The machete is probably the most likeliest edge weapon one will see in a current combat situation other than the knife. This is the preferred weapon of El Salvadoran gang MS 13 that has come to the states. I recently started training it like a FMA bolo. It carries over real nice and is an intimidating weapon by itself.
Hey, couple points: 1. The fighting stance shown in this video is a bit narrow at times, which means that it'll be harder to use footwork to evade your opponent or repost 2. "if your leg is in front of your machete it's a target" is obviously wrong. If a body part (including either of your hands) is in range of your opponents blade it is a target. Why keep your machete out in a guard that leaves your hand vulnerable when you don't need your machete to protect your leg? Marc had to wind up a swing to strike the hand of his opponent because of this. Had he kept his machete pulled back in ochs (a guard in HEMA) or a similar guard where the blade is over the shoulder, he wouldn't have needed to waste precious milliseconds winding up for that counter attack. 3. Your off hand should always be behind you or covering your chest. This is so that it doesn't become a target, and so that you don't hit yourself on accident. Trust me, it is never going to be "useable" in the way presented here. Just try it in full contact sparring if you think otherwise. If it's tight to your chest though, you can use it when you get in grappling range to control your opponents weapon. 4. Your guard shouldn't be static. You should always switch it up depending on what your opponent is doing. My best recommendation to learn more about this would be to watch the plethora of videos here on youtube about HEMA guards. Preferably messer or falchion guards, as those weapons are both extremely similar to the machete. Or alternatively, check out Da'mon Stith here on youtube. 5. You're also never going to win a fight unarmed against a machete. It does not matter how skilled you are, the machete is fast enough to never be outmatched against your hands. Don't do it. Do not try to grab the machete hand as shown here. You will die, because your opponent is faster than that. 6. Are you... serious? You really think that a small knife is less dangerous than a big one? ..... Can the small knife decapitate you in one swing? The small knife can't even hit you if the big one is right in front of your face. Reach is paramount in a fight as portrayed in this video. The big knife is unambiguously better. And it's still fast enough to cut you 5 times over before you can even move out of the way. 7. The machete is generally made for cutting, and some cannot thrust at all because they have no point. But machetes are still good at thrusting. That falchion you showed would likely be used by a competent or incompetent fencer for cutting, at least as often as a machete would be used for cutting. It is wrong to assume what your opponent will use a weapon like that for just because it has a point. It is more deadly and scary as a cutter, so you should assume that it will be used as such. By your own logic, an arming sword would be used to thrust more than to cut, when in reality nobody ever really used it like that. It was versatile, and was used for both equally as much. We have historical evidence and plenty of experimentation in the form of modern day HEMA to demonstrate this. There is genuinely good information here, but it's surrounded by so much bad information that I can't ever recommend listening to Marc.

5:00 well sure, in terms of bare handed victim vs a blade, smaller is a bigger issue. However if you have that kitchen vegetable knife, and I've got a razor sharp claymore, I'm not very worried. Blade on blade, smaller isn't better - it's a question of reach. Bare handed defense against a blade... smaller is a harder target, and will cut you pretty bad. A slower bigger blade is some easier to defend against, but I don't fancy the reach of a big sword weighing 5kg in the hands of somebody highly skilled in bare hand and blade fighting. Really, you don't want to go up against a katana expert as an unarmed person. In terms of sheer death-dealing, a big heavy blade will chop a man clean in half, which is more dead than a two inch stabbing/slashing blade. The katana, machete, or european broad sword is a highly effective anti-peasant harvesting tool, and a small unit of armoured swordsman could conquer a pretty much unlimited number of lightly armed untrained agricultural workers with farm tools. This is why the japanese regulated blade length, with the longest blades reserved for the imperial guard and chief local warlords. A double-edged blade, european-style, is basically going to chop your head off, as a bare handed fighter. You really would want to run away as fast as possible, as an unarmed unarmoured person. There was not much emphasis on a hand-to-hand defense system against broadswords, there was only the long staff or spear, or a chunk or rope or chain. No chance bare handed. None. You'd get chopped up, simple as.
By the time your opponent sees blood, you stunned them already In theory and in practice it's a different and unpredictable outcome( the theory might tell and explain so but the practice may be a total different outcome) All in all set your mind set to expect the unexpected!

