Monster pike at the end! One of the catch and release creeks in my house had a huge fish kill. A farmer had just finished putting down his fertilizer for the year. An unforcasted downpour happened and washed some of the fertilizer into the creek. Massive fish kill. The fish from upstream repopulated the lower sections of the creek. Accidents do happen but that particular farmer in your video seems negligent.

Farmers have a duty of care ... they should be mindful of the weather forecast for at least 10 days into the future... there are also perimeter distances around waterways that farmers must obey when spreading slurry... but they couldn't be arsed ...
The Irish regulations are (in part) ....
"Regulatory requirements when spreading slurry .
For two weeks following the opening of the spreading period, it is important to note that slurry must be kept at least 10 metres away from rivers, streams, watercourses and drains and reverts to 5 metres once this time period has elapsed."

I watch all your vlogs George love your enthusiasm when out fishing. I have been fishing the Lancaster canal for years it's one if not nicest canals iv fished. They have been getting away with it for years i am 66 now George and iv fished the canal since i was 14. Favourite basin was Ratcliffe wharf lane basin this is match and just pleasure session. There 3 basin, s there you was always guaranteed to catch fish. The farmers have got away with it for year's and somehow get away with getting prosecuted otherwise it would be one of the best canals in the country. The basins in question iv had 2 trips up this year got my day ticket from garstang fist trip fished for hour never had a bite before i got weeded out had to pack up. The second trip fished solid 6 hours had 2 bites one very small perch. Its the same with the glasson dock arm it was solid with bream roach perch even trout brown and seatrout and they had problems with the lock gates and salt water getting into the canal this was in the 70s first time this happened and i believe its happened again this years anyway George keep up the good work and keep the videos coming tight line's 🎣👍

I have George it uesd to happen a lot. I remember matches on there over 100 anglers regular. I had a good friend who was a angling journalist i his name was John Weedon wrote for the Angling times r local paper post and chronicle and wigan observer. He campaigned quite a few times about farmers letting spillages into the canal and the river ribble. John is no longer with us rip he lived and breathed angling but it always seemed to go on deaf ears. The glasson dock held massive shoals of bream they got wiped out same as the lancaster canal. He also complained about windamere pollution before i could drive in the late 70s during the old close season if we new someone who had a car perch catches on windamere was fantastic. We also fished the river Kent gilpin winster just fishing bomb on worm we would have some good catches. The gilpin and winster had a good head of roach they disappeared John being in the Committee of Wigan Angling Association would campaign about pollution and it would fall on deaf ears. Thats why WAA give up all the fishing sections on windamere kent winster gilpin lancaster canal because of the very poor fishing. The was also a big association called Northern Anglers we was all members of which no longer exist today due to the lack of anglers dropping out. I travel a 80 mile round trip to the lancaster canal living near haydock park racecourse and i would go on lanky when ever i could and only living 3miles from the Leeds and liverpool canal it really hurts me to see the canal in sutch a state so with your publicity George they might start listening and start doing something about these pollution incidents keep up the good work tight lines 🎣👍

Here in the Netherlands are regulations and rules when and how much cow dung the farmer can juse to ferilise his land.
The farmer do this when there is dry weather forecast and use ground injection so the cow dung go in the ground and dont spill everywhere by rain or laying on top of the soil.
Al the canals and ditches around the farmers here are full of pike and other species.
The farmer keeps the water healthy so he can give his cows the water from the canals to drink, water his crops and have fertile land at the same time(everybody happy)
I wish everyone a nice catch the next time you go fishing!!!

The UK has rules and regs, but it requires an effective regulator to enforce these. Sadly, the Environment Agency has been starved of funding and had its hands tied by the last Government that has allowed events like this to happen and the perps to believe they can get away with destroying and polluting the natural environment. The lack of morals and sense of entitlement by these individuals and organisations is a sad reflection of todays society.

In 2016 our club river had a devastating pollution incident. Instead of fertilising his orchards from an anaerobic digester, the digestate found its way into our river, taking out an estimated 15,500 fish including wild brown trout, eels and lamprey. The farmer had been compliant with the Environment Agency but was still fined over £60,000 by the Magistrates. The EA restocked with many thousands of chub, dace and roach but couldn't restock with fertile brown trout. It has taken most of this time for trout to return to our stretches but we are now catching wild fish again. As a club we are members of The Angling Trust and through Fish Legal claimed compensation from the farmer which went some way towards softening the disappointment of the pollution.

