a top down sweater with some nice Peruvian wool I have.

Loved your video and your finished sweater, RJ. You had me mesmerised throughout. I've been knitting for over 50 years but I've never yet knitted a garment top-down! How crazy is that?!
Loved seeing this. Is there a formula/chart for how many stitches to plug in for various sizes? For instance, I am XL woman's size so how many cast-on stitches would there need to be and the breakdown for the 4 sections (given that I knit according to gauge for a particular yarn/needle size) to get an idea of my particular numbers. I am going to look for an online app to make it easier with my measurements, but it will help if you have ideas. Thanks!
I just purchased a book that gives charts for # of stitches based on gauges for various styles of sweaters. It's called Knitter's Handy Book of Sweater Patterns.
@@wandab3843 That's a great book. I've been knitting for decades, but have referred to that book many times.
He didn’t start increasing until after the rib neckline. The amount of stitches you start with depends on the size neck opening you want. He used a number of stitches divisible by 6. I believe the idea is that you keep increasing until you have the width of the sweater you want. Pick a sweater that fits you well and measure between the armpits. Keep increasing until your front gets close to that size.

this was incredibly helpful! i knit in the round a lot (as i make many hats), but every sweater i've made, i've made in panels! it was very difficult to find a good initial starting spot into adding sleeves and making a sweater in this way. thank you!!!

this is my first sweater that im makeing i been knitting for 2 in a half years
I am planning to knit a top down jumper for myself, when I can purchase my yarn. This will be my first attempt of a adult size. Baby top down cardigans are my favourite to knit. I love the tip of using blue stitch markers and pink stitch markers for the back and front of the jumper. Will be a good help to me. Thank you. 🙂🧶

Thanks RJ, i have made several of these over the years, but at 83 I forgot knitting a cable Topdown, could not get the cable to fit in panel, because I only increased in front of marker not after, OMG did this for hours on end, off course the same result cable way off, thanks for your video to remind me how to do my baby sweater...Thanks Again!!!!
I don't think I'm ever going to go on a sweater knitting journey cuz I'd never come back. : ) Meaning, it is to hard for me and I'd never finish. Love your channel.
Knitted top down it is really very complicated and confusing, especially if you are knitting a pattern or colourwork. Knit a bottom up sweater and use a pattern for it. It will be so much easier and more straight forward. You will get the satisfaction of having finished one piece at a time. It will sit better, hold its shape and last better if it is sewn together. You will definitely manage it. Knit a simple shape in one yarn without too much shaping or complicated stitches. You can pick one up for next to nothing in an op shop or buy from etsy very cheaply. Choose a DK weight pattern, probably knit on 4mm needles, nothing 4 ply. Start easy. You can always come back and try a top down when you have made a few other sweaters first. To be honest, all this calculation, short rows, partitioning is too much for an enjoyable first sweater.

I tried to get my blind great granny to share her recipes with me. I watched her cook and she would grab a handful of flour and I’d say “wait how much flour was that?” Your video reminds me of her 💕 knit for a long time til you finish the shoulders then every inch or so do a decrease 😂 I make my own patterns for things too. I made 3 mittens before I was satisfied it fit the way I wanted it to. I’d hate to make 3 sweaters before I was happy. I did enjoy seeing the overall big picture of how a sweater is made it does seem less intimidating : )

I think the hardest thing is to get the shape and sizes right for one's body. I can see the chest area is quite snuggly and the armpits are pretty tight. I wonder if there are ways to avoid that.

I made a wool sweater with raglan sleeves in almost the same colors a couple of years ago (something to do during Covid time .) I like the way it fits smoothly around the shoulders; much less bulky...
This is an excellent knitting video for me. I have always been intimidated by making sweaters but this video is very encouraging and makes me think it may be possible for me!

I am making a cardigan where the collar is the very last part of the pattern after all the pieces have been assembled. I've never done this before and am a bit nervous. Could you do a video about how to add a collar to a finished sweater and/or cardigan? You were the one who taught me to knit in the first place so I'm appealing to you the strongest. I've been watching other videos but hardly anyone zooms in on what they are doing so I get a clear picture.
