- ** I now have a video where I successfully repair an outboard with this problem: • Fixing a stiff steerin... **
In this video I (attempt to) repair the steering bracket of a Yamaha 50HP four stroke. The steering is completely seized and unfortunately turns out to be unrepairable so I'll be revisiting various methods of un-seizing outboard steering once the replacement unit arrives. There is still plenty see in this video relating to the disassembly of the mid section, but all up you couldn't call it a good day in the office with regards to the outcome...
This video is a great example of what a little bit of, or should I say, what a lack of preventative maintenance will cause. Great video, as usual.
Thanks so much for this video, The tilt tube is seized on my Haswing electric outboard after less than a year in use. I will now go back to the task with a good idea how to fix it!
just recently did this exact steering pin repair on my brothers 90,h.p. mercury 4 stroke 2006 model, steering pin was heavily corroded from salt water use, replaced pi n and motor mounts &lower steering yoke, very similar to this above video, very good job he does here, wonderful mechanic he is.talented.!
Corrosion is such a nightmare in boats. How simple the manual makes these jobs sound!
+Dangar Marine hi i have a 25 2stroke yamaha 84 mod the pilot rod has the bottom end alloy block that holds it to the motor unbolted but it looks seized or is it fixed, i thought if i got that off i could slip the motor up and off the steering arm instead of taking the whole motor out,??
Suggestion, get yourself a set of ratchet ring spanners....AND thanks for your fantastic content on this and the many others I have watched
Thank you all. Love the video's
Manford Robinson Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed. I'm actually making another video of doing this exact job again on a smaller motor at the motor at the moment. Hopefully this one will be fixable!
Hey Dangar I have a 1998 50hp Yamaha that has water exiting around the oil drain plug. I have been told that this is normal and I have also been told that it is not normal and that I have a crack or a bad seal. Any ideas? Great videos! Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
I have 94 Johnson 140 looper I have a corroded steering arm I’m wondering if I can get it off without taking the power head off???
... I’m also toying with the idea of stick welding a piece of steel to the old one ..any suggestions would be appreciated ...
If the tilt tube is seized as in this video, remove both nuts and on one end put a stack of inch centre washers. replace the nut..warm the tube and then tighten the nut to effectively pull the shaft through the yoke...other methods are to drill a hole in the centre of the tube right through and use a pry bar to turn the shaft
Putting a hole through the tube so you can turn it to break the corrosion is a good idea. I'll give that a go next time. Thanks for sharing. :)
Stu, great video. Love your channel. I have a 2012 F250 Yamaha. Steering works easily and I am keeping it greased. However, I dropped the lower unit to change the water pump and saw a few flakes of rust laying on the shifter cover. Looked up and saw some corrosion on the iron bracket tube and looked up the tube and saw surface corrosion. Salt water boat. As long as the engine keeps pivoting easy, am I good? Is there any thing I should be spraying on the bottom yoke and spline area or on the inside of the entire vertical tube to slow rust. Like I say, I grease the bracket and it works good.
As I've said before you're the best. I love your videos. Do you happen to have one where you convert to or from a tiller handle?
Thanks Rob. Not at the moment, but I do have a friend who needs that job done, and he also happens to be a professional cinematographer so there'll definitely be a vid!
Dangar Marine you're the man! I'm looking forward to it.
I have a Johnson 9.9 and iam thinking there is a bushing gone bad under the power head on the top of the leg just in front of the transom clamps. Can’t seem to find a video on it and I’ve never had one apart. Anything you can do to help me out.
I've got a 1990 yamaha 8 horse 2 stroke that I just got running again, but I'm having a tough time getting the tilt-up to work correctly. It would seem like a simple fix, especially after having pulled the carb and everything else out, but I can't for the life of me figure out how the parts down there are supposed to work.
It looks like everything is on there -- no obvious snap offs, but once the motor is mounted on the transom, I can tilt the motor up if I reach up under the mount and free the tilt lock piece that retains it by hand, but Its almost impossible to get to -- there has to be an easier external way to free it. Any recommendations for where I could go to see how the system is supposed to work, or if this is perhaps a common problem (unlikely)? Again, it's confusing because they're big simple parts, but it's got me beat. Once I get it free, the motor tilts up fine, it just seems like the shallow water lever (I think that's what yamaha calls it) doesn't really engage anything, and I think it should be doing something.
thanks for the great videos man
This is actually a common problem, and a tough one to diagnose in comments as it is often just that things get slightly bent. To make things worse there are a few different designs that work very differently. I have a boat in on Friday that has a similar problem so I'll be sure to record a vid on it.
Hey ... I have same problem with an engine... Managed to take apart the engine from the bracket now the problem is that the lower bracket part where the lower mount screws (the one that yours broke) are wont go out and been hammering it but it doesn't seem to move at all.
