When to give up on an outboard motor
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 14 окт 2024
- This video is about when to give up on an old outboard and just replace it. Eventually an outboard will just be too far gone and fixing it is no longer a good option. In this step of the Green Machine restoration project I remove the old motor from the hull in order to get ready for the new one arriving. Removing an outboard from a boat involves removing the wiring loom, the control cables, the steering cable and the four bolts that secure it to the transom. I then use a standard engine crane to lift it off the back of the boat and put it onto a wooden outboard stand.

Watched few of your videos and I must say that I like that you are thorough and reasonable about your marine repair.
When I did a rebuild, I had a feeling it was 1 piston bearing failure. Took it all apart and checked on part availability before I started. Ended up being much cheaper to rebuild the entire outboard than buy a used one or new one. Luckily no damage that couldnt be mended, 2/4 pistons needed to be replaced but other than that good to go. All new seals, gaskets, and some serious cleaning.
great vids mate, your vids have vastly improved my knowledge on boat engines. Ive even been able to work on my outboard confidently. Cheers
Thanks Luke, glad the videos helped you. :)
You have no idea how many people I’ve had that wanted to repair a “dodgy” outboard. When they insist, and get handed a repair bill for more than what the outboard is worth, they get upset. I’m certain you see more of it dealing with salties than I do dealing with freshies, but I digress. Greetings from Ohio, USA. One day I’d love to come to your country to pay a visit.
Yeah, old outboards are definitely DIY only if you hope to keep them running. The bill will exceed the value of the outboard very fast if you pay a pro to work on it.
I just had a customer ask after a full rebuild on a 1979 Merc V200 what his motor is worth....about half of what your bill is going to be!
Steve, I’ve got one in my shop presently (1978 Merc 25) that’s had the snot beat out of it, has electrical issues, and a gearcase leak. When I asked what his budget was, he replied “between $800-$1000.” 😳 It’s your money pal!
@@ripperace I think he’s over budget with the needed repairs! Craigslist?
Those of us in the auto repair industry will say to "jack the radiator cap up, and roll a new car under it" when a car has all the good wrung out of it.
As always, very informative. Thanks for posting another of many excellent videos.
I like that saying. :)
Discovered your channel recently. I really enjoy it. I just repowered my 2000 Lowe 1648 that had an original 1999 Mercury 30 hp with a new 2020
Tohatsu MFS 25 horsepower 4-stroke. I couldn't be happier!
That outboard was holding on for dear life even after you pulled the bolts. It just didn't want to retire!
A testament to the strength of Sikaflex.
One of the best introductions on youtube. Great images , good sound, and brief.. very good,,
Wow, thanks!
I've had great success with Evinrude motors all second or third hand, I've never spent more than a $1000 on one. I use them for a season tune them up and get rid of them to finance the next project. My favorite are 80's- 90's 40-45 hp Evinrude/Johnson our boating season is short so they tend to last longer than most places. I had a 69 Evinrude 18hp that I bought for $120 and turned it into $500 with a half hour of wrenching. Looking forward to your restoration vids of the boat.
There is no doubt you can get great second hand motors, that's for sure. It is a good point about having a short boating season. All the second hand motors around here have been used 365 days a year in salt water, so by the time they are 20 years old they've done a lot of work.
I've been wanting to buy me a boat and totally refurbishe it. but was concerned about the motor work part of it. I must say you've made that no longer a concern. thanks for all the great videos you've posted and look forward to your future videos. I WILL BE BUYING MY DANGAR T-shirt
Thanks Quentin, sounds like you've got a great project ahead of you and I really hope the vids can help you with it. Good luck and safe boating. Send me a photo!
That's the spirit Stu, only one way to get over an old girl is to get a new one!
