- I have reformatted this tutorial, joining the two parts to make one video.
The Checkerboard is one of the most basic and useful of canes. It can also turn into an Ikat!

I love that you have these simple basic cane tutorials. When I started with clay I did not learn how to make these. I just followed tutorials not really knowing what the basics were. Thanks Donna.
Glad you like them, Sheryl! Hugs, D❤️
Using your book as reference after twelve years is indicative of your teaching. Ah, but what a delight to hear you and watch your hands! Thank you for sharing yourself!

Donna this is fabulous! Thanks for sharing it! I have been absolutely addicted to different bargello patterns lately and can see a completely different and cool bargello using this cane as well. I wanna stay up and try it now lol! Thank you again for this!!

Grazie Donna Kato 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you!
This is a fun one! Perspective makes a difference!
This is beautiful!❤ This textile is from my part of the world and would be pronounced as ikkat. Anyway that was wonderful
Aha, I did not know that, thank you. So, it’s a short “i”, not a long e sound? We pretty regularly demolish pronunciations! 😊❤️
awesome patterns
This is cool looking. Tfs hugs
Wonderful 💜
Love it 😍 thank you 🌷🙏
Love this.
Thank you for sharing. What is the name of the Grey ruler you measured the thickness with?
Oh, that’s my Marxit. We don’t make it, anymore. The Chinese do…I don’t have a resource…sorry…hugs, D
❤️
Is there a way to do something like this but have the cane be rounded instead of square? I'm trying to achieve something similar but its for a mushroom cap so it would have to be round
Okay, so you want the ikat to radiate from a center, right? The way I would do that would be to make the cane square then force it into a triangle. I'd concentrate on the point and sort of let the squared off other end stay the way it is (or it will become distorted). Divide the cane and reassemble the points, you should get a pattern with the ikat radiating from the center an it'll be complete - not perfectly round. You can cut it perfectly round, though. Hope this helps! D
Hello. Great video. I tried looking at your websites for the roller marker you used but couldn’t find it. Could you share where you got it from??
That’s a sad story. We stopped making them because we got ripped off (China). I don’t know where you might find it now. 🙁❤️
@@DonnaKatoArt oh no! That is a sad story! :(
That is a link to Etsy. They have the ruler you are looking for. Good Luck. Beautiful work Ms. Donna as usual 🥰
@@sarahjane3897where would the link be?
Where do I find the marks it tool you used? Thank you
hi Elizabeth, well, we used ot make it, got ripped off in China but I'm not to angry because when I saw it, it was cheaper than it would have cost for us to make it here. Run on sentence. I'm actually thinking of getting a bunch and selling them myself! I will try to find the seller! Hugs, D
