Neon signs and displays are one of those conversation pieces that can have a huge impact on the visual aesthetic of any space! They have also provide some great lighting for a neon portrait such as I’ve integrated within my own photography stye! True neon has a unique glow and look to it that’s hard to replicate and have become quite a popular choice of decor for creative environments. In today’s video I bring you a guide for essentially starting and building out your own neon collection, featuring tip, tricks and some things I've learned!
We first take a look at what is neon, how it’s made! Then we take a look at how it’s become a super popular choice in photography studio environments and how I’ve used it in my own photography style. As we’ll I take you through how to spot “fake” LED signs posing as neon signs, of course finishing off with where I buy my authentic neon signs from at a low cost, how the shipping process works, and we take a peak at some of my own personal collection! If you’re looking to get into neon, or want to buy your first piece then this video is for you!

Thanks for this video! I was interested in what I thought was a neon sign but now I know what to look for. I wanted one with my name on it because it looked cool. And yes. I stayed to the very end. Reminded me of some of the Marvel movies where you stay all the way until the end

Hi J who, I actually do unbox the big Romeo & Juliet sign in this video. As for installing, simply mount like you would any other picture or frame.
So do the stores fit the voltage to every country they ship these neon signs to? When looking at Amazone it only says 5V on all of them, that's not compatible with my country voltage system🤔

I found your video while searching for a neon sign myself. I typically try to avoid Alixepress since its more known as a cheap chinese knockoff website, however that sign you got from Gamystye looked really awesome!
Are you going to cover neon signs a bit more in future videos? Cause I am honestly very interested in getting one from the Gamystye store, but im still kinda skeptical when it comes to Aliexpress.
I've ordered multiple Neon signs from Gamystyle without issue. I can confirm everything is authentic, it's certainly by no means the best out there but it's good stuff at a good price so far my experience has been. Use the links through the channel to buy if you can to support.

I've seen a bunch of those on Aliexpress. It'd be cool to see a comparison on the light output and quality between real neon and led neon-inspired.
They're just completely different materials, one is a glass tube filled with gas, the other a plastic tube stuffed with tiny leds and diffused. The Neon will likely always be brighter, but one fellow collective member pointed out you can't dim authentic neon so use it for somewhere that can be bright!

@@nicholasgrcia Hi Nicholas, yes it is from Amped & Co., the ghost is real neon. They sell both real neon displays, but I've also seen that they are now selling the "fake" LED neon as well. If you are unsure of something you can copy and paste it to me here and I'll look at it for you.

@@nicholasgrcia Hi Nicholas, yes that particular flamingo display light is authentic neon. Usually if it's "fake" it will say LED somewhere. But if you look a bit deeper in the description, it tells you that the product is "Hand-crafted glass filled with neon gas" this is how you know it's the real stuff. The "fake" stuff will be plastic with LEDs.

This video is ridiculous. Neon is simply fluorescent light fixtures. Applied to hand blown glass. That’s all it is. The reason “real neon” is being phased out is because led is taking over everything. There’s fluorescent neon, and led neon.
@@vedderstemple Actually that's not quite true at all, fluorescent light has no Neon gas running through it. Yes, they are closest to eachother and do share some do share similarities in their core conept of illumination through a gas reaction, however, they are still quite different. My main point of this video is largely to showcase the difference between LED lights being marketed as "Neon", as true Neon lights are their own thing with their own unique glow. Although I do mention that LEDs are cheaper, less fragile, and likely safer. So take it as you will,
@@FUTURESPACECOLLECTIVE Truth be told authentic neons don’t have neon gas in them. It’s actually a combo of 3 gases and different tinted tubes. The only neons with neon gas are the tubes with a red glow or colors that require red like pink or purple. Fluorescent is filled with mercury vapor gas. The point I was making is that neon is a style of lighting not strictly a type and that the process of wiring them has just changed with the times. The ballast has been swapped out with a driver and the gas has been replaced with diodes. Gas lighting in all forms had become inefficient in every comparable form. The distinction should be of traditional and modern.... not authentic and imitation. There’s nothing wrong with having a nostalgic passion for the old process but that doesn’t make the alternative any less real.
@@vedderstemple I am only trying to distinguish the difference for my audience between buying a plastic light up sign, and between hand-made glass blown tubes filled with gas, that has a much more defined glow to it.
I feel they are entirely different things, and don't even come close in terms of the look and style on camera.
It's a similar debate comparing film to digital. They are different things chasing a similar effect. I understand your main point is with the wording; but in my opinion small LED diodes is an evolution and a new medium altogether. Marketers should better distinguish these differences instead of showing one thing and selling another, as seen in the video.
Older underglow on cars use to be neon tubes. Now most people have leds strips under their cars and it really doesn’t feel the same. The neon use to glow from the underside of the car as well as bled light onto the road, while led strips seem to just project light on the car. Honestly hope it comes back more and more people get into the trade again!