Do you have any suggestion or idea how to take it out so i can pull out the whole shaft...
Many thanks
Hi, first of all thankyou for your videos and tutorials, they are very informative and very well explained. Im not a mechanic but you have given me the confidence to have a go with working on my yamaha 60hp 2 stroke. Thankyou
I have a question... im going to attempt to change the tilt tube on my yamaha and im sure its going to give me alot of resistance being 28yrs old, is it possible to remove one of the grease nipples and replace it with a modified grease nipple connected to a air hose to force some penetrating fluid into the cavity with a compressor?. Similar to your video showing how to lubricate control cables. Do you think this would help?
Hi,Forgot ask, would the adjustment be on the engine, or teleflex steering. Thanks again.
Hello!! How can I remove 1 broken screw on the tail of the Yamaha 50cv autolube outboard motor? It is lodged in the hole and it is difficult. Thank you
Do you have to take the engine out in order to take the swivel bracket off?
i hope the chooks are wearing the appropriate safety gear mate
Hi, more interesting your video, but, do you think is possible to remove the steering bracket with an idraulic press? The bracket is rusted. Thanks
You can, but the trouble with these brackets is that they don't have any flat surfaces on them so they tend to slip out. Certainly worth a shot though.
Hi, thanks, I've an idea to make a support for idraulic press, when try I make a video or some photo. Thanks a lot for your support and video, I've understand more from it
Si
You have some good videos mate.
Thanks Marcus.
do you have a video that shows how you removed the top half of the engine. I have a mercury 115hp which is similar to Yamaha. I have to replace the steering assembly bracket due to the "death bolt" breaking.
Hey there. Take a look at ruclips.net/video/dJpw9IJ9H1U/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/r9n-HU8ADuY/видео.html.
If I want to just pull out the steering tube but not replace the bracket do you still need to take out the motor?
The vertical tube that the motor pivots on, yes ruclips.net/video/dJpw9IJ9H1U/видео.html the horizontal tube the steering cable slides through, no ruclips.net/video/bwh65xem33k/видео.html
Can you do this on a smaller outboard, like an Evinrude 6hp, without removing the power head and lower unit?
Generally not. Take a look at the unseizing a steering bracket video. That is a small outboard (and was more successful!)
hi, is it ok for the motor to move up and down paralel to the swivel shaft, i noticed this as i greased the swivel, the grease comes out from around the top seal, but i noticed i could push the motor up like 2mm is this normal? there is no side to side or wobble just up and down parallel to swivel shaft.
thanks for the help
A couple of mm movement up and down is fine, nothing to worry about.
hi stu, can I use a lithium based high temperature wheel bearing grease to pump into the grease nipples on my tilt tube of my outboard?
I would be careful with it. Not all lithium based greases are marine greases. The big trouble with the pivot tube is that once that grease is put in it takes all this effort to get it back out.
My boat hard to turn left or right when on moving..do you have any suggestion
This video should help ruclips.net/video/tfMn6bGfAKs/видео.html If it only happens when the boat is moving at speed then you may be better of with hydraulic steering.
Great informative videos. I have a 1996ish Yamaha two stroke 85hp engine. My problem is, the tension on the teleflex steering is too slack, and not sure how to adjust it. Any ideas thanks.
By too slack, do you mean it is too easy to turn the engine? If so, it is usually on the engine where you can screw in a "brake" that puts extra resistance on the pivot bushing.
+Dangar Marine Hi, That is exactly the problem. When being trailered, the engine soon turns full lock, and under light power at sea does not hold a straight line with no hold on the steering wheel. Just not sure where to look. Thank you again.
Whats. That part called on 125 force it swivels and attacches on boat motor with a long pin called how to get off whats it called
what is your torch kit
This is the one. www.ebay.com.au/p/?iid=292140037029&chn=ps&&&chn=ps
Wish somebody would make a video on removing the protected parts/cover/case thing that goes from powerhead to foot can’t really describe what I mean but is the part that you see from the top of the motor to the bottom of the motor and is usually black or painted white and is what everybody sees from the outside of The motor.
There are generally just screws at the front edges by the transom. Sometimes you need to take the cowling latch off too.
Pity it could not be fixed.
Yeah, some corrosion is just so bad that it won't let go unfortunately.
some of these frozen bits need to sit in diesel for a few months before even trying to pull them apart. just try it.
Yes, if you've got plenty of time it certainly can help.
I've just spent all day on a mercury...same problem. Rubbish design never intended as a service part. The lower engine mountings are in backward to any sense of normality..I gave up and the engine is for sale spares or repairs. A 6yr old child could design better...mercury, yamaha...all wank!!
I think I ended up getting a new bracket from a wrecker the original one way so corroded. Nightmare!
Why are u working in a workshop in bear feet!!!!!!!!!!
Because I want to.