“Gently tap on the end” as he reaches back for three full swings.. hahahaha.. looks like you couldn’t wait to beat the hell out of that thing💪🤣
It deserved it. ;)
Dangar i like your videos and your honesty. i have a 1978 85 hp Johnson since new and its been on several boats. i rebuilt it 5 years ago the power head that is and taught myself to do it. i have spent 4 grand on this motor. i paid the dealer to completely restore the lower unit and electrical systems. he was reluctant to do the work and as you said he advised buying new. i explained to him that if it were a 1965 corvette would he refurbish it and he said of course. So i said well this is my corvette and i want it restored. He insisted on payment up front which i just reached in my pocket and handed him 3 Grand for his work. i have a lot of sentimental value in this motor. and it has been running for 4 years now better than new. The mechanic is always asking me about the motor as he said he never finds people like me who will spend money on old motors. he was also thankful for the job as he was able to train his two young techs on my motor so they could get the experience. thanks again for the great videos!
Really have enjoyed all of your videos. Just learning how to fix my 3 outboards and your videos have helped! Thanks!
Thanks Greg, glad the videos have been helping you with your outboards.
Learned a lot and got all three of them working! Thanks again for sharing!
I have been watching othe videos because I had to fix my wife car but love all your videos. And how many times have you jbwelded that bottom
lot of guys talk about their engine 'bogging down and sputtering under full power, find out it is not fuel related so could be what? kill switch loose connection? heat sensor? or power pack, how come a good mechanic couldnt figure it out... thank you for time on these videos for us all
Some problems can definitely be tricky to track down. Can be a little cut in the fuel line that starts to suck air at high RPM, can be a coil that can't provide spark at high rate. There are just so many possibilities that ruling them out one by one is the only way sometimes.
Dangar Marine Great videos lots of mechanical and electrixal informative as you said bog at full throttel open is really tricky I myself was and still working on an inboard two stroke V6 M2 mercury 210 engine which works great till 4300 rpm then it starts bogging without increasing rpm tried lots of things it improved a bit but still is an issue
rebirthing of the green machine...I love it
Thanks mate, can't wait to get her back out on the water! :)
Sorry for your loss
Thanks Bruce, that means a lot to me. ;)
I would of named that engine on the green machine Frankenstein Stu.It certainly has had some butchering. It must be nice to have Paul lend a hand helping out with a bit of camera work.Good work guys and keep em coming.
LOL, I like the FrankenStu. :) It is great having Paul in the shop when we film, certainly makes things easier and more fun.
*This video title is my life’s question*
"Stick with the devil you know" Truer words have never been said considering boat motors lol
Love the videos. I collect antique outboard. Videos are very helpful. Keep them coming
Thanks Gary, glad you enjoy the vids. :)
Great channel! Honesty and clarity! Brilliant though, after watching for an hour and a half a dude walks by with a stubby..... Great channel! 😁
+Ronan o hEidhin Thanks Ronan, glad to hear you've been enjoying the vids. :)
You're welcome: keep up the good work.
Dang, that's a tear-jerker! I hope I don't ever have to give up on my 1986 Johnson Looper. It's power/weight can't be beat, but parts are increasingly becoming an issue. :-(
Feel the same way about my '81 Johnson. Many years of dependable service. Realistically, many parts are weakened by age and becoming worn, she can't last forever.
All that aluminum dust looks very familiar to me. I have been running a 1989 40hp Johnson for 3 years. This motor was given to me so I have very little money in it and no particular attachment to it. Something under the flywheel is grinding away, that is the source of the dust on my motor. It also has low compression in on of the cylinders and a leaky lower unit. it is time to give up the ghost... I happened across a 2006 40hp Etec for a good price. The best thing about this new motor is that it is basically brand new. It only has 2 hours of run time! The previous owner thought is was too much motor for his boat so he swapped it and the motor has been in the shop for years. It was properly winterized before it was stored. I picked it up for 2500. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be ready to pick up tomorrow!
+mike underbrink Sounds like you've made a very wise choice. I hope the new motor gives you many years of happy boating. :)
As odd as it may seem, I instantly have more respect for anyone that actually owns a cherry picker.. cheers!
I got a Johnson seahorse 5hp TN 28 made in 1953 still starts first pull after I rebuilt the carb . looks good on my 1955 John boat
Nice work, sounds like a great combination. :)
I used to make aluminum support brace for weak starter mounts bolting to other spots. Also low speed screws can be heated to back out..I grew up on salt water motors in NY...needed torch for everything..Not good for a daily commuter motor though...cheers.
Sounds like a good idea. You can't have enough reinforcing with the torque these motors generate.
