as a elderly man, trying to learn the usage of a machine, I find Jan's tutorials excellent, more 'showing' and less chating ! with very good camera angles, to show her methods, I'm getting quite expert !
Great information! I am currently living with family and using the kitchen table for my sewing, so I have to make sure everything is right where I need it at all times, because of little ones running around. This would be great for that purpose. Unfortunately, the mat hangs down at the perfect grabbing height for little hands. I’m saving this video for when I get my own place! Thank you for sharing!
Can you make it and rotate to the back of the machine so it has place for your sewing stuff but doesn’t dangle down? Or how about modifying so scissors and sewing necessities are to the left or right side of your machine? Right side is probably better since fabric goes through the left side of the machine. Simply ideas.
Re the scissors, how about attaching a stick-on hook to the side of your sewing machine and hang scissors from there? Away from little hands but still handy for you?
Jan, love the station mat. This is one way I am going to use it. My 98 year old mom lives with us. We have one of those hospital bed tables we use every day. As the table gets used to hold items stuff falls off. I am going to make your station mat to use on the table. I plan to attach Velcro to the underside of one side of the table and place Velcro to the underside of the station mat so I can attach the mat to the table. This way the pocket side of the mat is facing her. The pockets can hold a phone, remote control, personal items etc. the mat can also be used as a place mat at meal times. It’s so easy and fun to make i can make several so we can laundry and always have one for her table. I can also make seasonal mats to make her table more fun. Just another way to use your station mat. Thank you for the tutorial and sharing your pattern.
I love this comment it helped 😄 me to decide what to do with my brother cs7205 sewing machine I'm a beginner and I'm longing for some projects to keep me busy and thank you for sharing this with me today ❤❤
This is a great tutorial! I have never seen anyone make a pin cushion on the mat. That’s a great idea! Your mat is really pretty and cheerful! Thank you, Jan!
Great choice in fabrics & COLORS!!! I appreciate the free patterns for our private use plus the addition of a label !! My only suggestion comes from my experience. I sewed, on the corners on the back piece, a cute to finished size, a piece of the no-skid/no slide rug backing. This helped my machine, especially my serger, from hopping along. Great job showing us the details with very understandable instructions. I also appreciated the choices given for another way to accomplish a task. Fantastic video, extra cudoes to the surviving camera person...thry never die...and you work with nearly lethal weapons, ya know !!! 🎉🎉🎉
Your fabric combination is absolutely adorable. From tapestry scraps I made a quick cover for my sewing machine and a sewing Mat with pockets in it like you did many years ago. I also made one for under my surgery that had a pocket that would catch the scraps of fabric from surging.
I love this video. You make look like so much fun to make and so easy too. I like how you describe each step including details that people assume beginners know like the red line on your presser foot for the 1/8 inch guide. Thank you !
Love the pattern and will make one for my traveling sewing machine. Please clarify the cut size of the batting for the pocket. The video states 12x6” but the length of the pocket is 21”. I appreciate your sewing style, organization and neatness while sewing and the finished project.
You are correct. That is a misprint. I have another underthetable mat that uses the 12 inch. So sorry about the confusion and thank you for bringing that to my attention. Yes, batting for the fabric needs to be 21 x 6.
I plan to add flaps to cover my pocket areas with velcro since I have little ones who love to grab anything lol 😅thanks for this tutorial I definitely needed an organizer
I do so enjoy watching the tutorials you make. Precise information... Excellent instruction and awesome projects. Appreciate the tips along the way . Definitely on my to do list... Several to make and some to give as gifts!
So Glad to see this! Your videos are the best and I’ve been wanting to make a few of these? I also want to make one for all my acrylic rulers! Thanks! Vicky from TEXAS.
Great instructions. It really helped me with making a perfect bias binding as I’m not a quilter. I’m making this as soon as I can get to the fabric store.
Hi, i have that very chair you're sitting on & scoots around the room & takes me to places i don't even want to go, is quite hazardous especially when it does'nt have side arms to hang on to, so I've had to deploy it into another room for the time being or at least until I'm fully recovered from my hip surgery! Love your channel. Jen in the UK. X

