Thank you got your video it’s the first video get to see with real tought in color , pls don’t stop this toning videos, I barely learning it ,I’m eager to start working , god bless to you .♥️
I am a Barbering and Cosmetology Instructor in Florida and I use this video for our Friday online hybrid teaching tool. You do a great job explaining and I would say you would make an exceptional instructor thank you!!!!
Thank you for walking us through your thought process! I've been using Shades EQ behind the chair for almost 4 years and I feel like I never really understood what I was doing. I would hit the mark most of the time but barely and without really understanding what I was actually doing. You also affirmed for me that I do need to develop a better understanding of each Shades formula- like what are the building blocks of a 7NB or a 9AA so when I use them can get a little more predictability with my results. Love it!
I would have to agree this is the best description and visual learning about toners. Loved you included your train of thought as well that helps so much too. Thank you for making these videos. I as well love shades eq, but formulating stumps me at times. This break down helps so much!! Thank you 🙏🏻
This is the best explanation on how to tone. Well, done, exceptionally good understandable instructions . I needed this info so badly because I was totally confessed about the exactly the things you discussed. Thank you so much. Please keep making your informative videos. And one more thing.....I really like that you got straight to the point without a lot of unnecessary words. So many videos I can’t get through about hair coloring because of their annoying chatter. A real professional you are, indeed.👍🏼
You explained that so well. I went to a Beauty College and did not learn much in the way of Color. Sometimes there was no instructor at the school at all and when that would happen they would have a student that was not too far from graduating instruct the students. Also, the school was very dirty. They would water down the blue disinfectant to where it looked almost like water . There were people that got an infection from manicures. I had zero respect for the owners.
So I’ve been using shades eq for the last two years. One thing I’ve noticed is that they all photograph exactly the same. I use 9P, 9V, 9T, 9GB, 10V and the upper naturals the most in my formulations. Every single time, no matter how I formulate, the photos come out exactly the same. They look different to the eye but not to the camera. It’s very strange.
Omg, how many videos I watched and this one so far my favourite 👍👍👍. Very good job 👏. Thank you I have a questions. what volume you use to activate your toners? The volume 10, lifts a bit your natural hair colour? Thank you 😊
Videos like this are soooo needed. I think that many educators feel that when newer stylists struggle with toning, it's due to a lack of knowing the color wheel. I disagree. We know the color wheel, but applying that understanding to different color lines who have their own color codes/lettering and package their contributing pigments within those codes slightly differently. The confusion comes from not understanding your product line and the contributing pigment that lies within the tube of color. I love how you first talked about neutralizing unwanted pigment, THEN toning for the desired result
How what formulation would you use to correct a toner that's gone too cool? If you mixed a warmer toner, would you still add a cool tone to balance the effects like you do when you mixed the one's in this video?
Wow! You are an excellent teacher! I understood the basics of toning, but your step by step process and reference to the color wheel and explaining undertones make it all crystal clear! I'm a natural level 1. I've got sort of an Ombre balayag-y type situation going on from mid length at 7-ish to the tips at a 9. I used 9P on the very ends last go round and it was beautiful! I plan to do much more highlighting next go and this will help with toning out all that orange! Thanks for the vid! Looking forward to more!
I'm not a professional so maybe I'm missing something but I don't understand why you would use a violet to cancel out all the warm tones like yellow and orange, only to use a 9AA to put warmth back in? Since she lifted to a level 9 couldn't you just use 9T and 9N, or 9T and 9G and use her natural warmth to keep it from being too ashy?
I use 9AA to make my ashy tones not so strong because the hair is porous. If I do not put a little warmth in my formula, the hair will turn flat and purple.
You have to account for the tones in the hair to counteract them! This is where the color wheel comes in great. The AA still works to cancel our the yellow as well.
Thank you I just had hair highlighted and they lifted color way to light then and way too many foils for a partial highlight, toned to ashy color. Not the natural honey blonde I wanted. Trying to get as much info as I can before trying to fix it.
This is the most helpful video I have watched on shades eq! I’ve watched many and most of them left me with more questions, than anything else causing more confusion. Now I know how they work. Thankyou!
This was one of the most informative and easy to understand video I have watched. You explain it very well. I just have to say we sound almost the same, I’m a Louisianan living in Australia so it’s nice to hear a dialect I’m used to☺️
Question- Redkin says that you should be doing this on dry hair but it looks wet here. Is that really any sort of issue? With that, how long do you leave it in for?
Definitely apply on wet so it doesn’t grab uneven! Root, middle and ends last. keep and eye on it and don’t get scared and rinse the minute you see the it oxidize!! Give it a chance to work anywhere between 5-20 min depending on how much deposit you are needing. Good luck!
Hm..I used Platinum (09V) to cancel out the yellow in my hair and I used the Café au Lait (09N) for warmth, but I'm left with very ashy, greenish hair that also turned much darker than expected (pretty much like the GN-colors)...I'm so confused. After watching this video (and some others) I thought I was prepared to tone my own hair, but it definitely was a fail and I'm still confused what happened. 😅Gonna look for a way to get rid of the green now, let's see in what mess this will result. 😂
For the first time someone explaining toning PROPERLY, without just the talking and the heads . Actual visual looking, talking and explaining real life scenarios. Also using actual products with the why? I would come to you for education girl! Please do more videos like this.