A long bladed sword isn't great for indoor settings, this movie is about a samurai who specialises in short sword and indoor fighting. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Twilight_Samurai Regarding a Bowie knife. If the robber/criminal has a knife, then a bowie knife would mean you are only equals in the fight. However, if the crim has a knife and u have a machete or short sword, then you have an advantage. Alternatively, a rapier (thrusting sword) is also good as it is for forward and back thrusts rather than any swinging motion.
In truth, there is no reason to choose a machete over a large Bowie or a sword. Except, machetes are cheaper and more available. I can go to Walmart right now and buy a machete for 30 bucks.
I always put my hand close to the opponent if im holding pretty short weapon like machete so to avoid that i use 2 short weapons pls teach me how to use two short weapons in your hands oh pls pls

Ramen King I typed a nice long wordy response and lost it. Anyways I think batons are awesome and really complement pepper spray by giving you knockout power provided you train it. Pepper spray The better weapon because there is no recoil minimal technique and it’s very hard to block but a baton is what you’re gonna need if whoever you sprayed thinks they can still take you even with their eyes closed. These two technique videos are what got me wanting a baton. no bullshido here just raw practical brutality. That guy is clearly generating well past knockout force with ease. I recommend you get one for yourself lol so you have a less lethal option than a machete. And that is why warriors of long ago .. go into battle armed with a sword .. and not a knife... Because it is less dangerous than a knife.. ?? Depends on the range of combat .. both are equally dangerous.. on open ground.. sword vs knife.. who would win?? In a narrow alley.. ?? The outcome is obvious..
there are machetes that are shorter than the ones in this video and u can hold them like a knife or use them to swing like a machete or a sword . but a knife can only stab or cut but it cannot chop . a short machete can chop , stab , and cut .
assistant striking at the weapon (and not as a beat), gross misrepresentation of tempo ("teacher" moving at .33x speed, assistant moving at .001x speed), parries that would actually funnel the incoming blade towards your unprotected hand, attempting to traverse while in measure and without any attempt to constrain the weapon or the body, and unarmed combat against a determined adversary with a sharpened iron bar (once again, ignoring measure and the significant advantage of time the person with the weapon has).... good god.
most weapons throughout history were modified farming and landscaping tools . like the axe ( became battle axe ) and pitchfork ( became spear ) large knives became swords , and even large hammers were used . the Romans used swords that looked much like machetes except they were double edged .
I think I would be more dangerous to that guy if I had a machete and was trying to get him with it than if I had a little knife. But most people arn't as good as me at using longer blad.
If you missed with the machete and he got in close with the knife, he'd be able to stab you repeatedly faster than you could do anything with the machete.
@@cedricburkhart3738 no, it depends on whether the guy with the knife can find an opening. Weight of the machete is only one variable among many that can be exploited to find the opening, and it's not even the easiest one.

Add a guard, ALWAYS add a guard to a battle blade
Please, how to you add a suba to a garden machette? Genuine question, I'm not trying to be sacastic
Tsuba
@@schizoidman9781 you remade the handle and add the guard
@@royalecrafts6252 I see. Thank you.
@@schizoidman9781 I would even heat treat and temper the blade as well
Are you the one who wrote commentary in what is self defense by Mitose James Masayoshi?
Is Jason still in the class?
Why not a sword or Bowie instead? Machete is a tool that can be improvised weapon. Sword is a specific weapon.
A long bladed sword isn't great for indoor settings, this movie is about a samurai who specialises in short sword and indoor fighting.

