Thumbs this video up if you'd like to see an "Indie Game of The Decade video." Likes help me gauge interest for future similiar videos. I could get it out sometime in the next week as I already have the game in mind for it. Either way, thank you so much for taking time out of your day to watch my content this year. Next year, big changes are coming to Downward Thrust, both in how videos are made and my general attitude towards game critique. Let's just say I'm going to be celebrating more games rather than provoking controversy (whether warranted or not). Anyway, I've covered The Witcher 3 in-depth, but I could not deny it Game of the Decade. Instead of repeat what I've already said about the game, I decided to bring in other games and topics before going into why The Witcher 3 is the best of them all. Obviously, there is no measurement here: this is personal, yet I think the widespread acclaim for the game speaks for itself. This is a discussion video, so it's not all about The Witcher 3. He’d have to really, otherwise it’d come across a fanboy video where as this dude has taken the game down and gone into the issues and W3 has still come out shining.
I didnt care for witcher 3 much. didnt even finish the main story. the start of the decade was 2010 technically, the year New Vegas released...not the best graphics, frame rate and and it was buggy but simply the game i felt like playing the most and most memorable story. I vote New vegas as game of this decade!
@@donkeyIips Lol, stfu dude. New Vegas is absolute garbage and has aged horribly. Bethesda is going down hill year by year. Don't come here talking shit about The Witcher 3. Bethesda wishes they were half as compassionate and talented as CD Project Red. Even Breath of the Wild is a better game.
Just played through that quest line again and Return To Crookback Bog, wow.. I decided to free the Woodland Spirit and that ending stayed with me for hours.
I love how when it comes to most DLC's for most games, it's a simple expansion pack tht addes a reasonable amount of content for the game. CD Projekt Red? NOPE. We'll give you access to part of the map that's BIGGER than the main game and is equally as good if not better than the main content. Like seriously, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine made me think seriously again about the concept of DLC to begin with.
@@bladelazoe Though not as large as The Witcher 3 DLC, Oblivion did it first imo with its expansions that were relatively cheap and provided a large quantity of entirely new content and no reskins. Not anywhere as good as Blood and Wine, but I think Oblivion was the first to start the trend of good DLC... they also started the trend of shit DLC with HORSE ARMOR for 5 bucks lmao.
@@MrCholoPants3415 Got a point, I'm just saying then between those 2 expansions, there was an awful lot of "here's 100% story, now lets cut about 10% of that and make that into an expansion....or 20% of the main game and cut that into an expansion" vs a full game with actual expansions lol I never played Oblivion but I have a friend who LOVES that series and I heard all about it from him.
Oh man, the silent nod. So much war and strife in the witcher universe, but one thing that unites them across borders, factions and races...theyre all absolutely down for some silent nodding.
I still remember when Geralt looked at the camera after Regis said that we needed a well deserved rest. After playing the game for over 200 hours I remembered all "we" went through and I got shivers while watching the credits. I think this is the game of the decade since 2015, its an rpg of legendary proportions...
Random woman - "Help, my daughter is in danger. A griffin took her away. You have to help her white wolf." Geralt - "Absolutely ma'am. But first, how 'bout a round of gwent." Random woman - "Gwent sounds just about right." 10/10
@@FlapDaddy It's so bizarre to me that some of the first quests you do in Witcher 3, investigating the arson and getting the pan are maybe the most boring side quests in the game and they put them in right at the beginning as people's first impression...

As weird as it may sound, Witcher 3 cured my videogame addiction. Has enough hours to keep you away from other games, and after finishing it, every other game feels bland. Thanks CDPR!
Played Witcher 3 over a year ago now, and I still remember every quest, character and event you mentioned. The game is beautifully told and played out. Easily one of my favorite games ever.
Games I wish I could experience again for the first time: -The Witcher 3 -Skyrim -Red dead redemption 1 & 2 -Assassins Creed (Ezio Trilogy) -Modern Warfare 2 (Campaign) -Life Is Strange Season 1 -Tales From the Borderlands -Metal Gear Solid V -The Last of Us -Uncharted 4 (NOT IN ORDER) *Edit* : Pretty ironic that I was wishing to experience MW2 campaign again and about a month later they announce a Modern Warfare 2 Campaign Remaster.
@@ssj4rit Eredin is just badass, which makes him cool to me. He gives no fucks about anyone as long as he completes his mission. I like Eredin for his badass factor. But if I had to pick a Villain with the best development, I would probably pick Gaunter/Olgierd, although Olgierd isnt really good or bad. I have yet to play blood and wine, but I should have that done within a few weeks.
@@sherlock7127 I love old hunters but the beast of touissant quest beats 80% of the old hunters dlc and lore. Let's not get into how well they introduced Gaunter O'Dimm in the beginning, telling you about Yen and then disappearing, only for him to be the main antagonist in one of the DLCs. For the most part I dont thibk they're comparable, bloodborne's fighting system is way more refined than the witcher 3, but the witcher 3 focuses more on story than combat, where as old hunters has a very vague story, open for discussion and speculation. Then that leads to youtubers like vaatividya to do huge leaps in logic and sense to glue together some very vague pieces of lore. "Who could Living Failures be? Maybe an old ancestor of Gehrman?" (I think you get my point). Ludwig, Orphan of Kos, and Maria are all amazing boss fights. Let's forget about the stains that Laurence and Living failures left on an otherwise amazing DLC.
@@sherlock7127 they Don't come close to Blood and Wine. Blood and Wine is not Just an expansion, but whole diffrent game because of how huge it is. Hearts of Stone is far superior in story.

