Your explanation and visuals shed even more light on what the sprinkler repair tech just tried to explain to me when our system at work tripped. Very helpful video, thanks!

if the compressor fails and the air pressure drops below the minimum pressure needed, the water flow triggers an alarm. the pipes are now filled with water. should there still be a trouble on the system ?

have a question I have plumbing work to do which requires me moving the air compressor about 4' shutting down the water to the fire sprink system is not the issue. what happens and what are the procedures for when i am ready to turn the air compressor back on after i have moved the air line, and reset the compressor to the floor.? thanks.

In theory, nothing should really happen. As long as the valve is closed on the water side, and nothing happens on the dry side of the valve, the system should maintain its pressure without the compressor for a little while. When you reconnect the compressor, it may run for a short bit, but it shouldn't really do anything more than that.

If you're in Georgia, you may not have a dry system. Most sprinkler systems have water in them at all times. Only in areas where freezing is a concern would they switch to a dry system. I don't know what's common in your area, so I can't speak to that. But if you had water in a pipe and the temperature dropped below freezing, you should expect the worst.

so if a sprinkler head bursts is that it? Does it then need replacing afterwards?

Yes, however some heads have replaceable glass tubes.
