I think one of the things that makes Matthew Broderick interesting as Professor Harold Hill is the fact that he's so fresh-faced and innocent-looking...it would be a little hard to imagine that a face like that could possibly belong to a con artist, but that's probably what makes him so good at it.
I suppose thats one way of looking at it. Of course, in Hollywood, it doesn't really matter if he's good at it or not. Appearances are everything, and he doesn't look the part.
Even more so Matthew Broderick doesn’t have the personality of a grifter. Whether the conman is selling stocks, time shares, or band uniforms, he has to have immense confidence and charm for the con to work. That’s why Robert Preston is so good in the role. Broderick is too gentle and nice and lacking in dazzle to con anyone, thus defeating the premise of his character.
I actually like the way Mathew performs this song, probably because it's more his style. Preston does it like a showman, which Mathew isn't, so he stays cool while he keeps popping up, like "I can keep this up all day, baby!" It's one moment where he succeeds in bringing a little bit of Ferris into the character.
You're absolutely right. Matt Brod is an awesome actor, and I hate people blaming him just cause originals are better than remakes. He was amazing in this song, it's just his eyes in this scene that are 'distracting'.
I feel like his facial expressions need a little bit more charm. He just seems blank which doesn't seem to match the tone of the song/scene in my opinion.
I love the dynamic between these two characters, they're actually really perfect for each other! Professor Hill is a very smart man, you have to be to be a con man. And Marian wants someone who is somewhat intellectual, someone she can discuss literature with. Later in the movie, Harold quotes some poetry to her which seems to impress her. He even said so himself, "the sadder, but wiser girl for me." Which, she is.
"You can all talk, talk, talk, talk, bicker, bicker, bicker. You can bicker all you want but, it's different than it was!" That's is the beauty of interpretation, the imagination of artists and the reason the "source" still holds up. Haters gonna hate. Let's not forget, they were directed and that director was satisfied with their performance. No one compares modern Shakespeare plays to the original...YOU CAN'T! You can only give yourself to the experience and take from it what you will.
Gotta give him props...it's no Preston, not by a long shot...but it still works here...a revision...I like it. Good Job, Broderick, you've got me with the way you made this work...
Much as I love the '62 film version, I have to admit this version uses the camera much more creatively, and there are some seriously imaginative tracking shots and quick cuts in this number. If you're making a movie musical, why not do stuff you couldn't do on stage?
It is a valid point, but it needs to be in skilled hands, not just lots of different camera shots for the sake of lots of different camera shots. You risk losing your unity.
@@kenaldri4982 Different camera shots don't ruin unity. What matters is that the camera gives the characters something to do other than just sit or stand where they are, which every number in this version does, and the 62 version, for the most part, doesn't.
It's such a great number, it kinda sells itself. Broderick is a very peculiar Harold Hill, but it's not enough to stop me from loving this. One thing I've gotta give this version of The Music Man credit for, too: their choreography is awesome. Acting isn't very good, but the dancing is great. It'd prob have been cool to see this cast perform the musical live. It's not a great film production is all.
I remember watching the original version, and then this one. I liked them both, but I think I like this one a little better because I know and love the actors in it.
I like how this one has definitely got a movie sense to it. The other one was very theatre-like compared to this one. And although Matthew isn't exactly Preston, he still does a very good job at being Prof. Hill. It would be a very hard role to play, with the acting while acting :P lol So yeah. Although they won't see this, I'd like to say "good job" to the actors and actresses in this movie ^_^
i keep thinking theres no way this could be better than the original. and in a lot of ways it cant. but i think matthew broderick is such a stunning and amazing harold hill. its such a perfect part for him. (I played Zeneeta, but we didn't do this scene :( )
I don't know why but I think Mathew and this scene is better than in the original version. Mathew sings the piece to fit the tone and scenery where as Preston seem to yell sing, which didn't really fit the scenery. I also like how in this version he has a sort of magical quality when match making and getting Marian to fall in love with him. I also love how Marian has this sweet adorkable quality where she tries to be serious with the professor but, being a hopless romantic, can't help but fall for his antics.
I've seen High School "Music Man" Professor Hills that I liked better than Broderick's. Neither his dancing nor singing is really right for the role. This song is a turning point in the entire movie. There was this point in the original version where you can clearly see Marion starting to fall for Prof Hill. That scene and look on Marion's face is indelibly etched in my mind. The two almost kiss. She snaps out of it, but then does loosen up at times after that. It was absolutely wonderful filmmaking, because for the first time, you see Marion as a woman, not just a librarian. Here, Marion the "Trophy Wife" never goes through that transformation at all.
i keep thinking theres no way this could be better than the original. and in a lot of ways it cant. but i think matthew broderick is such a stunning and amazing harold hill.
4:02 Oh gah if someone had done that to me he would have gotten his rear kicked. I love my precious books, I’m a big reader. Friends at school called me “The Walking Library”. Ever heard of someone getting in trouble in English class for reading? That’s me. Lol
I don't understand all the hate towards Matthew. Yes, I have seen the original, and I love it, but I also love this one. I think Kristin and Matthew have amazing chemistry together!
Okay, nobody could top Robert Preston in thes role. But Matthew Broderick brings his own kind of interpretation. Where Preston was the silver-tongued salesman who spoke so fast that no one could figure out his schemes, let alone keep up with him, Broderick has more of this earnest, almost innocent look that makes it hard for anyone to believe he is a swindler-which helps a lot. Barring the creepy smile, I really love this clip. Vive Kristin Chenoweth!
Except that Marion DOES know. From the start. In the original anyway. It's one of the central themes, her *choosing* to ignore what she knows to be fact. She lacks the details of his misanthropy, and she doesn't *want* to know.
@bridget117 "Madam Librarian, what can i do, my dear, to catch your ear? .. what can i say my dear to make it clear I need you badly badly badly madam Librarian!" Is that good enough? lol
oh come on you can totally tell my her facial expressions that she is really enjoying this. i don't understand why people have to be so hard headed when it comes to love. i mean if this happen to me i would so happy and I would be able to tell my kids that something like this happen. she is just trying to fight her feelings for him, i can tell just by her expressions that she is really enjoying this. what women wouldn't like this
On second viewing, I actually really like Matthew Broderick's performance (I realized that the first time, I was expecting him to play Robert Preston), but that "charming" smile he gives Marian at 0:27? Creepy.
If that happened, then the world would be a musical. You know how many men want a woman these days. All the boys starting in second grade have a crush.
He was cute in this movie. He's still cute even though he's much older now, but in his earlier years I thought he was really cute, he has such a baby face
Kristin is so funny in this number!! So much of that awkwardness and the physical comedy. She was so great as Marian.
Romance in a library only happens to certain types
"Well, what do you want to take out?"
"The librarian."

