@@AstrixCloudhe's literally cut worn sections out of centuries old cathedrals and put in replacement pieces he made. Absolutely stunning to think cathedrals are now centuries old mosaics of thousands of such repairs and refurbishments. He's part of a huge thousand year old chain of workers. Just don't tell him all the technical skills he learned are Byzantine by way of France in origin hehe
Charlie, the heartfelt and creative marks that you inscribe on our ancient monuments will bear testimony to your talent for an eternity. Thank you! "A man who works with his hands is a labourer; a man who works with his hands and his brain is a craftsman; but a man who works with his hands and his brain and his heart is an artist."
Good to see this craftsmanship is still being kept alive in Europe. I did a 4 year apprenticeship as an Organ builder. Everything was done by hand. Unfortunatly our main customer (the Catholic church) decided to go with cheaper options abroad...cheaper being nothing is really handmade by a craftsman and all done by machines. My company went broke and so did my job! Keep up the good work Charlie...bet your old mans proud
I am a mason of some time but haven’t been on the tools for over 30 years - this takes me back I can tell you. Well done - it will live with you forever even if like me you come off the tools. Great skill and obviously a great teacher in the background somewhere. 👏👏👏👏👏
I did my apprenticeship as a sheet metal worker in the 70's I'm still working past my retirement . All my skills have been replaced with computer plasma, laser and water cutters. It warms my heart to see someone so young with such skill in a trade that still uses the same tools and procedures that are thousands of years old. Respect to Charlie and his trade
Wonderful to see a craftsman at work. My late brother was a stone worker. He died several years ago and you made me think of him. Wishing you all the best in your career-you will certainly go far.
SIMPLY AMAZING. This young man is going to live a good life, creating timeless beauty in a manner that pays tribute to craftsmen from thousands of years prior.
I’m a former tattooer of over 20 years and after putting down my irons and carpel tunnel surgery, arthritis and back issues I now train dogs professionally but identify with the notion of “no do overs” as with tattoos you can’t take it away as in stone masonry you can’t put it back. Your skills are amazing at your age, I have wondered how long you apprenticed for and what amazing work you’re going to be doing 10, 20 or more years from now! I have watched all of your videos several times and it’s simply sublime. I agree with the others that have asked for more videos if possible. Cheers!
i just wanted to say that he almost finished 1 stone in a 13 minute TIMELAPSE. The york minster is made of 1.000.000 limestones. HUGE respect for those who build these cathedrals and for people like charlie who are repairing these massive buildings.
Kid, keep doing this. I enjoy stone Mason videos. Especially hand carved with hammer and chisel. Believe it or not, asmr, scientifically speaking, can relieve physical pain. It's easy searchable. I'm in recovery from surgery, and the medication helps with the pain, but watching stone Mason videos and even wood carving are helping significantly.
After doing this work for my entire career and having 10-12 hand elbow and shoulder surgeries it’s a pleasure watching another craftsman pound stone… and might I say damn good young craftsman
You, sir, are a true master! I plan to join the Speculative Masons when I'm old enough, but I don't think I'd ever have the patience to be an Operative Mason!
If/when you do, try to find a Lodge with at least one teacher/mentor whose knowledge of speculative Masonry equals Charlie's skill at operative masonry.
I've come to here from your RUclips shorts. Please make more long videos if you can. It would be great if you can show different stages of work, even may be how obtaining the stock and doing rough cuts, installation of final product, etc
Where is part two? 😢 Man, you definitely should upload more of this amazing craftsmanship, i can watch it for hours. I bet your channel will grow in no time, please keep up the great work!
wow! what an amazing job, it dose look like you need a lot of patience, but wow imagine working on a wonder like Salisbury cathedral I'm so jealous good luck to you Charlie and all whom have transformed it back to her glorious self i can remember the statues as a child growing up most where so weathered, and then the scaffolding for ages! wow look at it now 😲
Just came across your channel. Great videos mate! I visited York minster a few year's ago. Great Cathedral and works department. Keep the videos coming buddy 👌👍
Amazing work found your instagram and man I could get lost for hours, youre very talented . Fellow maker here yet I work in machining metal, granite, wood , etc with manual machines and cnc machines.
You should post full length videos with no fast forward just you and the stone even if it make a vid a couple hours I would watch it I would love to have your content just kind of going in the background while I’m at work it’s very relaxing just put some nice slow music in the background and show the hole proses raw it would awesome
What a great job to have 😊 wish i could have my time over again, when I left school ( this might sound a little bit green 💚 ) but, I was of the impression that stonemasons only done grave stones . But in fact it's far more than that but didn't know at the time. Great work 👏.
Enjoy the vids. Just a suggestion...you're doing a job that it all about persistence, patience, and taking your time. Tik tok vids may be ok some times...but I definitely prefer the long form vids.
Hey Charlie, love your work. Can you make a vid on your favorite tools, makers, sizes and where you picked them up. Those little adjustable bevels are so nice…
Nice work my fellow mason but if I seen any of my apprentices hold a chisel like that a slap would be imminent 😂😂. Poor pinky going to suffer in the future .
Great workmanship. I have done a lot of stonework, a large variety, over many decades, it is always very rewarding, more of a craft than simply a skill. We’ve just put in a quote for a feature wall. In Dallas, there is an existing which was constructed in the recent past and its probably the worst job I’ve ever witnessed. Although saying that we carried out remedial work on random rubble wall that was built in the 1600’s, they must have been gassed when they built, unbelievably abysmal. Charlie, wear a mask or an Airstream type helmet you will get pulmonary disease or worst, in the old days Quarry men (extracting sandstone), rarely made it past their 40’s, silicosis killed them.
Random question: Have you ever read the fantasy novel Faith of the Fallen by Terry Goodkind? There are several sections describing the main character carving a statue and watching this reminded me of those chapters. I'm wondering how faithfully the carving was represented in the book.
Very hard and tedious work, but wow bro, incredibly satisfying. It must be an amazing feeling to know that you had a hand in the renovation of The Cathedral. I have a question, did you graduate from any Academy of Fine Arts? I admire
What did you do today? I watched Charlie bashing stones all day. Extensive work for every piece. Just like it was originally done. Bravo. Where in the world is the project?
How does he get surfaces so flat? I'm assuming someone such as myself with not an hour of hard labour would end up making flat surfaces uneven or wonky. I get he has a template but its not like he's using a level every 3 seconds, is it just experience and feel? Or is there some kind of teachable way to get stone that perfectly level?
Watching this with my dad, who was a 50-year master mason before retiring. He enjoys your work.
/G\
Does he realise his work will be around for hundreds of years after he's gone?. That's insane to think about.