Regarding a Bowie knife.
@@Pharto_Stinkus a tramontina machete is cheaper and far superior.
@@SoldierDrew sure ok. but you missed the point of my comment.
*What type of machete are u using? the company and model name*
especially the the machete at 5:32 , the elegant one, what is it's name?
Looks like a Scimitar variant
I always put my hand close to the opponent if im holding pretty short weapon like machete so to avoid that i use 2 short weapons pls teach me how to use two short weapons in your hands oh pls pls
music in background is distracting
The man is legit Pay attention
As a home robber myself never saw a machete fight lol just kiddinf
Great descriptive terms. Excellent demo.
i like how ar suing the walmart machete for the demonstration
Well all I have is pepper spray and a machete. So I'm here to learn how to make sure you don't disarm me. 😂
I carry a baton and pepper spray. Idk about his forearm punch thing that looked really bullshido. Some parts of the video were good like the timing and distancing parts.
@@kellymoderator5253 Hmmm... I never thought of that. Maybe I should buy my sister a baton. I did get her some pepper spray. She doesn't want anything too dangerous in her house with the kids.
I just ignored that forearm punch. I agree the timing and distancing parts were good.
That said I’m gonna train sword/ machete for home defence too.

Rule #1 when figuring with a machete. Wear a hockey mask. +99 damage and immortality 😆
And that is why warriors of long ago .. go into battle armed with a sword .. and not a knife... Because it is less dangerous than a knife.. ?? Depends on the range of combat .. both are equally dangerous.. on open ground.. sword vs knife.. who would win?? In a narrow alley.. ?? The outcome is obvious..
thats why the Romans used short swords because they were like a sword and a knife in one .
there are machetes that are shorter than the ones in this video and u can hold them like a knife or use them to swing like a machete or a sword . but a knife can only stab or cut but it cannot chop . a short machete can chop , stab , and cut .
assistant striking at the weapon (and not as a beat), gross misrepresentation of tempo ("teacher" moving at .33x speed, assistant moving at .001x speed), parries that would actually funnel the incoming blade towards your unprotected hand, attempting to traverse while in measure and without any attempt to constrain the weapon or the body, and unarmed combat against a determined adversary with a sharpened iron bar (once again, ignoring measure and the significant advantage of time the person with the weapon has).... good god.
Very practical
Proper stance n how it affects a fight
RED SUN OVER PARADISE
Machetes were never meant for violence and cutting each others throats. People made it that way through their arrogance and rivalry.
most weapons throughout history were modified farming and landscaping tools . like the axe ( became battle axe ) and pitchfork ( became spear ) large knives became swords , and even large hammers were used . the Romans used swords that looked much like machetes except they were double edged .
Asgar blade from indonesia
0:48 bro don’t hold your machete like that you could get very injured
why
Chris because it could cut his arm
You got some fucken beer ?!
Bolo. Best Machete ever made
❤❤❤
There’s only one way… run!
Running is not always an option the attacker might chase you and you cannot fight back and when you are defending your family
@@subsonic9854 That's very unlikely.
@@cedricburkhart3738 I literally just narrated a fight I watched in a video from the Dominican Republic, but okay.
@@subsonic9854 It depends on how hevey the machete is.
@@cedricburkhart3738 no, it depends on whether the guy with the knife can find an opening. Weight of the machete is only one variable among many that can be exploited to find the opening, and it's not even the easiest one.

I have a better defense technique - Run.
the best weapon a soldier has is knowing when to retreat . retreating is not giving up , it is putting distance between u and your enemy until u can get the upper hand or get control of the situation .
Naahhh that shit dont work try it out and we will see🤣🤣🤣
If you're going to spend this much time and effort on this, just get an actual sword and learn to use it.
No tienes ni puta idea

Fighting with Machetes is not "bull-shido", it has been done for literally hundreds of years. Some famous example are Rwanda, Haiti, the Philippines...
