Should I buy paint that has primer mixed in already, or just stick to primer first, then paint??

From a cost prospective, I use primer, then paint. Primer fills in the pores and gives a good white base on the wall reducing the amount of paint you would need for good coverage. Primer can let you see flaws in the wall before painting.