Another superb video by mr Dangmar as usual..Thanks 😊👍
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed. :)
Nice, hopefully I'd see this video before getting into my adventure with my 1968 evinrude boat/motor combination. Actually it was running very well some times but one problem after another killed this idea. Hull and trailer was good like one on the video. In any case everyone needs a starter boat and all of us learn from mistakes.
For sure, the truth is that with many motors you don't know until you try. Some you can get running fine, some are more trouble than they are worth, but there is always another one around the corner.
Very good video...thanks for the posting.
Great Work!! You got it to last long enough so you could get some use and now you can get a new one!! :)
I did get a few years out of this one and it was free given it had already gone under the water about three times before I got it. ;)
Gently tap on the ends...
BAM BAM BAM BAM
LOL
Yeah-- I loved those 'gentle taps' too... I fell out of my chair...
My 2002 Tohatsu 8 hp is all memories now. Ironically it still ran great even with severe corrosion. The head has to be removed to change the thermostat . Once I started turning bolts, things broke and crumbled. The bottom of the power head was fused to the midsection with a fist sized lump of corrosion and mineral deposits. Parts of the power head were completely gone! Mixed feelings that I tore apart a running motor, but I can't imagine it could have gone much longer
Ah yes, I know that problem all to well. You are right, it probably would have failed sooner rather than later anyway so don't feel too bad about it.
Just a little tap tap tap!!... lol!! Great vid as always!
special edition sailor jerry in the background at start good taste stu. thanks for the info in the other video about block tell tale help me out heaps
Thanks David, co-incidentally having a Sailor Jerry while I go through the comments. ;)
Can't wait to see the new donk Stu...Oh.. and the docking lights
Me neither, on both accounts. :)
Enjoyed the video.
+Alan Waters that's what we're shooting for!
"Just give them a slight tap on the end"...... BAM! BAM!!! BAM!!!!!!! :D I lolled to much from that....
Hey enjoy your shows do you answer outboard trouble shooting question
Sailor Jerry's in the background! Sooooo Goood
I’m at a crossroad right now on my 1990 Johnson GT 175 and it has a serious issue it won’t go over 38 mpg and I believe it’s the reeds engine is fully rebuilt and all new electric s and fresh plugs very well could be the carbs but at this point I’m lost I’m ready to sell it and move on to better things
When you cant get jets out or any screws that are stuck, strip the part to metal then take a fire torch and heat it up then throw it into cold water quick change in temperature changes the size of screws and rest of materials that makes it easier to move off the screw
Yes, you can't beat heat (and particularly heat changes) to free up stuck parts.
Great video again stu!!! Keep em coming mate!!!! You should smash a water jet pump in it! Have a good one mate! Cheers
Thanks Dan! The hull is almost finished now, looking forward to flipping it back over again. :)
Best channel on RUclips! Next motor must be an Evinrude! I am one of those who buy old motors and restores them and sells them. I like the omc 2-strokes machines from 1980-1990, 2 cylinders and 40-60hp. If maintained I guess you can use them for generations! Here in Sweden, we dont have a long season, but sure salty water... wait for the evinrude etec G2, and repower!
Thanks mate! Time will tell. Next week's video will be on the great outboard debate. I'm going to do a survey at the end to let viewers vote. :)
I also have a very old Evinrude motor (1978) that I use in Stockholms waters, but I am thinking that it might be time to get a change the motor as this one didn't want to start this season for some reason, I was otherwise staisfied with it !
It's amazing how long these old outboards do run for. Hopefully it is only something simple that is stopping it from starting.
Yeah, the problem is bad sparks from the spark plugs, I changed the spark plugs and the ignition coils but I still get bad sparks so I am just assuming for that that it will be a waste to pour in more money to fix it and that a change is in order.
Yep, that's certainly the point almost all engines get to in the end.
hi mate love ur vids they have helped a heap over last 6mths with my new/old boat lol just wondering if u have a vid on dual battery setups ???
