- I'M FINALLY DONE WITH THIS VIDEO WOW. Sorry it took insanely long, this was meant to come out last weekend but a lot of stuff got in the way, I quite literally finished the video minutes ago as I'm typing this. As I said, Sonic Colors Ultimate sucks (especially the switch version). It's a pretty bad port, and in this video I talk about why that is and why I think that.

In this stryxo youtube video I talk about why Sonic Colors Ultimate as a port is pretty bad, I also talk about Sonic Unleashed, the Sonic Colors Seizure Glitch, Nintendo Switch version of the game, and the Save Data Corruption bug present in the Xbox, PS5, and PC versions. The thumbnail is a great example of a Sonic Colors Ultimate Glitch and or Bug. Unfortunately in this video I don't talk about Minecraft 1.16, Among Us, Fortnite, or other similar games, because instead I'm focusing on Sonic Colors Ultimate. yes i copy and pasted from the last video, i'm lazy

Wanna know one of the silliest oversights in this remaster? After choosing whether you'd like the in-game hints activated or not, you're stuck with that choice for the rest of the game. There is no toggle to freely switch between on or off like in the original 2010 game and the only way to change it is by restarting your entire Save File 🤦♂️
Glad someone pointed that out, this port is so god damn bad.
Restarting your entire save file? That's ANOTHER thing entirely, because Ultimate only has 1 save. The original Colors had several save slots, and what's baffling to me is that the Save Select music is STILL playable in the Sound Test, implying there was gonna be multiple slots at some point, but those plans were shot due to lack of time, laziness, or a combination of the two. (The latter I believe to be the most likely due to Blind Squirrel's reputation of putting out buggy re-releases, combined with Sega's likely very shotty treatment of the studio itself.)

oh no, it's definitely not their fault. Sega on the other hand who force the developers to push the port out when it wasn't ready is FULLY to blame. Mofo's can't learn from their past of STOP PUSHING RELEASES. DELAYS AREN'T THE WORST THING IN THE WORLD.

I find it funny how Sega can (sometimes) respect its fans by making occasionally great media like Sonic Mania (original and Plus), Sonic Before and After the Sequel, the Sonic Boom TV series and the Ian Flynn Sonic Comics, yet also frequently be this cruel towards its viewers in the post-2000s by aggressively playing it safe with their games to the point of making them feel like nothing but either painful averageness (Sonic Lost World, Mario & Sonic at the Vancouver (where I reside as does Sonic Team with Sonic 2 the Movie and Sonic Prime) 2010 Winter Olympic Games sequels, Sonic Colours Wii, Sonic Jump Fever and Sonic Forces( or games that are so broken (Sonic Colours Ultimate, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric) they make Sonic ‘06 look like Sonic 3 & Knuckles (then again, considering how deeply mixed I am towards S06, that’s not a hard thing to accomplish)!

Apparently they actually gave Blind Squirrel a whole extra year and they still fucked it up. Judging by BS' previous.rereleases, I'm inclined to believe it was their fault this time
I set up my wii yesterday and I finally completed sonic colors after all these years. The wii version is amazing, I haven’t played ultimate but I probably won’t anyways. I wanna play sonic unleashed tho.

I wanted a Sonic Unleashed Ultimate, but after seeing colors ultimate, no please don't ruin this for me
play it on xbox. i have and had no problems except for a few funny glitches no seizure glitchesif music stops just pause and unpause the game.
I remember enjoying the Wii version, and seeing how botched this port is just makes me sad.

The only version of SC I enjoy is the DS version, but to give the Wii version credit, at least it’s not SCU and at least has a presentation that was more experimental and gorgeous than the game itself!
Now I’m not so excited for sonic colors ultimate because I was thinking it was gonna be a lot BETTER than the wii version but now I think that I might have to stick with the wii version since it seems better than ultimate

I still don’t understand how after all the Sonic games that were released buggy as hell due to rushed game development, Sega or it’s higher ups STILL haven’t learned their lesson. I’m so glad I can still play my original wii copy of the game, but this is still disappointing. 😞
Sega didn't develop Ultimate but still valid point regardless. Higher ups still should have made made sure the QA testing was good whether it was developed by them or not.

@@stitchfinger7678 majority of Sonic games aren't buggy messes. I can think of 3 off the top of my head in the last 20 years. 06 is 15 years old and is still used an example of how Sonic games are.
Plot twist: the game is buggy because the devs at Blind Squirrel studio are actually blind