Sorry to hear that. As a devout catholic this saddens me.
Respect man. I'm a web developer, so we've got undo buttons and backups. I couldn't imagine making any mistakes in your profession 😂

Somewhere, a Medieval stone mason is looking down on this and smiling, knowing that his trade's legacy is being carried on and shared with the world.
😂or Yelling him advices which he can't hear anyways...
Or Praising him that he should join a certain competition
SIMPLY AMAZING. This young man is going to live a good life, creating timeless beauty in a manner that pays tribute to craftsmen from thousands of years prior.
Mate, we need more of this beautiful craftsmanship. I can watch this for hours and hours. Keep it up Charlie 👍 Cheers
I have no idea how I came across your channel. But you make the world a more beautiful place.
Mr. Gee,
You are truly an Artist of unique talent and skill!! Bravo
Charlie, people will enjoy and revere your work for a very long time.
You can really see why it takes decades to build a cathedral. Respect

Great to see a young person taking an interest in a rewarding trade such as this.
After doing this work for my entire career and having 10-12 hand elbow and shoulder surgeries it’s a pleasure watching another craftsman pound stone… and might I say damn good young craftsman
Is there any way to prevent that level of damage like preventative exercise or do you have to just have to accept it in this line of work?
Oh the birdie! What a lovely bonus to an already fascinating video
for a modern young Man your talent is amazing it gives Me so much pleasure to watch

The only thing cleaner than your transitions is your amazing chisel work. Very nice!
Propper skill. Not just anybody can do this. Well done lad.
As an engineer its so cool to see things still being done by hand. Your work is awesome
The spirits of our ancestors watch over your proud, Brother.
And to think in another thousand years time, there'll still be guys like Charlie looking after The Minster ❤
I've come to here from your RUclips shorts. Please make more long videos if you can. It would be great if you can show different stages of work, even may be how obtaining the stock and doing rough cuts, installation of final product, etc
Watching this gives me anxiety. Knowing I could never have the patience but I admire the art so much. Amazing stuff
Where is part two? 😢 Man, you definitely should upload more of this amazing craftsmanship, i can watch it for hours.

Masterpiece in stone and music selection. Well done mate i could watch this non stop. Perfection

Cute bird! And I want a part 2!
It’s nice to see they are getting actual crafters for the Notre Dame cathedral rebuild and not just mold casting all the parts they need
He works on york minster uk it's not nortre dame cathedral 3:20
You definitely make it look easy!

Hey, my husband does that too! And we're equally fascinated by this excellent work. We need more long form videos!!
Makes you appreciate the work of 'Mason's throughout time, especially those Egyptians with their 'bronze' tools.

I have a question, did you graduate from any Academy of Fine Arts?

Were I able to put on this movie a million likes for your precious art
Excellent craftsmanship rivalling all the many dedicated artisans of the past. All done by hand. Is there a reason for not using any powered tools?
You deserve a sub!
Un artista niente 👍
Fantastic!!
This is a master