Not yet, but I do plan to put a second battery and a solar cell in the Green Machine soon so I'll definitely be filming it.
cheers bro
I had that happen when a carter pin some how got in between the teeth and broke the starter mount but tig weld it right up no problems
one thing also is the parts value if u got the time can be worth alot towards a different out board
I like the tribute display
:)
Dangar Mar
Thanks for the great videos, do you ever consider the pollution that some of these old motors produce? I guess that goes hand in hand with fuel efficiency. I love recycling old stuff but like my (really) old truck that I kept fixing, it kind of bothered me that it was a bit of a polluter. I loved that truck and really miss it but the frame was rotted, and it was too old for a complete rebuild. So I traded it in.
I much prefer 4 stroke motors because of the pollution side of things. With regards to replacing the old truck or car, it turns out that the pollution created to make the new truck is much more that the old truck would produce for the rest of your life.
Yes, someone also said that to me, so we come full circle, it makes sense in some cases to fix what you have for environmental reasons. I am in construction, and have demolished several old houses to build new homes, and it was many large truckloads to the dump, really a lot of waste. So in a way, I am guilty! Thanks for the reply and great videos.
Hi Dangar Stu. All of your vids are most helpful and have helped me emensly with my first boat.
Can you please help me. I have a 30hp Yamaha and it will not turn off via the key. Do you have any advise please.
Cheers
Ty
Hi Tyrone. This means that the ignition grounding wire isn't connected somewhere. It could be at the key barrel, a broken wire in the loom going to the motor, or the connector at the outboard end. It is generally white on the Yamahas and yellow and black on the Mercs and Evinrudes (I think!)
Moby Marine will be right onto this one ;)
That would be nice! :)
Love your videos. Thank you for all the great info. What are your thoughts on EFI engines? I'm specifically looking at purchasing a 15hp Suzuki outboard.
Good point..
Can't wait to see the new install will it be yamaha a mercury or a honda.......
I'm looking forward to the new motor too, and to be honest, I really have no idea what it will be yet! :)
I have a 2006 - 50 Honda and I been trying to figure out i switch my trim motor twice now o have a click on the motor and on the gear box what else can I try to do next besides getting a whole new one I have switch them twice and I get the same out of both of them any tips
very nice shop to work in...
Thanks mate.
I've just about had it with my Johnson! Lol! I have a 1977 Johnson 70 hp motor that's giving me fits! I've rebuilt the carbs, swapped out the reed valves, and found a weak coil which I replaced. My timer base seems to have a mind of it's own just taking off at random! I've made/posted 2 videos showing my problem. If you have 5 minutes to spare some day please watch "What's wrong with my Johnson?!! Part 1 and 2. Let me know what you would do! Cheers from Canada!
Hey Dangar, Your videos are so perfect i think I've seen almost every one. I watch them just to learn not that i need to change my dog clutch. lol But this video hits home. I recently gave up on a 50 HP seahorse Johnson that ran great and Have kicked way to much money into its replacement Anyways. What happened was the Gearcase wouldn't split from the midsection because of either driveshaft corrosion or twisted splines. I tried wedges and even cold steel chisiels. I could only get 1/16 separation around the whole thing. I took to a local mechanic he's said i was *&$%ed. In your opinion do you think i gave up to early? I should say I gave up when i saw gas and oil burp, then run down the from of the cowling by the driveshaft, which i thought was the crankseal. THANKS FOR THE AWESOME VIDEOS
Hi mate, glad you've been enjoying the vids. It's really hard to say exactly when to give up on an outboard, but when you can't get it apart to work on it it sure is hard to move forward. Sometimes buying a similar model and using the old one for parts can be a good way to go.
Time to go Evinrude ETEC! Good tips on deciding if it's time to repower.
You sounds like Peddley. He's always trying to convince me to buy an ETEC! :)
We have been an Evinrude dealer for 50 years! We sell tons of them. We're also a Mercury dealer and sell lots of the 40-60 Four Strokes
my favourite channel on the hole of RUclips 😀 love it
Wow, high praise indeed! I'm glad you like the vids. :)
I have a 1996 75 hp 2-stroke mariner , and it needs swivel pin bushings replaced. In your opinion is it worth all the work to fix ? Has 130 psi across all three cylinders, and good t&t , super clean under the cowl. but I know it has seen some salt water . What are the odds of tearing it down without breaking bolts ? Should I just run it as is ? Has lots of play .