@Alicia en el Pais de las Maravillas Nah, both of them are far too young for the character.
Even more so Matthew Broderick doesn’t have the personality of a grifter. Whether the conman is selling stocks, time shares, or band uniforms, he has to have immense confidence and charm for the con to work. That’s why Robert Preston is so good in the role. So we have Ferris Beuller and Glinda the Good Witch.
Precisely!
As much as I appreciate a few of the aspects of this version, Robert Preston will always be the best Music Man ever.
I actually like the way Mathew performs this song, probably because it's more his style. Preston does it like a showman, which Mathew isn't, so he stays cool while he keeps popping up, like "I can keep this up all day, baby!"

Also, Broderick isn't trying to channel Robert Preston, which is a point in his favor.
U r so right
I watched this in music class for our musical theatre unit
i love matthew broderick! he has such an amazing voice; and kristin is just amazing in every way possible

Darnelle Radford "no it ain't no it ain't but you gotta know the territory"!
DAT BOI COMIN every heard a fellow of the name of hill?
HE DOESNT KNOW THE TERRITORY!
Oh gosh. Professor Hill has the power of teleportation!
Kristin Chenoweth defeintly showed a lot of her physical comedy in this number!
Matthew Broderick plays this character perfectly it is the same that he played as Ferris Bueller and i cant think of a better person to cast
Me too, although I don't know if I'd be able to resist if they flirted this way AND looked like Matthew Broderick
this is my favorite song in the entire musical
Omg this movie brings me to tears every time I watch it. It reminds me of my 8th grade year when I watched it in music class
Gotta give him props...it's no Preston, not by a long shot...but it still works here...a revision...I like it. Good Job, Broderick, you've got me with the way you made this work...
"What do you want to take out?"

