L86 (6.2L) Intake Manifold Swap on L83 (5.3L)
People used to do this on the older gen’s. Never understood it. It’ll flow over 500 wheel as is. Slap a eBay turbo on there and a mild turbo cam. Btw insane all the bullshit we need in order to cam these newer trucks. Who in their right mind would give Whipple 6k to the supercharger comments. Either way appreciate the videos bud not many people are doing things with the LT’s and I just picked one up. Solid content
Thanks for the video, planning on doing this myself this weekend.
Have you considered putting in the corvette 95mm throttle body? Curious what kind of bump that will add in throttle response as opposed to the 87mm.
Sure I'll be happy going from 80mm to 95mm!
He would have to port the I take throttle inlet the intake is what does most of the magic if you have 95mm funneling it back down to 88mm in the intake inlet won't make much of a difference
did you reuse the same rubber coupler between the air tube and throttle body or did you have to get a bigger one for the increase in size of the throttle body?
I had to get a bigger connector. Luckily, AFe includes the bigger connector with their CAIs. So, no added expense.
@ Shaneman20, thanks for making this vid. Just ordered a Katech ported throttle body.
Did it add more sound and noise when accelerating?
Good information
Thanks
Great video . Wish we could have seen more of how carboned up the valves were . also what exactly do you do in the automotive Feild ? Are you a mechanic or work in parts ?
There might be another chance later on. Everything except cylinder 7 and 8 were really bad. 7 and 8 weren't that bad, but still had harsh buildup. I was on a time crunch. So, I'll see what I can do next time.
Neither. I like to think I help make dreams. ;)
Hi shaneman, 1 week left till I get my custom 95mm L86 ported manifold from Gawtney. I also bought 95mm ported TB and a custom 4 inch 90° tube from Spectre Performance. I've been searching all over internet and suprised could not find one step by step instruction video on the removal of L83 manifold for the swap. All are finished product.. Is there any chance you could do a quick video by listing out all the steps on removal of the stock manifold, sensors to be taken out, and tools you used? That would really help my installation a lot! Thank you.
I haven't had much time to do videos as of late. However, 10mm sockets extensions, and a ratchet will be your friend in removing the bolts. You may need a pick to remove stubborn electrical connectors, but be careful using it as it can damage the connector and sensor. I would also recommend pry tools like trim removal tools to remove any clips that are pushed into the manifold. Especially the rear clips on the back of the manifold. You will thank me later.
Hey Shane man , I'm about to do the swap as well I was wondering will my l83 intake tube fit on the l86 if not did you use have to use a coupling reducer ?
You will need a coupling reducer. I already had one that came with my cold air intake setup.
I'm getting a 95mm tb with a ported l86 manifold openlet to match. So I bought a 4inch tube from spectre performance for a direct bolt on. No reducer and no bottle neck.
Did the check engine came on when u swapp it??
It shouldn’t Unless you don’t tighten the intake manifold bolts in the correct order and have a slight vacuum leak. The swap is 1 for 1.
Any update? I got code P0113 and P16a1
Love the vices, the channel and your delivery. But PLEASE balance the music with your speech. From one RUclipsr to another ;)
It's a constant struggle in the editor, but I am trying to do better since I can't get a smooth transition. With time comes a new editor.
You do know the LT1 intake fits on the trucks too right? Just need a 45 degree couplter for the TB since those angle the TB downward
the truck 6.2 is a LT1 with a taller intake a different cam and tuning
Well which one is it? Is it a tad bit or much more responsive. You said both lol.
I would like to know as well.
Planning on doing this myself, did you consider swapping the fuel rails aswell why you had it all open? Just wondering if it'll create a greater performance gain or just problems. Reason I ask is I got the manifold and upgraded rails meant for the 6.2 just curious if it will create problems on the 5.3
I'd tackle one project at a time. Since these engines are direct injected and not port injected like the LS engines, removing the fuel system on and in the engine can either be a breeze or a nightmare.
After change how much has added from the horse? The truth is a beautiful idea
Well, it's nothing significant. Preliminary mod for when I go to the next stage.
Hey Shane. After the install I was wondering if you experienced a lot of bog when accelerating. If so how did you fix it ?
Tune
The part that goes from the tb to the Kai do I need a bigger one to fit that new tb??
If your CAI didn't come with one in a kit, yes.
@@shaneman20 do you if there any way that I can just order that peace??
I just swapped mine and it’s idling not normal keeps rev up and down
Vacuum leak
Thats what pumping 87 octane gets you
Is there any recalibration on the new throttle body when u installed it ? Or reprogramming
I would recommend a tune. Initially, it'll be fine, but I would still highly recommend a tune.
I see you got the unported stock manifold. Would you recommend to the ported one or theere's not much of difference?
I would recommend it if I was going for a stock manifold N/A high power setup or even power adder setup. At the time, I felt the cost:gains ratio didn't make sense. So, I went with an L86 stock manifold. Perfectly fine for my application
@@shaneman20 Thanks Shane. My current 5.3L setup is K&N 77, Kooks Long Tube Headers, Highflow cat, Gibson dual split catback and a diablo tune. Im doing a ported LT5 95mm TB with an adapter. I do see the Ported costs $500, and trying to figure it out if a stock L86 manifold would do same.
What tools did you use to get the bolts on the back? And how did you get the intake cover off? I'm having a hard time with my install.