No game has ever been perfect..also it's always up to personal preference, but yeah these titles and also other just stand out in their own ways and you just have to love them and you just feel they have something different, something unique
Monster Hunter World is on my list at #3 simply because it actually managed to bring one of the most beautiful game series to the world without destroying the essence of the game!!!
I must be one of few in the camp that actually liked the Witcher 3's combat system and controls. Honestly, really enjoyed it. I liked how you could make your character very mage heavy, sword heavy, or potion heavy, or how you could mix and hybrid the styles. I thought the styles mixed well with the controls. It was easy to use magic in combat, or potions too. And of all the RPG openworld games I have played, and I have played many, Witcher 3 is the only game where I actually used potions and oils to buff my stats to help me kill a certain monster or enemy. Witcher 3 and with its DLCs are honestly a 10/10 for me. A masterpiece.
You are not the only one. The combat is satisfying once you get into it, challenging and rewarding if you plan a strategy. This nitpicking is just overreacting. The only real problem with TW3 is fistfighting in narrow places (e.g. at the gwent tournament in Novigrad), whereas there's always room to improve in other matters. The game is an absolut masterpiece.
I think the Soulsborne games may have spoiled us. The combat in them is just SO GOOD, the controls are so responsive, and the weapons are just so varied and impactful that really nothing is able to rival them. Which kind of puts other games in a conundrum. They can either try to copy what FROM did, in which case they'll all just feel samey and derivative, which won't do the industry any good, or they can make their own combat system, in which case they'll run the real risk of making something that feels inferior to Soulsborne. That's kind of what happened with The Witcher 3. It came out only a couple months after Bloodborne with a combat system that tried to have its own feel and which took a lot of inspiration from the Batman Arkham series, and it just wasn't as satisfying to play.
most people are saying the combat is trash because it's not primarily mechanically orientated, but instead, based on your builds and preparations. While i prefer dark souls combat over witcher 3, I still admire its combat considering how i have to put some thought before entering each fight. The ones who dislike it are also probably the ones who chose the lower 2 difficulties, because they don't require any levels of preparation, but moreso hack and slash. Thus they completely complain on how its combat isn't up to match with dark souls, yet they miss out on the best part of witcher 3's combat, that being how you must know your enemy, or die.
Whoever thinks the combat ia trash, do one thing. Download the Witcher 3 Ehanced Edition from Nexus Mods. It remasters the combat and enemy AI behavior. Check out videos of it on RUclips... Its super cool. It's so much harder, but when you master it, you really feel like a Witcher. Also it makes cooking potions so much fun, you will spend more time actually harvesting ingredients from plants and monsters.
@@alosnocallereal1734 i agree fist fighting was had some weird cut of edges especially inside but i loved the combat i dont know if it just me but geralt fights very much like this in the books.
Witcher 3 would definitely be my game of the decade. Time spent playing the witcher 3 just disappears like a magical dream. I get bored of big open worlds yet when playing the witcher 3 time just disappears. In just two playthroughs i sunk around 230 hours into the abyss that is witcher 3. At a time in my life when little interested me, my friend bought me witcher 3 one Christmas. And that Christmas holiday I could not put it down. Time dissolved when playing it. Normally after a couple of days of binging any media i feel burnt out, yet I had finished the game and all the dlc before I even started to think about burnout. Whilst i did not 100% the game on my first playthough i was by no means speedrunning it. For the first time in ages I felt passionate about something and that for me is why i hold it in such high regards.
I spent about 400 hours on my first and only playthrough. I haven't dared replaying yet cause I fear it might take some of the magic away. Witcher 3 felt more like a personal experience I made than a game. And every DLC was just so perfect, from the fantastic story of HoS to the perfect ending with BaW. When you ride back to Corvo Bianco one last time. I knew it was about to end and it just felt so right.
Same here, i love games and such, but get burned out pretty much always, but there are some things, that just resonate with me so much, that dont make me burn out
@@nunosousa8162 it's interesting how opinions differ, and I respect yours. For me it's the total opposite, I've played Skyrim for hundreds of hours but as much as I love it if I look at TW3 it just blows it away in departments like character development, narrative, acting, visuals, and even music. Don't get me wrong, Skyrim is a masterpiece for I play it solely for fun, while I play TW3 mainly when I'm completely free and I manage stuff around my playtime so I can get immersed as much as possible to enjoy the story, atmosphere and insanely well developed characters thanks to the books.

