    I almost wish they had continued on. Imagine the music Led Zep could have given us in the 80s. We could speculate forever where they could have gone next. But I can understand why they broke up after Bonzo died. This is still heartbreaking, over 30 years on.

    This was meant to be a warm up for American 80’-81 Tour.
    The band was changing direction from their previous tours were concerts could long winded or just struggling to make it through, (77’ tour comes to mind.) this was a cut the waffles tour, no grand stage effects, or wearing dragons or silky pants. This was raw LED ZEPPELIN

    They just wouldn't have been the same band without Bonzo, which The Who had taken a page out of Zep's book and called it quits after Moonie died but they never had as much respect for Moonie and what he brought to the band as Zep did for Bonham. Two bands where the drummer meant much more to them and their sounds then the average band. I was going to live my dream of seeing Zep in 80 at age 15 when it was announced John Henry had passed, I still feel that sting even today, I was just that close.

    • @cc352
      @cc352 Год назад

      Replying 10 years later. The Who should have disbanded at latest after Kenny Jones left the band. During the 70s, they were practically on par with Zep as the top hard rock band of the decade. Now they're legacy is nonexistent. Today, Queen gets more respect than The Who (taking nothing away from Queen). It is true that it is better to burn out than to fade away.

    This song is damn hard to do live. You can know that just from hearing the recorded one, so many mixed vocals, a greatly well mixed keyboard (Jones is a top notch producer) and the guitar riff... it's just incredible. There was no way that they could get any near their recordings. You have to carefully choose how to approach it, should the guitar or keys get focused? Should the vocals hit the Screaming part or the "Whatever" line? Should the solo attempt to keep to the original? It's truly not easy. That entire album is very tough to do live. This song and Night Flight, for me, are the hardest to do live.

    One interesting thing about the "In Through The Outdoor" album is that it's the only Zep album where there are more writing credits to "Jones/Page" then "Page/Plant" and that makes it unlike any album they had put out to date. Apparently Page was big time weighed down by his drug addictions and just wasn't at the helm for a time. I read that by the time they got on the road again that he had regained his position guiding the band. Don't know if it's true but I've read that. Still a great album.

    I just got the Empress Valley 5 CD set of this show. The first two disc are the soundboard mix, discs 3&4 are a really decent audience recording. The 5th disc is radio reports of Bonhams death. But its interesting to listen to both the soundboard stuff and then the audience stuff. You get a clearer picture of what it was really like there. I think by this point of the tour, they were pretty worn out from the hectic pace. Even though it was only fourteen dates, it was pretty much a mad dash to the finish line. They turn in a pretty solid performance here, with a few rough patches. For instance, White Summer does not go well for Page, and he just kinda keeps trying to dig his way out but it just doesn't work. And that particular piece rarely worked out for him on this tour. But this song, In The Evening, did tend to get better and better as time went on. I think its a pretty hard song to translate live, but I think they were getting there with it. It would have been interesting to see what the set list for the American tour would have been. I would have liked to see them nix the Rain Song, Hot Dog, and Since I've Been Loving You, and White Summer, in favor of some of the newer material (Fool In The Rain, Carouselambra), and maybe some things like Immigrant Song, In The Light, and Tea For One would have been a good substitute for Since I've Been Loving You. I think at that point in time the set list would have needed serious over-hauling anyway for the American tour.

    • @IronOrePickaxe
      @IronOrePickaxe 9 лет назад +3

      From Wikipedia:
      "Carouselambra" was never played live by the band at Led Zeppelin concerts. John Paul Jones once stated that his original idea for the song was for it to be used as a "centrepiece" of their live shows, using it as a medium between songs as they moved from one to the other. The band planned to perform the song on their 1980 North American tour, but because of the death of John Bonham, this never came to fruition.

    • @scottrobinson9752
      @scottrobinson9752 9 лет назад +6

      ***** I knew they had considered it for inclusion into the set, but not in that way. That's pretty interesting. Using Carouselambra in bits and pieces as a segue between other songs would have very novel.

      This is an old comment, but the drugs were talking I believe. Had he be cleaned up from the his alcoholism and weaned off heroin - I think he'd have been ok. Go read on his appearence All Right Now in 1980. He was VERY anxious, so the problems appeared to be deeper than Zeppelin. JPJ has also said there were problems at home for him because of those addictions. Did they contribute to his anxiety, maybe - maybe not. We'll sadly never know.

      It wasn't that simple. When Plant wanted to leave the band after his son died in 1977, he originally applied to be a school teacher. Meanwhile, Bonzo used to turn up to Robert's house practically every day in a limo. He'd drive them around in the limo to convince Plant to stay in the band

      The Elephant in the Room most definitely. I dislike all peopie talk is Bonzo's alcoholism but the more you read into it....Page's heroin habit was a definite tight rope. Bonham was the savior and scapegoat. After all, he was the ONE who convinced Plant to comeback in 78....only true friendship had Robert make a miracle move. In Through the Outdoor is a personal fav because it was done against all odds. The first Zepp reunion was in 1978-1980. The band ended as a brotherhood in 1977.

    I think that's an over generalization. I presume you are referencing Plant's description of the ride to the last rehearsal on 9/24/80, where Bonzo said he wanted to sing and Plant ought to play drums. I've read Bonzo was in the process of kicking heroin and on medication for it and the result was periods of depression. If Bonzo wanted to stop, you'd think he'd have told Grant he was done, no? Instead saying it only while drinking?

    Well...heroin is not the end of the line...it's only a marker...Can't tell you the amount of madness that has marked my life...but don't judge a life's end by the horse...it can be an end...or a beginning....

    .. hope it was a good friend who shared your feeling
    the guy who told me did so as an afterthought .. oh yeah - the drummer died today.
    .. didn't have a fucking clue and didn't think of the end (of zep').
    lonely day,wasn't it.

      gjrock70 probably would have made a few more kickass records and respectfully retired

    Amazingly tight (aside from all that Jimmy Page widdly woo at the end).
    I heard another live version from the Page/Plant tour and turned that off barely into it and Knebworth is kind of sketchy what with Page seemingly "distracted"...

    Facts? Well, Richard Cole states Bonzo was using heroin and went on to say Bonzo was in process of kicking by '80 and taking motival for anxiety. Other sources have confirmed this.
    I have looked it up, Take your snotty patronizing somewhere else.