Nice one.
I died laughing at that “Cinderella” moment. 🤣
Oh, shut up and enjoy the movie. Goodness gracious *eye roll*

This is my favorite musical number of the whole musical.
wow kristin is so good. i hope she'll be in more movie musicals:)
The Blue lighting gets me every time!
I LOVE this scene! So adorable!
matthew broderick=amazing.
and they together have great chemistry on this song. i would love to be the librarian he is serenading. ;)
This is just pure movie making magic! The dancing and music is just perfect!

Love this musical
Never knew Matthew had such a great voice! Reminds me of Dick Van Dyke.
Fun fact: ruclips.net/video/29XZCBAX0Qs/видео.htmlsi=2s-S0uKlRZvDZGlI
i LOVE the original
but this dude did great on this song!
everyone knows Broderick is a well known Broadway singer
I remember watching the original version, and then this one. I liked them both, but I think I like this one a little better because I know and love the actors in it.
that is so funny when he says the sadder but wiser girl for me and then grins.....LOL
Wow. That was pretty spectacular!
hahahaha i know i laughed so hard!
hahaa omg it makes matthew broderick seem like a bigger geek than he already is. i could not stop laughing!
Thank you! I love this song!

I love how fast he can change places
Though I don't recall spotlights in the original
no you're right. im a huge Matthew fan, and i think so too
I never thought anything could top the old version of Madam Librarian. I was wrong!
She looks so much like Glinda here. :)
So great....I love the bit with the bell at the end...
Thank you so much for uploading this! :)
I love the song in the library!
madame libraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarian
i wish i was that smooth
Sometimes you need to stick to the original movie. That is the best movie ever. I didn't even know there was a remake
Such a slick guy!

I know, your last line is such a great statement!!!
Cheno is a beast, my God!
This is one of favorite songs in the movie!
This is my favorite song and I love Kristin and Matthew Brodreck! AHHHH
dang this is a good scene
i love the bass clarinet in the background.
this version is alot more fun than the original :)
i keep thinking theres no way this could be better than the original. and in a lot of ways it cant. but i think matthew broderick is such a stunning and amazing harold hill.
For the life of me, I can't understand how he appears in one place and then he appears at the opposite side of the room in an instant!
choreography leaves a lot to be desired in this version..
yeah. the original was better
Ya especially when compared to the amazing choreography of the original film
So does Broderick’s performance
Matthew Broderick is such an adorable Harold Hill. :)
Ok seriously, creepiest smile ever Matthew...
All I can hear is Simba whenever I hear him 🚶🏽♀️🚶🏽♀️
IKR!
I love 7:34 when he looks like he is being sucked into the floor and then pops up behind the desk with her XD
In music we had to watch this. Better then sitting there and doing nothing
There are so many worse musicals you could've been forced to watch.
He's magical..! ;)
4:02 Oh gah if someone had done that to me he would have gotten his rear kicked. I love my precious books, I’m a big reader. Friends at school called me “The Walking Library”. Ever heard of someone getting in trouble in English class for reading? That’s me. Lol
Oh my god, same. I would have punched him for ruining the book. Especially if it was one of my favorites.
I love kristens blue dress :)
Like this movie and the cast !nice ☺️👍!
i haven't seen this version or the show in a long time, and now that i've seen this, it is my fave scene!!!!
Oh I want to waltz in a dark library with blue mood lighting.
If all men flirted that way, the world would have too many warp spots to stitch together.
Didn't you see that guy? He was everywhere! o.o;;

Love in the library
Oooh the Ferris Bueller smile...
Kristin Chenoweth showed a lot of her Physical comedy in this song!
i've never seen cheno dance before that wasnt real goofy and involving a green witch next to her ^_^
I wish all men flirted this way. :)
Bridget Rea I try, without singing...
This is my favorite scene in the movie!
Matthew Brocerick. Modern day Ninja:)
dancing in a library... thats classy(:
I love this song. : D

Definitly my favourite song in the movie ^_^
my fav song in the musical love it
Her expression at 6.11 was so funny! Like, "What? You're my white knight?"
Even with as much as I love Cheno, the 1962 version is SO much better!
Names in fiction are very rarely coincidental. The author comes up with just the right name for the character of the character.
This is my favorite scene.
Ya
If that happened, then the world would be a musical. You know how many men want a woman these days. All the boys starting in second grade have a crush.
This movie is a prime example of why movie companies should not attempt remakes.
i didn't know that she plays the witch in wicked! thatz cool!!
matthew is the book cupid...:P
