Of the various versions of this composition which I have heard, this one is undoubtedly the best. Their is drama and humor, truly a fine performance of this fine composition that is never heard on FM stations in the USA.
I understand that Tschaikowsky considered this to be among his masterpieces. I did not know that when I first heard it, but my gosh do I ever agree with him on that!
What a wonderful performance of this immaculate piece. Tchaikovsky's sense of humour is in evidence here and the conductor doesn't miss it. Simply wonderful. Thank god for Tchaikovsky. Thank you for uploading this miniature miracle...
Those who know me would tell you that I am both very keen in my understanding of the arts (being a Visual Art Professor of many decades) AND that any comment from me is the truth as I see it. Are there any posts of your compositions that I might have the opportunity to listen to?
Strings sounding like a symphonic orchestra, that's amazing. The recording is great, the musicians are amazing and, well, Tchaikovsky... This is just sheer beauty - a manifestation of beauty and intelligence in music; if I could sit with three people of my choice and talk for an hour, Tchaikovsky would be one of them.
Simply the best version on UTube, not the least for the tempo-some are played at the gallop-others without the light and shades of this ensemble. This Conductor got everything right to my ears . Thankyou..
In the old days we would buy a record at the store and hope it was a good one. Now with u tube we get to try them all till we find the best one. This is it.
Funny you should mention that. Back in 1973 after twice hearing Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" in the same month, I bought an album that had it as the featured piece. While I loved it, the flip side contained this Serenade for Strings, which I had never heard before. Ever since, it has remained my all time favorite musical composition. Those first chords and then the ending are simply magnificent!
I picked up my first copy of this on vinyl on a clearance table at the U Book Store at U of M in 1970. That Arensky Variation on a Theme thing was on the flip side. I still have that vinyl and it's still in primo condition. I guard it with my life.
I feel again that people might benefit from knowing the in-joke here given excellent voice here. Toward the end of the Finale, the orchestra slows down, not managed so often in routine performances. We return to the chorale chords, heard at the beginning of the serenade. This is done for an extra-musical reason: Tchaikovsky dedicated this to a friend who was a staunch advocate of the supremacy of German music (Max Ermandsdorfer). But what happens to the very German chorale at the end - it merely speeds up and becomes the oh so Russian theme which pervades the last movement. Never underestimate Tchaikovsky's careful and sometimes carefree wit...!
Thank you for that inside information, which I knew nothing about. But then there is so much human character in Tchaikovsky's music, it is hardly surprising to learn this.
Glass ceiling? There are almost no women in this group. Baviaria is close to Switzerland, where some women could not vote until 1990. It's also not so far from Austria, where the Vienna Philharmonic first hired women in the 1997.
Your insight has me somewhat baffled. Did you miss that more than half of the first violins are women, including on the firs stand? Indeed. Your view is stilted and annoying. To bring up sexism in this example is just plain bigotry against men, so stop with the false glass ceiling nonsense. Now if you visit the Vienna Philharmonic and complain, so be it, but not here. The entire culture frowns on women who work outside of the home, so let the culture take care of itself and don't meddle. They obviously have things right else there would be zero women in this fine orchestra.
I'm surprised by the large sound from such a small ensemble. Maybe it's because the hall has a very live sound. Well that's good because Tchaikovsky specifically asked for a large string orchestra. I've been dismayed and downright pissed that so many stupid self serving conductors have tried to perform this masterpiece with 10-12 strings which dampens and weakens the sound that Tchaikovsky had in his mind.WTF? Where's the respect for the composer's wishes? Conductors like that should be beaten like a gong. This by the way was an exceptional performance.
John Tebbs No John, he is on the right site, you have more sewage in classical music than in rap, the classical division of music really should be changed to assical because the covert sewage they cover up would make the rappers blush.
I hate rap Classical composers, past and present-and I am one, thank you- cuss like sailors. However, we could do without self righteous bores who put on pious airs and like to tell everybody how to act. That makes you terribly immoral and hypocritical, John. If you don't like the language then leave instead of complaining about it. No one here is impressed with your low brow provincial comments. This is not the site to have your grandchildren babysat.
Again...too many wigglers and wobblers. Yeah - it's a great piece. Rather dynamic, yes. But c'mon girls (and guyettes) emote over it at home. Sit still and play the instruments. You're 1 of 50 fiddlers and it's not a chorus line. Get over it already.
The depth of this sorrowful performance is immeasurable, embodies the musical aesthetics of Tchaikowsky
The conductor so loves what he is doing and therefore makes the whole piece come alive!
Puh!!! Searched the nice,"spanish" 2.part for hours!!!Only knew the melody. One of his very best pieces.
Highly technical and precise, one of the best renditions of this piece.
A magical performance. I am speachless.

Lukas
The ending is the best I've ever heard!!
I AGREE!! extraordinary is a perfect adjective to describe this performance. The strings are exuding vitality!!
the vibrato sounds like it is in unison. Its just amazing. Its like everyone is playing with the exact same speed, and aligned time vibrato.

Very well thought out and crafted response. I agree with you completely on all counts.