Here's i think why it's the best game of the decade: 1. The music and soundtrack😍 2. The map, the scenery this game offers. Especially at Toussaint. 3. The effort they put to each character/dialogue. 4. The impact this game made me feel. It made me laugh, frustrated, and cry.

@bronx zoo sorry bro but when i played nioh it kind a feel awkward maybe because i played ac origins before that for me ac origins have crispier movements than nioh tho i mean i can definitely dodge in nioh but i probably need to do it in advance like i saw the enemy lifting it sword ready to attack thats like the time youd press dodge not like when its about to hit you then you press dodge you instantly dodge that thing i do that in ac origins same with parry i really love the movements and the slowmos i get when that happens
@@kevinytb1372 You telling me that ac origins has crisp movement is enough to know that you're a casual gamer. LIterally all the mechanics you described in ac origins make the game worse, because they're all designed to make the game piss easy.
@bronx zoo yeah ive been a casual gamer since i was a kid. (Im more of a mmorpg guy) im just gunna say it. all the "hard" games have that delayed thing in their movements trust me when i first tried nioh all i could say is the camera view sucked in a small room but hey thats what makes it challenging for most peeps out there i know ur some sort of a fan of these "hard" games im just all about the story and changes the settings in ultra hard mode for fun. But trust me thats 1 thing i noticed about "those" hard games yes its true ac origins is easy cant argue with that but the point is the movements is crispy when you press dodge it dodges as soon as you press the button and thats why its easy unlike those "hard" games it has some sort of delay and makes you wanna press it in advance so you wont get caught up on whats coming for you.
I love the Souls games. But Bloodbourne is giving me a really hard time. There's one of those games where higher FPS could really make a difference and i am stuck with a stuttering, low res mess even on my PS4 Pro. I just can't get myself to play it like this. Still hoping for a PC version down the road. Or maybe an improved PS5 one. :/

No lock on, no UI for me please sir, thank you very much. Nice clean screen and full control over my character. Kontrol Freeks thumb grips really helps with the controller feeling too IMO. I experimented with alternative movement, but I actually like the original. I understand certain criticsms of it, but I also like the fact that the "clunky" controls actually give mass/weight to Geralt and Roach. Physics are involved, you can't just mindlessly charge at full speed everywhere all the time.
@@GMak81 yeah but you knew exactly what the video meant when he said "clunky" and so did the designers that's why they patched in the alternative movement and why its turned on by default. A fair warning. First: the game is highly addictive once it really gets going. The beginning is a bit sluggish but trust me, most of the 100+ hours is quality content. Secondly, the game is like the tv show in a way that it doesn't really explain any of the lore that much to you, or the characters you might meet. While Witcher 3 definitely stands on its own, it is a piece of a trilogy in the end. This game changed my life i would say. After spending almost 1000 hours with Geralt since witcher 1 my character developed too. Even some of my habits have changed. And i would never thought i’m gonna be listening to a song in a cutscene of a game for 3-4 minutes straight and start clapping and crying when it’s done. Witcher 3 especially was a magnificent game with perfect characters and presentation. It’s cast of voice actors top notch and it’s story is well thought. Unlike some other games and developers cdpr and witcher 3 is full of content with a reasonable price. Offers replayability and joy. Bought 3 games in a summer sale for 5 bucks. For 5 bucks i had about 1000 hours of immense emotions and fun. I cannot compare this kind of price to performance with anything. Witcher 3 is the best game ever released to this day and probably i won’t see a game that surpass Witcher 3 anytime soon. THAT GAME MADE ME WANNA DELETE MY MEMORIES TO BE ABLE TO PLAY IT AGAIN TO FEEL EVERY EMOTION AGAIN WITH EVERY SURPRISE!!!!!

