Congratulations Christchurch bringing back the trams to the city , Auckland could learn how it should be done, well done and look forward to any extended line in future
As a local, I'm sad to say that we're not really "bringing them back". Back in the 50s we had trams that went as far as the outer suburbs and served as a practical form of public transport. However, they receded, and now all that remains is what you see, preserved for historical purposes and as a tourist attraction.
@@lochlanhanham8308yeah but they do keep them well maintained and with new transport ideas appearing as the city transport plan expand the possibility of trams returning could happen
I remember riding the tram only a few years after the CBD reopened. I'm so happy to see the expanded circuit, all the rebuilt spaces, especially those for active transportation. Hope the tram keeps expanding!!
Love the tram tour! Hopefully in the future though they upgrade it so there can be two lines. I feel as thought it’s a bit strange to have the teams go though one loop, up the same track, and then through another loop
I think the tram only goes round in one direction(like the former Sydney Monorail did) and the passing tracks are there in case the tram behind catches up to the one in front.
We took this tram in 2016. Looks so familiar but, pleasingly, different. Nice to see the Christchurch Phoenix rising. Lovely city but you’ve got to keep the ‘Cardboard Cathedral’! The tram drivers are very knowledgeable and proud of their city btw.
Watching this after hearing about the line on an Aunty Donna podcast. I like it. Was not expecting Gandalf to still be about, but I shouldn't be surprised.
Great to see. We visited Christchurch three times before the earthquake and once about a month after. Pleased to see new life evolving. We felt the 180 chairs was more moving than the riverside memorial. Over from England.
A great tour of Christchurch with its ancient buildings. Hopefully most of the buildings damaged in the earthquake can successfully be repaired. At stop no. 17 that lady sitting at the restaurant table just changed her seat so that she could get a photo of herself with the tram. One does tend to associate one's self with the tour and history even if they hadn't paid for the tour. 😅😅😅
An interesting tour as there were parts of the city I no longer recognise from before the earthquake. Pity so many of the replacement building are characterless and out of scale with the old city.
Eh, the old city was a lot uglier than people realise. Obviously some very pretty buildings existed and fell but most were brutalist. I think the new buildings in general look better than the old ones in general. Also not having bricks falling onto people is a huge bonus.
This is a great tour of a beautiful city. I am interested to know the class of tram used in this video and if it was a ex Sydney tram. I was in Christchurch in October 2019 and I am sure I saw a W class ex Melbourne tram on this tour. Thanks again for this great video.
The ex Sydney tram is R class 1808. You would have seen Melbourne W2 class 244 operating on the city tour, and another W2, 411, operates the Tramway Restaurant service.
@@micklatham8494 Thanks for this information it is exactly what I was wanting. I hope to return to Christchurch and will definitely take this tour. New Zealand is a beautiful country and so are its people. Have a Happy Easter and stay safe and healthy.
Last time I was in ChCh, I was only 11 and the tram line was little more than the section of track that ran from the museum to the square. The city is completely different now
Not gonna lie. 1st time heard of New Zealand seen pics and video thought country was located in Northern Europe near Denmark 🇩🇰 cause so much different to Australia.
@@railfanworld It was when you filmed it, but the tracks beyond Lichfield Street have since been completed and it now goes around, down through Poplar Lane to Tuam Street and back up High Street.
Трамвай едет прямо в метре от кафе и магазинов, как-то это не очень безопасно. Видно что линию давным-давно прокладывали. Повезло, что не демонтировали за все эти годы.
Great job, Railfan. Wondering whether you might consider making your speedo and 'what stop are we up to now' graphics just a bit more prominent; I can still see little bits of the city between them.
Its weird that it goes inside the mall/shopping centre. Nice that Christchurch has this but sad thing is that its only a tourist tram. The whole idea these days is that you dont need a car if you have public transport but I guess many people "drive with their cars" that they can try this loop. And price is extremely expensive 30NZD (thats €18/$20 USD). For example New Orleans(Louisiana, US) has old wooden trams also but they are in everyday use and the price is $1,25 per ride.
Such a waste of infrastructure, this line should be taken over, extended and coverted to running modern trams as part of the cities public transport network.
