  • I'm explaining how fire alarm systems work for new technicians or other employees who deal with these systems. This is my 19th video in a string of many Khan Academy-styled lessons. This video is a continuation of video 18. It shows how dry sprinkler systems are monitored by conventional fire alarm panels.

All of your videos in this series are amazing. I'm just getting into fire alarm systems, and this has been very helpful to help me figure out how they work, and I learned a few extra things I didn't know before too. Thank you for sharing your expertise.

Excellent explaining the system of dry sprinkler . extremely rare I al working ay South Florida never freezing , and will connect to a addressable Fire Panel . The Fire Sprinkler told me because is a dry sysytem doesnt need , tamper or any connection to the Fire Alarm Panel. Now I will be back on them and request to show me the air presure switch and water preassure switch . and supervisory tamper switch is . And I will make sure it will be monitored by the New Fire Alarm System I am Installing. Thank-You and best wishes In God will .

Hi. My name is Mike. Your videos are very good, especially for a technicians perspective. I work as a firefighter, and I've been trying to find something like this to learn how to deal with and understand the perspective of a firefighter showing up with the alarm going off, and being able to understand what is on the screen of the panel. There just isn't much out there dealing with that perspective. Is something like that possible?

Valves can be wired either to open or to short. If the FACP has 3 conditions (alarm, trouble, & supervisory), the valves should be wired to short out the circuit. The circuit should be programmed as a supervisory circuit. All 3 signals should report to monitoring (alarm, trouble, & supervisory). If the panel is not supervisory capable, the valves should be wired to open and thus cause a trouble. Again, those troubles would report to monitoring.

Great videos! Im just wondering if the reason to wire the switch so that it shorts, is to differentiate an open wire vs the actual valve being tampered with?. And if so how that would appear on the panel. I am also wondering how the supervisory and the troubles are different. Supervisory will go to a monitoring company? I would think all troubles should notify a monitoring company in case building is closed with no occupants but the person tampering? Thanks I realize that is a lot of questions.

So valve tamper always needs its own zone? Can't be wired into other zones right?

we found that there solenoid valves in a dry sprinkler system. what is it's function?

The solenoid valve is installed in the preaction system and not in the dry system.