In this case get LED Neon, and not the Glass Neon. LED Neon typically come with the dimmable function

Hi Sancho, if your referring to the "authentic" neon signs with the glass tubes, I don't know if I would fully recommend above your bed because they can be bright with no ability to adjust this brightness - they also MAY make a bit of noise. Perhaps the LED style neon may be more ideal in this scenario!

Does neon sign do some little noise when its on?
Some power supplies may emit a small amount of noise but very minimal unless your ear is up to it.
So I have a legit sign being made for my podcast studio. Do you think legit neon signs put off too much noise to record a podcast with no interference in a studio?
No, they put off a bit of noise but it's very minimal, as long as your more that 6ft away from the sign you should be fine.

Hey ClearSmoke, that is correct. I wouldn't say it's impossible to run off a battery but certainly not practical! Remember true neon is real glass tubes, the signs are heavier and much more fragile. You typically want to just mount a sign and leave it be.

Got it from Wayfair! The brand that makes the chair is called Modways, but it's hard to find now
Its kind of sad that fewer and fewer commercial establishments are using real neon anymore. More and more advertisers are switching to the newer fake.LED neon. The fake neon is usually not made of glass, has no high voltage power supply and just is not the same.classic look as authentic neon. There is something so special, so unique, so magical about real neon and it cannot be duplicated. The faux neon can look nice but falls way short of the real thing. Over the years I have collected a few old neon beer signs that are really beautiful. And more recently I bought a brand new real neon piece and I plan to buy more over time. Perhaps I'll eventually set up my own neon channel one day. Glad.I found your channel.

The best I've tried personally (from a cost point of view) that is real glass neon, are the guys who make the Romeo Juliet skull neon (link in description) Which is pretty much the topic I discuss in the video!
Do you know a trustworthy site to order a custom made sign?
I've never actually ordered a custom made sign, so I can't say for sure, but the Gamystyle supplier from the video may be the most cost effective alternative!

Yea the LED style neon is still cool, and I do forsee it becoming more popular in the future due to it's cost, and efficiency. But in my opinion nothing can replace the look of the traditional glass blown tubes.

Can anyone tell me about neon freak, I can’t tell if they’re genuine and they’re pretty expensive but I can’t tell if it’s worth it or a knock off.
Just took a look at them, all LED neon.
I have to say either i like the wiring on neon signs to be completely hidden and enclosed or nicely showcased in a tech-cyberpunk way and be part of the design. But when all the electrodes are just hanging about in the back it can look messy.
Fair point, it is very hard to hide cables when mounting in the middle of a wall let's say, I've done my best but there's only so many options unless you're willing to drill large holes into your walls and fish the cables through!

While I don't beleive the Neon signs to be huge energy hogs. (the power supplies are rather small). LEDs will always be more energy efficient however!

Led or NEON is better?
Depends how you define better. LED is cheaper, and dimmable among a few other advantages. Where as the real Neon glass tubes have a very unique glow and specific look to them.

Hey there, not sure what your referring too, perhaps you can provide some further information? In either case, I've never heard of neon factory.
Chinese manufacturers/sellers are wayy better priced rather than buying neon signs domestically.

I don't think it's fair to call led neon fake. Some led neon lights are gorgeous and DO give off a gorgeous light. Of course classic neon is cooler with the warm flickering and the glass. Both have advantages and disadvantages when compared.
Could u please tell me what this sign is worth ? Generally 💡. I will share the hell out of this. It’s a 2006 47 x 23” Budweiser bow tie neon out with a neon crown. Lol
Not exactly sure what it's worth. It's hard to assess value for something like this, as they do only last a certain amount of hours and it's hard to know how much "life" a sign that/s over a decade old or knowing how many hours it's been on. If it's any help, you can get a very similar sign from china for new 200-300 at that size.

@@gbaby9629 Ah didn't realize it's so large. A sign half the size is worth about 200, so maybe yours 300-500 new assuming you bought it from a china manufacturer similar to the one in the video. But like I said previously, I'm not quite sure how to appraise a used sign, given all the other variables associated with it.