Hi stu.like your videos..very detailed ...i have a question for you : let’s Say you have an engine Like this in your video and in the midle of the SEA IT stops, and you Cant Get home Ulnes you can row like a m...f...my idea is to have a small 2,5 hp engine that you can easily put up so you dont have to row home....can you Then let that 2,5 hp lay down horisontally in the boat without IT being damaged or anything?it is a 2 stroke so maybe gasoline or oil will come out of IT or reach parts of the engine that is not good?
Tord from Norway
Aidan Thank you Aidan.I have done that....i did not want the motor to Lie loose in the boat and may do damage to the boat or motor.if i met big waves.....my boat is an Alicraft 16 feet.
Hi sir first of all I want to thank you for the video
My question is there's a very Ald 17' ranger 115hp jonhson, for sale for $2,500 start ok and sound normal he sad the compression on 2 top was 125 and the 2 bottom 120 but I saw oil on bottom by the spark plugs he sad that that's normal on that engine due to the carburator, it's that right?
Yes, it is very common to see in oil in the lower cowling of a two stroke motor.
nice videos . Love your work ! I want your opinion , is it easy to find a replacement block ? Someone is offering me a Yamaha 85HP two-stroke that has a hole/crack on the block , you can almost see the piston through it . I am still not sure is it a good project to start icebreaking with outboards . Thanks mate .
no1 fan from Malaysia
Hi mate, that's a tough call. You will almost never get a block from a wrecker that isn't already a complete engine (with the price tag that goes along with that). It would be interesting to see what a block costs from Yamaha as they do sell them separately. If you are interested in giving yourself a project to sink your teeth into it could be a good one, but it certainly wouldn't be simple one! :)
hi im a new subscriber in your channel from morocco in north africa i admire what's you are doing i almost seen all your youtubes it's usefull im a bike mechanic i wonder if you need a help in your shop let me know
Hi Omar, glad to hear you have been finding the videos helpful. I want to get better at working on bikes so we might get to share knowledge one day! :)
lm glad you replayed so let me know when u r ready
On the ocean. When to give up is a bit different than if you’re on a pond. In my opinion. I can live with the occasional hiccup with my freshwater boat. I have an oar and a trolling motor that can get me to the shore line. On my center console. It stays on the saltwater all summer. If I start having issues while offshore. That’s a totally different animal.
Agree completely. Running around the river here with a boat that might conk out is no real risk at all, there is always someone around to give you a tow.
Dam i wish you had a shop near me (sydney) my 2004 Mercury optimax 150hp is having heating issues, impellar changed but no fixes yet
I would be looking at the thermostats next. Even if the pump is working well, if the thermostats are stuck closed then none of that water will flow through the head.
I've noticed that the tell tale takes 1-2min when the motor has started for water to flow out, and also the tell tale looks weak, anymore suggestions you could throw at me before i take it to a mechanic? thanks in advanced
Jay was it the thermostat?
Hi mate ..great vids! Curious where are you? QLD? Im North of Bris near Bribie. Love some of your wisdom re Yam90 I just got.. not sure to bin it or try fix.
Hi Greg, in just north of Sydney. It is a tough call to know when to bin a motor or not. Even if you are doing all the work yourself, parts can still be expensive.
Dangar Marine cheers man. Was hoping you'd say Bris.. I'd offer you $$for hands on wisdom. Best of luck with your future vids. You've got a great demeanour and delivery man, matched with know-how. Many thanks!
Thankyou I will check the stat and let you know.
Hey stu, just found ur channel recently and subbed.. Very interesting vids u have about outboards, I've never looked into them as I've always been an inboard diesel guy. We run a Yanmar 2qm15 diesel inboard on our 16 footer. Not the fastest set up in the world but really reliable never had any issues, admittably our boating season is alot shorter than urs. Have u considered diesel outboards like from say Yanmar? Never used em myself but I've seen people with that sort of set up. Their outboards are no slouch for a diesel. A lot quicker than our clunker haha. Keep up the good work lookin forward for more!
