Enjoying on replay from Texas. Thank you Roy, this was a special vPub for me. I was skeptical about the topic, but it ended up being one of the most enjoyable and at times felt like an old school flashback vPub from the past. I can’t think of another vPub that made me more excited to pour a dram than this one. Thank you for reminding us all to just enjoy our whisky this year. Dam the cost, the FOMO, the enshittification, and just enjoy your whisky. Wow. Cheers Roy, thank you. chrisg in Texas 🥃
Totally agree, keeping notes keeps me more present and focused on the whisky. Without note taking my mind tends to wander and I end up just subconsciously sipping. I enjoy reading through my notes for a particular whisky when I finish the bottle. It's a nice recap of how my experience changed throughout my time with the whisky.
A / in the quiz during lunch break today, delighted with that. Apologies I couldnt keep my eyes open so had to bail very early last night, just back from offshore for work and lacking in sleep.. For me, orkney oatcakes with french brie and a very sherried whisky is total perfection. Im glad they have reduced the price of that Aultmore 10 to £55. Im sure if came out at around £70 to start with... My bottle of Jura 16 is getting opened this evening, looking forward to it. Have a fantastic gathering this weekend barflies ! Gutted not to be there.
Nice chilled Vpub to head into what’s going to be a fabulous weekend! See you and lots of wonderful barflies Saturday Much love as always from the two of us
I actually had the same Lindt dark chocolate that Roy had (70% cocoa) so I tried it with Westland’s flagship bottle. What a great idea. They seemed to make each other better.
Catching the replay. As always, nice to hear what you are thinking and how to play with whisky. I never have whisky with a meal, also have difficulties to eat something else together with whisky. Coffee is my pairing if I need to pair. Also started with notes to help me to focus and find tastingnotes. 😊
Another fab catchup on replay. Having fun with whisky is essential so nice to mix it up on the vpub...plenty of time for rants later in the year when whisky distilleries slip up with some of their bottlings 😮😂
Now you're talking! Salty work with beer, but sweet - for me - nah. However, I can see ho wboth might work with whisky - another one to add to the list!
Great vPub! Great topic! The idea of blind testing yourself is really great, I didn't try it yet! I do feel a bit ambivalent concerning the idea of eating chocolate in combination with whisky. While sometimes this does work for me with really dark chocolate and a really rich sherried dram, when I've had some "too sweet" chocolate before the whisky often just tastes bitter and all the sweet flavours seem subdued... Anyway, fun as always! 🙂 I hope you had a great weekend!
Back in the 80's when I started drinking single malt the tumbler was the only sort of whisky glass there was.I don't like any whisky with ice,I just don't like the taste.I do love a Bourbon cask matured dram with Ginger ale though. I do like drinking a good dram and just enjoying the taste. No analysing at all, simply saying mmhh lovely flavour !! I have to admit I pulled out a Caol Ila 10 with 43% from the back of my whisky cabinet to frink watching this v-pub on replay.I haven't had a "Supermarket" Single Malt for many a year now but this long forgotten dram is going down quite nicely if I don't think about it too much and just enjoy the fun in the simple taste.
Hi Roy, enjoyable and interesting VPub. I love dark chocolate (at least 80%) with a sherried whisky. Put some chocolate in your mouth crunch it up then take a sip of whisky, then wait for the flavour explosion. . Slàinte Roy.
@Aqvavitae thought would get to watch this one live, but Helene came for a visit Thursday and made a mess, but getting to listen to the replay on generator power 😊
Good vPub Roy! I need to try blind testing myself. I once accidentally mixed-up Wild Turkey 101 and Rare Breed, and had some difficulty telling which was which, even though the Rare Breed is higher ABV. Got 9/10 on the quiz with help from the crowd, missed on Q10. Cheers!
Loved your blind tasting lol. I did a Masterclass at Penderyn in Llandudno two weeks ago and surprised myself. I was expecting to do particularly badly at the scent part as I have never done anything like this before but I managed a VPub pass getting 5/10. I was particularly conscious of what you always say. "Whisky always manages to take your trousers down" but I picked 3 out of 4 drams correctly so very pleased with myself.
Love it all, love the ideas and hate the quiz again. Monkey doubled my score but happily it didn’t get a pass mark either. My decision making needs a reboot.
Having had a big night which ended on whisky (millstone 100 from memory) out of a 2 litre stein (not full thankfully and ending up with a 3 day hangover, correct glassware is important!
Watching this on replay with red grapes, cheese and Arran 10 vs Cotswolds Signature and wow grapes are an interesting pairing with whisky! Honestly with recommend if you are looking for your whisky to bright sour and intense.
Also my favorite way to enjoy bourbon is in a tumbler with just the right amount of ice. Haven’t tried it with Single Malt, but maybe I should give it a go.

Oooh - I struggled with Brie, maybe I should've deployed the oatcakes too! Cheers Alasdair - I paid £55 for mine in June or July I think. Slàinte!

Much love as always from the two of us
I was chilled by the end of it for sure! Ideal before the weekend's madness. Happy birthday Hellen!
@@Aqvavitae thank you roy 🥰

So glad you found the same - not for discovering flavour in the whisky, it clearly corrupts - but what a corruption it is!

Spot on. I wonder if you've found the note-taking useful to the enjoyment Major? Cheers to you!
Yes I do. I enjoy my whikies on another level making it more fun 😊

Thanks Bob, we're going through a weird time in whisky right now - as well as other places - so it's good for me to have these wee distractions too!
Sweet and Salty popcorn or shortbread with bourbon matured whiskies is magic

I struggle with blind tasting, but enjoy trying. Enjoyed the vPub thank you

Loved the tips with glencairn glass. Always struggled to judge the size of my pours. Now I know what 70cl looks like 😮
Oatcake alternative: Hobnobs with Sherry Bombs
Oooh! Love it - will try!

@Aqvavitae, what is the sunday morning event at the GWF?
If you think whisky with chocolate is nice, try the two with a good cigar like a Arturo Fuente Hemingway, or a Havana...
Eye wee lad top of the morning to ya eye