Annual profit from muck spreading without carrying out the proper checks = £10,000
Annual fines paid for muck spreading without carrying out the proper checks = £0
Since new legislation was brought in to protect canals and other waterways from pollution from farms improperly fertilizing in 2018, exactly no proceedings have been brought, and no fines have been issued. None.
The farmer settled out of court here, but an out of court settlement could be accepting a warning, or promising to observe the rules in future in place of other sanctions. It is not neccessarily monetary.
There is no deterrent against this happening, and the minimal consequences are a tacit encouragement. Even if the pollution is severe enough to warrant criminal charges being brought, any monies raised from a fine go to central government, where it is swallowed up, and the locals will never see a penny of it. All the businesses that lost out, and everybody who had to clean and decontaminate thier boats and other equipment, will have to carry the cost on thier own.
We have to keep the pressure on local government and the environmental agencies. This happens far too often, and the longer we stay silent, the more it will happen. Keep at them, and report very single instance you see.

Its not as easy as you say. The slurry is organic fertilizer. The farmer has to make large scaled agricultures because we are so many people as we are on the globe. Remember those farmers feed quite many people in your country and you cannot just stop him. In denmark we have precautions with zones near waters and so on to prevent this. This is not simple as you make it. The nitrogen in the slurry and one of the biggest nutritional needs of plants are also extremely soluable in water and therefore travels a long way in the ground. And also in high amounts make oxygen crash in waters

Surly he cant be allowed to be a farmer after numerus environmental violation. A government agench should close his facility down as the fatmer clearly have no respect either for nature or otherfarmes who will get a backlash from this. Good on ya George useing the platform.

We had the same thing on our river by a big business, emptying the wash water into the shuck then into the river and killed thousands of wild brown, sea trout and salmon parr, £2000 fine and hes done it a few times,

i am just saying ..looking at it it looks like there a hell of lot weed could that also be the cause of it.. as the weed grows it need,, Duckweed is a mass of small plants that group together to form larger “carpets” that we see on rivers. Most varieties of duckweed you are likely to see are native to the UK and are often put into ponds in gardens and rivers Though they can quickly get out of hand it not treated will know. The mass of plants can double in size every two or three days meaning it can spread quickly and The plants are eaten by aquatic animals and fish and , washed down through the system during heavy rain or die off during winter conditions... so that might be one problem the weed...that caused it.. and starving the fish of oxergen... good video and yes as every said it sad and i agree all fishemen should take there stuff home after i been fishing i always spend and extra 30 seconds just looking around my fishing area to see i dropped anyting anything..its

Do we know if Fish Legal have are aware or have been involved? They are usually very keen to ensure people who cause pollution are held to account. If there is clear evidence of further incidents by the same farmer then surely they need to be subject to further prosecution with a more significant fine or a prison sentence. The treatment of our waterways in pursuit of profit is an absolute scandal . There needs to be more done to highlight this appalling behaviour

  • @tonycamplin8607
    @tonycamplin8607 11 часов назад

The farmer was obviously the cause the pollution. However the real people to blame are the water authorities. They didn't take it seriously and take proper action, they obviously exist just in name and don't really care about the waterways. They have the authority to prosecute those responsible and force them to pay for at least the restocking,

  • @stuartchristie64

Farming nowadays is not so profitable, so you would expect if they get fined properly for the environmental impact, it should hit them hard and they wont do it again.
Unfortunately its not just the farmers, the amount of raw sewage that ends up in waterways - why the heck rainwater is allowed to enter sewage systems is beyond me - over 464000 incidents last year alone - let that sink in, over 1200 raw sewage incidents daily - it beggars belief.
The environment agency needs to start coming down hard on offenders, including every single water authority that allows this to happen.
fat cat bonuses and profits need to be quashed until our antiquated Victorian sewage system is fixed so the large majority of rainwater drains separately to sewage.
    Rant over

Where is the canal? Who is the farmer? Surely this is all in the public domain. This information could help others to be vigilant and hopefully ensure that either it doesn’t happen again or the perpetrator gets dealt with effectively and appropriately.

I won't tell you which one but if you remember the Boris Johnson swimbait(?) edition and my comment suggesting a Liz Truss plug, in view of her £243m cuts to pollution monitoring et al you can guess it's not a tory one.
Third offence is an incarceration, surely, as lessons have not been learned nor remedial measures taken?