mine is Divinity Original Sin 2, a complete masterpiece that does everything well. It is in my opinion, as well as the first, my all time greatest game. Layers of depth, loads of choices, it is the best of the old school game with new school tech. Simply, the greatest overall experience. the witcher 3 is up there as one of my all time fav games, what was accomplished at the time was incredible, from a graphics standpoint, excellent writing and characters. other games in my top list are Batman Arkham City, GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 1 & 2, Elder Scrolls Skyrim, farcry 3, bioshock infinite, the last of us, dark souls 3, bloodborne, wolfenstein the new order, doom 2016, octopath traveler, zelda botw, forza horizon 2 &3, diablo 3 ros, ori & the blind forest, celeste, titanfall 2, uncharted 4, prey, resident evil 7, RE2 remake, Nier Automata, monster hunter world, dragon quest 11, persona 5, total war warhammer & 2 I unfortunately didnt like the narrative of god of war, gameplay was ok, graphics were amazing, but it really didnt do it for me. it was a big slide down after your first confrontation with Odins son. Spiderman is another one, great visuals, gameplay is actually fun, but side missions, main missions, characters, the writing was a bit lacking, and the rinse and repeat side missions, and token chasing was really really badly done.
Original sin 2 as well as original sin are such good games and I was suprised because I usually don't like top downs or even turn based rpg's but larien studios gave it such charm from the great story to great characters and imo I can agree that larien or original sin 2 deserves that. I've been an fps player for so long and a little light on rpg's but both of those games make my top 10 all time, OS2 being in top 5.
I played DOS 2 but I am having a hard time bringing myself to finish playing that game a second time. That game has one big weakness. Way too much micromanagement. It was horrible controlling 4 characters. I literally kicked two party members out just so I had less to micromanage. I think the game is actually easier playing with 2 characters. I tried playing the game with 4 characters again on a higher difficulty but I do not think I will finish the game. I can not stand so much micromanagement. I really wanted to have 4 characters to play with but it is way too much a pain in the ass. I wish there was a better menu system and that a lot of it was automated. Like auto crafting so that if I say right click on an item it would list all the stuff I could make with it right then and there with 1 click. I have to bring up an internet page to look up some of the recipes that I could not remember and hold on to a lot of junk that I could need later so I could make some item out of it. Then I would have to go to the ship put it into storage and then come back out. The flow of the game kept getting interrupted.
@@SP3C7REGaming im in the same boat, I ever was into this style of game, watched a lot of boulders gate when dad used to play with his friend when i was young, but never got into it until origiin sin came out. if I could only play one game for the rest of my life, original sin 2 would be that game.
@@AzureDrag0n1 ahh yeah, item management was convoluted, but there was something i really liked about each member having their own packs, and I dunno, found it kinda therapeutic. I also liked taking notes as I played, it sort of added to the interaction a bit.

Out of all the games I've played this decade, I have to agree is the Witcher III. Personally, Nier: Automata also comes to mind, as it had significant impact on me and my understanding of the stories games could deliver like the Witcher III does so well. However, the Witcher III reigns supreme in my mind as what all games should aspire to be, at least in terms of storytelling and world building.
I’ve put 30 hours into this game and I’m literally at the start lol. Took me 5 years to actually get playing it cos I couldn’t get past the start. Now I’m having a blast
I bought Witcher 3 in christmas of 2016. I i knew nothing of Witcher, except i had heard by many, that Witcher 3 is the greatest game ever made. So i bought the GOTY Edition from sale. It took me probably 6 months after the purchase to actually start the game, and i played it for an hour and it just didn't stick with me. Idk it seemed hard, confusing and i just didn't have the energy to give it enough time. This happened 3 times. I started the game over, played for an hour or so, and just couldn't be bothered with it. Then came the summer of 2019. For some reason i just wanted to play it, i was like now i'm gonna fucking play the game, give it the time, learn all the things. And man. That was it. 3 weeks, 200 hours just for the main campaign. After i completed the main story, i almost got depressed. It left me crippled. Its the best game i have ever played, that's all i can say. If you like any type of an open world game, you must play it. Before i started playing it, i didn't quite believe all the praise it had got, but i was wrong. I think it deserves even more.
It was a beautiful game, the soundtrack was incredible.. and it fit so well with the picturesque scenery that the game provides. I cant put into words how it felt to grind threw velen and yes even novigrad and finally get to skelliga. So awesome
Initially I was hesitant in buying Witcher 3, since I prefer graphics over gameplay, but then I saw The Witcher on Netflix in 2019 & felt the urge for more from the lore. I bought this game in February 2020 & I am so surprised that why didn’t I buy this back in 2015. This game truly defines the generation of single player story driven gaming. The battle of Kaer Morhen mission is a Masterpiece, never ever seen before in any other game.

