- What's up, people! I'm back with another Bee Gees reaction from their 1969 album Odessa, and this time we listen to "Lamplight," a track with great instrumentation and composition, as well as lyrics I enjoyed trying to interpret. So join me for another cool tune from the Brothers Gibb. Cheers!
Also I run a Patreon featuring extra content of different types, so anyone interested in supporting what we do here on RUclips and getting early-access to video-reactions and audio reactions blocked on RUclips, as well as behind-the-scenes videos, watchalongs, and blooper-reels from my videos, can go here: / shnootz

I was waiting a long time for this song, and I appreciate your intellectual and musical honesty to give your reaction
I will also be true to my musical taste,
even if it goes against the mainstream:
"Lamplight" is in my Top 5 among all Bee Gees songs
with Massachusetts, My world, Mr Natural
& Fanny (be tender with my love)
Robin's voice is fantastic, powerful and emotional,
one of his best performances
wonderful choirs
prominent guitars
beautiful strings and bells,
the beginning in French is beautiful
the end to all orchestra is fabulous
in short: a masterpiece, almost a mini pop opera
"Lamplight"
was sentenced to the B-side of the single,
(the A-side was "First of May")
Robin left the group for a year and half
and did a solo album
while your brothers did another album wuthout him
and for me he was right:
his song was more powerful to be side-A
"First of May" is a good song,
and it stands out in movie "Melody" (1971) ,
but isn't at high level as "Lamplight"
That's the beauty of music,
the different tastes there are for everyone
and learn to accept, respect and value differences
Thank you very much for making Lamplight's reaction
see you in another video
Kind regards from my country Argentina
I agree with you that Lamplight should have been the A side. It's not among my very top favorite Bee Gee songs (cause there are just too many), but it is superior to First of May imo and has grown on me more and more with multiple listens. I'm a Robin fan and think his vocals are exceptional on this song.
I'm always so happy when I see your Bee Gees reaction pop up! I can't say this is a top top favorite, but it has grown on me quite a bit with multiple listens and has made it to my mellow playlist. I do think Robin's vocals are exceptional in this tune and it reminds me how much I love Robin's unique voice. I still maintain it should have been the A side and it will be interesting to see what you think when you get to First of May. Oh, oh, oh spoiler alert - "Sound of Love" is my favorite track on this album and high on my overall list. It's another soulful Barry tune. Can't wait for that one!! Thanks Matt!
👌👌👍
I’ve never heard them say what the meaning behind the song is, but I’ve always wondered if the singer “gave her money” “said she knew someone” referring to an abortion, then watching and waiting. A hush hush subject discreetly and very artistically captured in music, as they were known to do. I can see it fitting into one possible storyline for the intended concept album theme, preceded by Whisper Whisper (drugs and sex outside of marriage).
See, the grey (not gray) shirt suits you beautifully.
This song has probably caused nearly as much division among Bee Gee fans as it did among the Brothers themselves. I am team "First of May." I like the beautiful simplicity and nostalgic lyrics of that song. I could never see why "Lamplight" was even considered as a single. It's more complex, sure, but that's not always a good thing.
As you obviously know, this was the B-side of First of May. I'm Team Lamplight, if I have to be Team Anything. I wish it had gotten airplay. I was a college Freshman in '68-'69. In Wisconsin, where we had "18 Bars." I'd play this on the jukebox, and people would stop gabbing for a bit, look up and seem to be thinking "What's that?".
@@DougRayPhillips Well, I'm all for Bee Gees getting attention. It certainly is an unusual song and fine for an album track. Would've been great for a college radio station back in the day.
my opinion; not a great track.
funny that this track vs 'first of may' had became the reason of the breaking of the original band.
the album in my opinion had much better and commercial tracks than those two.
but it is what it is, right ?