Hi mate. Inboard diesels are great reliable engines, I work on a few in the local yachts. I'm always had an interest in trying an outboard diesel, I'd love to see one up close one day and hear how loud it is. Yanmar do make good engines though so I'm sure it would be pretty smooth. Stu
5:57..'Bout Ready to Go To One Myself! (REST IN PEACE!)
My condolences. I hope you find a great replacement.
I have a 04 Yamaha 4 stroke 25hp was running and lock on me now won turn any idea what went run
The dog knows more than he's saying.
It's always the quite ones.
I had to replace a belt on my 2005 Mercury but I could not find a new one at all, not even dealerships could order one. I only found ONE on ebay from some guy in Africa. So yeah with that kind of difficulty to find a part, my outboards time is almost up. :(
That's really surprising. 2005 isn't that old at all and I find American brands are normally good at stocking parts.
I'm just hoping that if something does need replacing its not hard to find.
Great video's, your voice is all over the place though. Get a lav mic and a small zoom recorder you can wear. Sync audio in post, and your voice will sound much better and consistent. Keep up the good work!
Thanks mate. I think the audio is much better in the newer videos. I went with a shotgun mic on the camera in the end although I did use a wireless lav mic for a while.
Sennheiser MKE40 is a great choice ;)
Gday mate this is always a worry when you buy a second hand motor , you just never know if it is as good as the seller says it is when i bought a motor for the haines a 50 yam although there were a few cosmetic problems it seemed to be in half reasonable condition but i still did my own maitenance work on it to be happy in my own mind with it ,reliability is everything in an outboard motor if it isnt you will always have that nigling feeling about that problem "will that be ok ?,scrap it for parts try to recoup some of your money and move on is sometimes the best way .
Hi, love your videos. How good do you think 1975 85hp evinrude is. Are they good motors that will hold many years? Are they reliable? Thanks!
That depends mostly on the condition of specific outboard and the life it has had in the past. As a general model though I think they were pretty solidly built.
Looks like it's time for a new boat as well lol
Great advice, as usual!
Not much of a mechanic, but what to see what I can do about fixing my 2002 outboard 25 Mercury or to accept it as a loss. Newbie boat owner, did not realize on a 2 stroke I needed a mix. The motor is seized up now. Any advice or educational material you could recommend would be appreciated. I have the full motor manual and a decent set of tools and would like to learn how to fix this out on my own. If all else fails I can always take it in to a professional. By the sounds of it, is it a complete scrap or do I have a chance at fixing it? Im mostly worried about permanent damage, if I can unseize the thing. Thanks for any the info!
If it is still seized tight then it will need to be disassembled to see if there is damage to the cylinder walls. Often outboards will seize from lack of oil and free up again once they cool down. If the cylinder walls are badly damaged then it is likely to need to be rebored and over sized pistons installed which is pretty much what I did with the recent series of videos on the Evinrude 150.
Hello Dungar Marine ,
My ? : My brother has a 1999 Johnson 150hp w only low hours ( about 100 or so ) , the compression was over 100 lbs. in all four cylinders , but now all four cylinders are showing only 92lbs on each one & he says it has a little jumpy miss at idle h
What r ur thoughts as to why this might happen to this 150 Johnson 99’ yr model : all four cylinders were
over 100psi & suddenly all four cylinders go down to 92 psi with a little jumpy back miss ! Why would You Say in Theory ( motor is used in a saltwater
bay well above freezing all year every year ) ?
Mine kind of guy! Boats and motorcycles! Ride on!
Thanks Anogoya! If ever I went cruising on a large boat I'd definitely take a motorbike with me. So cool for exploring any islands you pull up to. :)
I just got a free 1990 Skeeter 200DX with a 200HP mercury blackmax, However it is missing the stator, flywheel and nuts that hold it together everything else looks good (carbs are in good condition, pistons look perfect, and no other missing parts) Do you think its still worth the time and money to fix this? Thank you
Hi Brandon, if everything else is in good condition then it definitely sounds worth getting it up and running.
Do you have a video on Transom repair?