I love how when it comes to most DLC's for most games, it's a simple expansion pack tht addes a reasonable amount of content for the game. CD Projekt Red? NOPE. Maybe an old ancestor of Gehrman?" Martin Smith you gotta remember gta 5 and Skyrim
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt > Skyrim (all 100 remasters) though I did love it.

In just two playthroughs i sunk around 230 hours into the abyss that is witcher 3.
At a time in my life when little interested me, my friend bought me witcher 3 one Christmas. And that Christmas holiday I could not put it down. Time dissolved when playing it. Whilst i did not 100% the game on my first playthough i was by no means speedrunning it. I spent about 400 hours on my first and only playthrough. I haven't dared replaying yet cause I fear it might take some of the magic away. @@kevinytb1372 ??? witcher 3 feels nothing like nioh. Nioh is 1000000x more responsive and polished in their controls
I have played many games, but it never gave me that same feeling as the Witcher 3 did. My second favourite game is Bloodborne.
I love the Souls games. But Bloodbourne is giving me a really hard time. I was never a big rpg player. But when that trailer for TW3 dropped, I fell in love with something I didnt even know bro. The day the trailer dropped I went up to game stop and bought TW2. Then I bought the books. Went into the lore of everything I could. And when TW3 finally dropped, I basically busted a nut for hundreds of hours.

God of war - i know but he can .
Gwent - let me introduce myself .
@ШИРИШ Actually there were some bugs and some lighting issue's still a good game but nothing comes close to the witcher 3 in terms of story, side quest and character development and don't forget dialogue. I've played 500 hours on TW3 and only played god of war just one play through

CDPR needs to remake 1&2 in the same engine as 3. It's money, lots of it and they have the people capable of doing so!
Not really worth their time tbh. They usually polish a game very well so it'll take them a long time to do it plus less people will buy it compared to making a new game. Keep in mind, i said less as in compared to newer games not generally few amount of people will buy it. I hear that they're going for another witcher game after cyberpunk.

Persona 5 is my game of the decade 😅 It's my first ever JRPG and as you can see from my pfp, I loved it. I hope Atlus remakes Persona 4 and 3 for current/next gen.
Witcher 3 was my first game on the PS4, and it was when I truly started to think that current/next-gen video games from then on will be able to engross me in as much as any media format we consume regularly have been able to do in the past. It's been tough though because really, only a handful of games have actually been on par with the Wild Hunt experience so far. But the fact that the level of production, and delivery, developers can put out now is incredibly exciting. It's only going to get better for sure. Thanks CDPR!

I unfortunately didnt like the narrative of god of war, gameplay was ok, graphics were amazing, but it really didnt do it for me. it was a big slide down after your first confrontation with Odins son.
If dnd was a proper video game it would be this.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Just finished the main story today. Immersive as hell.
The only game that I completed every single fucking things side quest monster hunting fighting and wandering around for no reason feeling the weather and redoing for every choices that would make change differently
Truly a Masterpiece , My GOTD too .
No Game is Perfect butt it’s kept me busy for 7 years and Counting , Unreal Story telling 🍷
I’ve put 30 hours into this game and I’m literally at the start lol. Took me 5 years to actually get playing it cos I couldn’t get past the start. Now I’m having a blast
You are at the start of a great adventure and have no idea what's to come. I envy you.
Dr. Embersfield 90 hours in now midway through hearts of stone 😁

2020 too.
So awesome
Can’t decide between bloodborne, sekiro, the witcher 3, god of war, and breath of the wild
They all amazing but id put witcher 3 and bloodborne joint as best games this generation
U can, the Witcher 3 is superior
What an underrated hidden gem truly a masterpiece praise geraldo!
lol
Its not underrated its deservingly overrated gotd easily
Initially I was hesitant in buying Witcher 3, since I prefer graphics over gameplay, but then I saw The Witcher on Netflix in 2019 & felt the urge for more from the lore. I bought this game in February 2020 & I am so surprised that why didn’t I buy this back in 2015. This game truly defines the generation of single player story driven gaming. The battle of Kaer Morhen mission is a Masterpiece, never ever seen before in any other game.