I love this mat…I think it will be great asset to my sewing area! Thank you fi4 sharing this! I need to get some fun material to make some bias tape! 😊
I like the idea of the mat, however I would be wary of storing anything sharp against my lap. May adapt the idea to make one large pocket to collect scrap thread. I have a shelf above my sewing machine so I have attached magnetic tool holders under the shelf, and use this to store my sharp tools like scissors and awls. Magnets hold better on a horizontal surface rather than on a vertical wall.
Looks very pretty, I rather have a sewing station on the table, it would bother me to have the equipment hanging off the table, need the free leg space. But that's a personal preference. I really liked the bias tape video!
If you are binding straight edges like quilts or this mat you can use regular binding strip that are NOT on the bias. I just happen to have these bias tape (cut and made on the bias) so I didn't use regular binding. Thanks for your kind words.
It is safe if used in a ventilated area, outside is perfect or beside an open window. You can also spray inside a 'tent' ie paper bag which can be closed and disposed of.
I search thru for the other Matt you’ve mentioned at the end of this video, but couldn’t locate it. Searched thru your videos, and searched sewing mat, but haven’t located it. Is there a number or exact name to search? Your instructions are very helpful and clear.

I hear you! It would be nice to make, and have, but dangling anything is enticing to kitties, even if they are 12yo!!

What a wonderful idea...and, a great tutorial! Thank you, Jan. I will make two, one for under my regular machine and one for my serger.
I have two as well. Have you seen the under the table caddy tutorial? ruclips.net/video/d7teGk8chB0/видео.htmlsi=ZVCzvuoUMu9xQybJ
I made one for my sewing machine, serger, and even my leatherworking desk.
awesome!
Great tutorial. Thank you. I’m frugal with my pretty fabrics. I think I would use a plain muslin on the backs of mat and pocket. 🪡
Yes, that is what I'll do on the next ones I make.
An old sheet would be a cost saver too.
Love this idea for my traveling sewing machine!

Would it stop moving if you put a square of anti-slip underneath. Useful for the machine pedal also 😊
The mat sounds like a great idea. I may consider myself as the chari does glide around a little too easily.

Well said!
The fabric clips should go flat side (clear) down. They glide easier that way.
I find if clipping on a flat surface, putting the rounded corner down works best for me. I guess we all find what works best for our hands. :)
Thanks soooo much♡♡♡

I want a sewing mat for my serger. Like your other sewing mat that works with your sewing cabinet. Thanks for sharing😊
I have two. One mat and the "under table" version which I'll be uploading soon. You are so welcome!
Love this!!!!!
Thank you!
If you have a ruler long enough, can you start in the middle of the mat and make that your first quilted line?
Beautiful mat and fabulous instructions. When you say “bias tape” do you mean “binding” like for a quilt? I love your binding finish method!
Sort of, bias tape (ingredient) is what you need for binding ( cooking). But yes, bias tape is what quilters call binding.
I was wondering the same thing. Was the binding fabric cut on the bias or cut straight with the grain? Seems trivial but bias tape is very math-y 😂
@@monavance2125 Yes this is Bias Binding or Bias Tape all cut on the bias.
If you are binding straight edges like quilts or this mat you can use regular binding strip that are NOT on the bias. I just happen to have these bias tape (cut and made on the bias) so I didn't use regular binding.
Thanks for your kind words.
I’ll just say great instructions and do you have instructions for a pocket that could be used on a recliner? Not able to move around good 🌹❤️
I have designed a pattern for one but have not yet done the tutorial for it. Stay tuned.
Thanks so much for this! I’m definitely going to make it…I have never used the spray glue as I’m concerned for my lungs, is it safe?