Not yet, but it is a good idea for one as lots of boats seem to have damaged transoms that need repair and re-enforcing. Leave it with me.
good info,i bought a trailer sailor and 8 hp,cheap way
Sounds like a fun boat.
can it be used as a boat anker
I need some guidance. I have recently got a 1973 fabuglas boat with a Chrysler force 85 hp outboard. It has been sitting for a while and I rebuilt the carbs and rewired it but it needs a starter and a floor and the trailer. Would you suggest starting over or fixing it up?
It's hard to say without seeing it but finding an aftermarket starter shouldn't be too hard.
I've heard from several people that mercurys are notorious for constantly needing work as they age but Yamaha is a way more reliable motor is this true?
I've personally found the Yamahas to be more reliable, yes.
I've personally found the Yamahas to be more reliable, yes.
I love that dog 🐾🐾😍😍
That's Charlie!
feel for you and agree
i had the same problem on my catamaran yacht power cat 40 footer and the Yamaha Four Stroke Outboard 200 hp v6 3.3l and i was heartbroken when i had to give them up
Yes, it's a shame but as some point it just isn't worth keeping them going.
Yeah i sold them motors and went bigger becuase i wanted bigger more badass twin g2 300's on the back now now its going just under 75 mph with 20 inch 3 bladed stainless steel rebel props at 6000 rotations a min
w/ the old motors i got 47 mph with 18 inch three bladed stainless steels
Mr. Dangar question what do you believe 2 stroke or 4 stroke because I went too a marine shop some days ago with a friend and a mechanic told me 4 strokes are a wast of money ?
I personally like four strokes because they burn cleaner, are quieter and you don't need to worry about adding oil to the auto mix reservoir or fuel. It is true that modern two strokes like the e-tecs use less oil though. I have also found the four strokes to have less bearing trouble than the roller bearings in two strokes.
thank you I believe 4 strokes are a blessing lol I love them for all the same reasons thanks and love the videos .
I’m there, $100 for boat and motor. After watching video I notice my 1960s motor seems beefier, like starter motor bracket, but it has been stripped of carbs, coil, bug, wires, and cowling. Also notice my flywheel nut is recessed, seems the old merc was better quality at one time.
I definitely think all things are made more cheaply these days, and particularly out of thinner metal.
Hello, a great video as always ! What would you recomend, yamaha f30 4 stroke or honda bf30 ?
They are both very good motors. I find the Hondas to maybe be slightly better build but the Yamahas are easier to work on yourself. It's pretty 50/50.
Thank you very much for your opinion sir. Keep making great videos !
I'm a welder and i say you can't weld that. It will break of. Good video.
Yes, as well as breaking the alignment is critical so you would need to build a jig first and even then I'm not what caused it to happen in the first place (an therefore happen again as you say)
Well the engine housings are usually made out of metal alloys not a metal it self, so welding it would probably make a big mess.. Aluminium with some combining components are used in these engines.. Aluminum can be welded by a fast and alu educated welder, but if it is alloy you cant weld it no matter how hard you try.. These engines are molded and drilled. Not everything can be welded. Aluminium and metal alloys are very hard to weld and combine.. They melt rapidly and are tough to control. Impossible to make a good weld by hand if it is alloy mixture. The thread you add will never combine the way the mold will. Your weld will break to hand force. It won't hold at all. Good video, make more of them :D
Hey bud, I'm going to look at an 85 115 2 stroke to.morrow, it's on a pontoon that looking to restore. Is there an easy way to hot wire it
All you need to do is disconnect the white wire from the ignition when jump the starter solenoid like this ruclips.net/video/LZGnKldqDsA/видео.html
What's the length and width of that boat?
4.6m in length, not sure of the beam.
I have a '99 NISSAN NS70C outboard that the magnets broke loose and broke up under the fly wheel. The magnets and flywheel is not available from NISSAN/TOHATSU and after 3 months I haven't found a used flywheel. This engine is a 3-cyl, 3 magnet CDI sytem that was replaced in 2003. Is there any other outboard that uses that system that parts could be scavanged from? The engine is in very good condition and low hours so what would you recommend?
Hi Terry, that's a frustrating situation. I'm not sure of a direct swap, but was the flywheel replaced with a different system? Can you change to the newer flywheel and put the matching electronics under it? I know that would probably get expensive though.
Is this a 2 stroke motor or a 4 stroke ?
4
