DuAxel: A NASA Prototype Rover to Explore the Toughest Terrain

- A flexible rover that has both ability to travel long distances and rappel down hard-to-reach areas of scientific interest has undergone a field test in the Mojave Desert in California to showcase its versatility. Composed of two Axel robots, DuAxel is designed to explore crater walls, pits, scarps, vents and other extreme terrain on the moon, Mars and beyond.
This technology demonstration developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California showcases the robot’s ability to split in two and send one of its halves -- a two-wheeled Axle robot -- over an otherwise inaccessible slope, using a tether as support and to supply power.
The rappelling Axel can then autonomously seek out areas to study, safely overcome slopes and rocky obstacles, and then return to dock with its other half before driving to another destination. Although the rover doesn’t yet have a mission, key technologies are being developed that might, one day, help us explore the rocky planets and moons throughout the solar system.

I was impressed by the design of the wheels. They are great for traversing very rough terrain!
seeing it detach itself in order to explore tough terrain is really cool. You guys are doing great work and I hope to see this thing actually go to mars!

The two wheeler reminds me of those toys we used to make out of a wooden cotton reel, elastic band, pencil and a slice of a candle.

Or flat cardboard wheels with pencils in between wheels. My dad actually made miniature crafts from scratch, even made the tools to create n fix his prototypes. He made those air hovers before the one with cameras came out.
What if the thread get stuck on a rock or lets say coze of the tire movement a rock moved over the cable...then front got stuck and can the back alone function?
I loved the way it was able to retract. I was concerned that, if the cable was caught between rocks, it would not be able to reel itself back in. The ability to pull the arm up and away with the wheels bracing and turning was beautiful. Nice job team.
It should take a ramp to mars, for gnarly jump tricks.

Good looking rover just feel the tether will snag on the rocks. A shame the 2nd half doesn't do anything while un tether . Would tank tracks not work?
This kind of rover is very much needed I think maybe guys you should do done cooperation with the boston dynamics on walking robots improvement especially for more exploration and terrain.

In reverse, the stingy thing basically acts like an anchor. It can only be lifted when climbing steep terrain by turning the wheels forward and gravity tipping the whole thing backwards. But I can't come up with a better idea. The modular design tackles the challenge of exploring steep terrain in an impressive way. Engineering of the tether might be a challenge.

That might make the whole rover useless.

@@TheThinggummybob I suppose so but it's sort of an inherent problem of having a tether. If they had a solution I would have expected them to show it. So I doubt they have one.
It’s a prototype, so maybe that’s one of the problems they’ll look for an answer to before making the one that will actually travel to Mars.

Of course it's a prototype but that just seems like an inherent risk of using a long tether on rough terrain. I doubt you can engineer that away.

Impressed of the extended distance of functionality and the resembling! Not at all of the wheels design.

A few concerns with the tether design which will need addressing if they have not been already:
The tether (depending on its material) will be at risk of wearing as it rubs along rocks and the Martian surface. It will need to be incredibly durable.
Second, it will also become increasingly dirty and it will be at risk of pulling sand and other small particulates into the tether retraction system.
Other than that, cool concept!

Hmmm. I’m not so confident in the anchor mechanism. Too many moving parts imo. I’m no NASA engineer however. This rover is neat nonetheless.
The currrent rovers have so many moving parts it's ridiculous. There's no getting away from that, since you want to cram as much useful stuff in there as possible.
@@logitech4873 You’re right about that. I was referring to the actually hook mechanism with the cable (or line or whatever) attached to it. It just seems failure prone to me. Who knows though. Just the fact that anything mechanical/electronic could survive in that extreme Martian atmosphere while being controlled from such a great distance blows my mind.