This was my first time playing sonic colors also, despite playing literally every sonic game. It's nice to finally go back to it but it sucks feeling like you're playing a worse version
yeah honestly this is how I feel, like it would be super out of my way to bust out the old wii, but at the same time I almost feel like I owe the game to play it's best version instead of a bad port
You're better off getting the Adventure games on Steam or P-06 for free. Colors sucks ass, original or Ultimate
@@Stryxo It's pretty easy to emulate on PC. If your PC is strong enough, I suggest emulating it! (And be sure to keep it 30fps to avoid any bugs since the framerate is tied to the game's code)
@@yrooxrksvi7142 Yeah, its level design is comparable to sonic forces being even worse than it most of the time, and even at its best it's still worse than the worst level of generations or unleashed.
The only good thing is the physics, which actually work well for slow 3d platforming other than boosting like a car. I think that every future boost game should use the physics of this game, just making the drift and sidestepping on different buttons and trying to make them blend in with normal gameplay, not making them different sections like they were in colors.
@@leothehuman_9476 Yeah, I can sorta agree. Out of all the Boost games, Colors is the one that feels more balanced at slow speed.....in 3D. Sonic steers easily and picks up speed decently. Too bad there's hardly any real 3D platforming, and when it goes in 2D (a.k.a. the entire game), it's slippery and fidgety as hell.
Also, the double jump sucks. A lot. Give me the Air Dash over it AND keep the Light Dash for ring trails.
If anything, I'd rather go back to the Unleashed/Generations moveset with better physics. Or better yet, no Boost altogether. I'm fucking sick of it.

Doesn't sound bad to me, maybe some jazz chords or jazz influence? some of the bits are a bit iffy though.
for some reason the only thing i can remember from this whole video is that it made me realize i have astigmatism
I just got to that and also realized I had astigmatism and didn't even know that it wasn't how light looks normally

Smudges and streaks on the car's windows or on one's glasses also makes that effect. Squinting or stuff in your eyes, too.
They did attempt to recreate the cutscenes in the engine initially, there's leftovers of that in the game's files. They probably ran out of time.
Ok so I keep hearing that SEGA is the sole reason that this game was a mess and I think that is really just false. First of all Blind Squirrel doesn't have a good track record of ports and remasters already. Most of them like Bioshock Remastered Collection and many others were buggy messes on launch and still are. The only successful ports they had were ports that were overseen in development by other people. And I understand the argument that "Well game development is hard" because yes it is, but that doesn't really excuse the mess that we got. It's a bad port and a bad port doesn't deserve money no matter the good will of the people making it. And I'm not saying SEGA is innocent here because a strict deadline could have factored into this, but what Blind Squirrel made was a disaster. Visuals are gimped from the original game, features added have no way to be toggled on or off making it unfaithful to the original and easier than it should be, most of the cosmetics are lazy broken textures for Sonic's gloves without any major overall aesthetic changes. None of the new features really elevate the experience to make it better than the original game which is what a good re-release should strive for.
_apparently,_ Blind Squirrel was able to set their own deadline and are actually known for bad remasters that have oddly good reviews that get fixed in patches. that’s just what i’ve heard
personally, i enjoyed Colors Ultimate (even on Switch); both the graphics and the new remixes. my biggest issues are with presentation, audio and graphical issues, which i can honestly overlook; however, this game needs patches
The worst thing to me about this is that even though it's a separate studio who had the misfortune of rushing this game, it ruins the entire series' reputation again.
God dang it Sonic, just hold onto your quality for just a little longer...

I was actually going to buy this game because I've heard much praise about the original but something said to me "Wait for the feedback!" and I am so glad I listened.
If I ever happen to come across the Wii version, I'll pick that one up.
Also, separate topic here Stryxo, but what do you mean Sonic Unleashed is only available on Xbox? It's actually available on Playstation 2, Wii, and Playstation 3. There's also a mobile version but...mobile....

I don’t dislike this game because of the glitches. I just think the gameplay itself hasn’t aged as well as I remember.

I trusted SEGA with my money again, and this is what happens
I just got the game today since I loved the Wii version and the disk no longer read it. I've been playing on it today non-stop and got no glitches, I'm lucky I didn't get any. The opening to every stage loads up quickly and haven't gotten a problem.
Same here, but for me the stages take a little while to load, other than that, my game is fine.
If ur not on switch then u wont get many glitches, its just the switch version that's awful

I remember loving this when it released on the wii. Being almost 11 years ago I can't say I remember a lot of it but I remember an amazing soundtrack, (debatably) beautiful scenery and some pretty fun mechanics through the wisps. I also remember some glitches but they clearly didn't harm my enjoyment as a child.
I genuinely haven't played it in about 8 years but even the few times I played it after the initial playthrough didn't harm my views so I can't say my opinions are invalid.
With all this love it gave me a lot of pain to find out the port broke so badly. Having left my switch to rot in a corner, I really wanted a use for it.

I lost my wii version and was excited when this came out, but things were just so flicker-y that it bothers me to play it. I do hope this gets restored to its former glory soon...
Someone needs to pry Sonic away from SEGA’s inept management. We’ve suffered so many TRASH titles that could have been great if the execs cared an ounce for their player base.
My first experience with sonic colors (and the franchise in general) was on the DSi, and it used to be one of my favorite games (matter of fact im going to replay after this video), so I was really excited when I heard this was coming out. I still might try it, but it seems underwhelming

I love this game but everyone’s right, some things are bad…but! But…it WAS rushed! I think this was supposed to come out last year.
But, I still love this game.

