He didn't expect them to win, he expected them to lose, he wanted them to learn the difference in their current skill level and the actual pros. You can see that initially all of the players think they have a chance, but eventually, their confidence dies and that's exactly what Ego wanted.

Uni teams in the uk play on public parks to an audience of 2 men, a dog and maybe a players girlfriend. And they only play other uni teams. And local ones at that. Even if the best uni team in the country played even a semi professional side from say the 6th or 7th tier of English football they would still get annihilated.