If I remember correctly, I was able to reach all with small tools. There is a wire harness on the back of the cover that you'll need to pull off in order to get the cover completely out.
Thanks for the help! I did what you did and took the intake out first then cut the clips off because i wasn't putting the cover back on. Also check out black bear performance for that custom tune you want to get. Won't be disappointed.
Can you remove the manifold cover without removing the manifold itself?
@@andrewruiz8914 yes
How much hp u say it's good for
Why did you end up replacing it? Did your break?
Bigger throttle body opening.
Hey bro I got a 2017 5.3 with long tubes no cats, 93 octane tune, 4.88 gears and intake. Would doing this l86 swap be worth the hassle or you think just investing in a whipple down the road be better??? Thanks bud
It's all in what you're looking to do with the truck. I only chose to do it for what I was planning later on down the line. It has almost little to no effect on N/A setups.
@shaneman20 is the throttle body worth it? Looking at getting one just wanna know if it’s worth it. Not looking for it to add 50 horse, but to get rid of some of that lag would be nice. 2014 6.2. Intake, tuned and exhaust for now.
Probably not. If you're N/A, I wouldn't bother. If you're going forced induction, then I'd say look into it.
Shaneman20 damn, I already pulled the trigger lol. Now I’m thinking about sending it back. I am going supercharged, just have to wait in it til next summer due to buying a house.
Honestly, hang on to it. You might find a use for it if you decide you want a bigger supercharger.
Shaneman20 I’ll probably just toss it on then since it’s already gonna Be sitting. Guess we’ll see! Can’t get much worse, we tried tuning the pedal response and he couldn’t get the initial to do anything til it hit 14% throttle. After its moving it’s fine, just that initial lag. If I can get rid of that that’d be worth the 300 bucks. Ya know?
My Blackbear tune is so sensitive at 30 mph I'm either not touching the pedal or I'm accelerating. And if I'm in first gear accelerating lightly and decide to wrap the throttle it immediately jumps. Might try tuning first instead of replacing hard parts
after driving for a bit now ...any issues , do you notice any difference in power or mileage ?
Ryan Austin Mild difference in throttle response and much more throatier. No issues so far.
Is the set up worth it? I’m looking into get mine done.
I would say that if you're looking at going supercharged (centrifugal) or turbo, then honestly, no.
Oh alright cool thanks
You look disappointed. Just buy a supercharger if you want more power.
I wasn't expecting a huge power gain, but this mod will be key for whatever I plan next.
Shaneman20 what are you planning next?
@Shaneman20 is it normal my truck sounds choppy and if so do i need a re tune?
Mine sounds different too like almost as if I has a cam. Also I have a lot more clicking noise like a diesel idk if I like it. Also in park if I throw my rpms up they catch around 1.5 hang around a sec and then drop to normal idle. I’m going to get a tune soon but we’ll see. Did you have any similar symptoms?
Dose the intake manifold in the link fits a 2016 silverado?
Yes.
Do you have the link where you buy this parts?
I'll post the links in the description box, if that helps.
Does it make that difference?
Maybe if you're watching a dyno. It's small gains.
You think it’ll work on my 19’ 5.3?
I can’t find it again but I just saw a thread on one of the forums last night that said it works just fine on the 2019+ 5.3
Do you need a tune after this?
If you’re going from a l83 to l86 throttle body and mainfold you will. Mine would barely stay on got it tuned and whole different truck
Would that intake fit on 2008 5.3 intake?
No.
Will that intake manifold work on a 2018 5.3?
Yes.
Been watching the channel..enjoy it and new sub to you
How much hp did the throttle body give you??
Very little. Katech says it can add 1-3hp.
Did you feel any difference performance wise than the stock throttle body? And is faster in responding when flooring it?
@@bo-jassim7419 A little. It's not like the 07-13 Silverados, but it does feel better. Especially after a tune.
I have a 2016 bolt ons silverado do you recommend it or do i need more mods?
@@bo-jassim7419 The only reason I got it was for the next stage of mods. It was merely a supporting mod.
What’s up bro I’m about to do this swap on my l83. Do you know what’s the torque sequence and the torque spec?
For the torque specs, Pace Performance offers a sheet for the LT engines. For the torque sequence, I used the sheet that MSD provides for the their Atomic intake for the LT1. Same sequence as the L83/L86. I'll leave the links in my description.
I checked the part numbers on GMPartsDirect and I’m sorry to say L83 and L86 Manifolds are the exact same. They only change the Throttle Body. L83s and L86s also share the same Heads and Exhaust Manifolds. The Cams are different tho, but you don’t have to worry about that now lol
Exactly. Just allows you to run the bigger throttle body is all.
L86 has same cam as LT1. I think only difference between L86 and LT1 is the inlet and the tune.
I have a 2016 sierra 5.3 ecotec 3 I wanted to do this kind of set up (intake manifold and a new throttle body for more airflow. You think this would work with mine if i got a custom tune right after I installed??
I.e. even though the intake manifold is meant for a 6.2 would it still line up correctly??
@@SargeWedge Yes, and yes.
@@shaneman20 thanks mate!
Damn man. Arent your running a catch can too!!!
603Machines Yep. Cut the lines shorter to fit the new intake.
I would much rather recommend a Moroso Evac System. Moroso 25900 is the part number on eBay
Your Impreza is burning oil
Don't they all?
Good information
Thanks