So, I never owned any kind of console in my life, so I missed out on the original Colors (and is still missing out on it.) Dolphin refuses to run the ISO because of graphics issues, so Colors Ultimate is what I'd be stuck with if it was on Steam. Being locked out with *this* disaster as my only option is downright insulting.

Sonic Colors Ultimate is imo an amazing port, but OH BOY if your playing on switch you can’t play. I’m pretty sure it’s to the point where sonic team said they’re gonna start giving switch refunds.

Something i really hate about this port is that they changed the speak with your heart remix for something really worse like the one on the 30th anniversary orchestra was perfect why change it

I only just realized that sonic was moon walking in one of those cutscenes.
So interestingly enough, the dissonance in the piano is actually present in the original track. Its just made more obvious because its on piano instead of synths and stuff. It also sounds like it was mixed by some inexperienced college freshman with too much free time. I know, because I am also an inexperienced college freshman with too much free time lmao.
What REALLY distracts me in the remake is that they used tails icon as sonic's life counter.
Because that isn't Sonic's life counter. It's a counter that shows how many Tails Saves you have.

Whenever I used a wisp I rarely got the wisp music, and after beating a stage, only the first but of fanfare would play, the rest of the music NEVER PLAYED NOT ONCE.
Agreed with everything you said except saying that the terminal velocity remix is better because I personally think that none of the remixes are better than the originals because adding the extra guitars and rock music ruins the tone of most of the songs.
Also you get an achievement for sitting through the whole credits without skipping which is just stupid 🤣
one time i was playing this game and when i got to the water level, there was a segment where it was supposed to transition from 3D to 2D but it didn't, so i had full, glitchy 3D control in 2D. i was playing in mid 2022

I get serious button delay on ultimate when my jumps won’t register or my boosts won’t register occasionally it gets very unresponsive
I'm lucky as heck I did not encounter any bug or glitch in my hole play threw but I'm scared if I do
I’m either hilariously lucky to not have stumbled upon any of these issues, or I’m just glad that I can finally play any version of sonic colours and therefore not caring much about the “glitches”. Probably both…

It needed to not be Nintendo-exclusive.
It just needed a simple port with upscaled resolution, that's it.

Wii is like ps2 in terms of graphics but Wii is a little better than ps2. When sonic unleashed ps3/xbox version came out looks great and sonic team says "well next sonic game on wii because sonic unleashed sold better on nintendo platform" The game feels like step back in graphics but still has a charm for a Wii game.
I don't know how a game feels like you're playing on a specific console, but how does unleashed or gens feel like playing on a ps2
If they wanted Sonic Colors Ultimate to do well, then they probably should have MADE it well.
The only thing that sucks to me is the glitches. The rest of it is fine.

So I'm late to the video and someone's probably already said it, but: the piano in Tropical Resort isn't actually off-key, but intentionally dissonant. Now dissonance can sound really cool when used correctly, but this is absolutely not the place for it and you're right it sounds weird.
On Asteroid Coaster Act 2 on The Beginning to Get the Red Ring with Springs It Kept Bouncing Sonic Off The Map Killing Him Everytime he tried to grab the red Ring not only that but Sonic would fall through The Map
Got my ps4 version and it crashed mid save after finishing terminal velocity act 1. It deleted my entire game save because it got corrupted. I had to start all over again just to finish the game
It happened to me multiple times after I turned back to Sonic the music stopped playing until I died

Bruh, you're definitely not wrong about the sound mixing. I was playing the game with my nephew on his Xbox One and we literally had to just mute the TV because it was WAY too loud. Everytime Sonic attack, that piercing homing sound sfx would just blast our ears. It's ridiculous.
this was my second favorite sonic game, and blind squirrel killed it. they ruined it.

Imma get the Wii version
I played a lot sonic colors on wii and i think it's way more wonderful than the ultimate version for ps4, the controls cus sonic feels way more reactive to change of directions, the audio, the the sensitive of the wisps, basically everything
I started the game on PS5 and it soft locked the console because it couldn't even complete startup. The second time it soft locked the console and froze on the records page in options. It also fried my extended storage.
The GO text for rival rush looks like someone took the GO from unleashed ps2/wii but just in a different color
so far ps4 isnt running bad the only bad fact is the intro music is remixed btw the wii version has a better UI

@Stryxo Colours: Ultimate uses the Godot engine (Blind Squirrel Engine) for the gameplay & the Hedgehog Engine for it's visuals.
I played this on xbox and enjoyed it but it still has issues and the switch version shouldn't have been released like this
I got the Xbox One version and I did experience a couple of glitches. I had a level freeze out towards the end of Sweet Mountain Act 1 where the big sweets jar torpedoes out of the wall. I experienced audio issues when powered up with the wisps and some of the loading times weren't....great. Its such a shame because I really rated Colors as a well polished Sonic Game.
All though I really love this game cuz it was part of my child hood and I love the levels the wisp and the music but you gotta understand that game development is really hard and they didn't have time to fix the bugs