I am not a Cosmotologist, but use Redkin EQ. as a licensed Esthetician. You are amazing & a heaven send. If only more Hairdresser's thought before toning...you are really wise👋🏾👋🏾👋🏾👋🏾👋🏾
I am curious how the blending works. Do you need to be carefull not to mux the two toners (root darker toner + rest brighter toner) so it doesn't get splotchy and muddy? Good info. I want to tone my yellow hair with 9P + 9V.
Really great video!!! Thank you for sharing! I would like to know if you have a client that has platnium hair and they wanted to go to a warm golden blonde. Thank you in advance!!!!!
Girllllllllll thank you soooooooo much! This was so informative and helpful. I have been looking for this type of formula breakdown bc I am a prob level 2 3 hair trying to get to a 5 root and maybe bronde/ sandy blonde ends but have the hardest time getting the reddish underlying pigment out so I feel this video was perfect!! Thank you!!! thumbs up and sub from me💛👏
I need a recommendation for the right ratio and shades of Shades EQ toner. I want reduce warmth (yellow/orange) but I don’t want it too dark or too ashy. I have used to use 9V in the past, but it was making my blonde look dark/drab. I bought: a 9T (have been too scared of silver to try mixing this in) and I also have a Bottle of 10P. I was thinking of mixing: 10P + 10VV + 9T + then either 9N or a 9NB. This is for all over toner. Any suggestions?
I agree that level 9 shades toners can look drab! But I do know you have to balance your undertones. You don’t want to use just 9v you may even have to cut it with crystal and then add them add a pinch of warmth for dimension & body . Like ... 1 1/4 oz of 010GI , 3/4 oz of 09T chrome, 2oz of shades processing solution. Good luck ! And I am a licensed cosmetologist!
I know this video was from a little while ago!!! But I loved it I'm a hairstylist of I guess 3 years now working in MD /.^ I have avoided color I hated it nothing ever clicked for me and I found it so scary I'm really trying to do better try it more and better understand things this video really helped. Seeing your thought process with the charts and all it really helped and I really appreciate you putting this out there thank you 🥰
Can you also go a little bit further into detail about why you added 9N to the 9V versus adding another color? What would it have looked like if you just use the 9V?
It may be a long shot to get this question answered but here goes: why do some people use like 5 or even 6 different shades in their formula (other than clear)? I get wanting the "exact color" but it seems like 1. You never really know how it could turn out on a particular person's hair, and 2. Does it really matter?
That’s why toning services (for me anyways) are so specific for each person. Sometimes I need 3-5 different shades and sometimes 1-2. It just depends on the goal, the hair, the person, what it lifts to, etc! I love being able to customize that for my clients. 💖
Great video! My question would be for client 2 how did you know to use 9aa cvs something like 9g to give a little warmth. I never would have thought to use auburn
I really enjoyed your video it was very helpful , however i work with a lot of clients that have dark hair , so i deal with orange , brassy tones all the time! Can you please do some toning videos on dark hair.
I’m pulling very warm from my highlights. Like orange/reddish. I was thinking a blue/violet with brown to tan background. Do you think that would be a good choice? Thank you 😊
Hi you've explained so so well. Tha k you just keep in mind to show with your mouse/cursor/finger because we are trying to understand keep up and FIND what you are mentioning. Dont firget we are dumb and slow 😂😂 can I just ask you one question. Ive figured out bleach/ lifting and coloring hair however the to er/dye keeps on washing off. Is there sth I could add to make it REALLY permanent. Like I dye my hair with 12.1 sandre but after few washes I'm stuck with iky bleach color? That color doesnt wash off should I add bleach/powder lift to my toner? What would the ratio be? Any hel is highly appreciated!!
Very helpful video! Have you heard of the NA shades? Could you use those with V to create an ashy tone or would that turn green? (Blue + yellow = green)
So if I did a baylayage and used 7N an 9NA root tap and then gloss tone over blonde pieces used 9NA and 10n and when I want to refresh it with just a toner on the blonde pieces could I use 10n and 10gi?
Hi, I am 95% grey and colour my roots each month with chromatics 8N & 8V, could I use the eq range instead, I would prefer darker roots without having a band around on regrowth or do I need my permanent colour?
Thank you for sharing. I had a keratin treatment and it turned my hair color a brassy orange yellow. I am between a level 8 and 9. What do you suggest I use to tone the brassy tones in my hair. Thank you roseingeorgia
Blue neutralizes orange tones and violet neutralizes yellow tones. The NAs (natural ash) have blue and violet tones. The Ns (natural) also have blue and violet tones but less of an ash appareance. Ash makes hair appear darker so bear that in mind. And if you need a lot of warmth control, you can consider the VBs (violet / blue). Match level for level. If you’re a level 8 blonde, use 08n for example. I’m a natural level 1 but lightened to a level 9. I deal with considerable brass. I mix 8n, 9p, and 9v for my mids and ends.
Now every one wants to get roots touch up with highlights .roots stay brassy or dark ,some clients don’t like dark shadow root what to use on roots.so look blended?
Thank you! I just took a shades class and seeing examples IRL is very helpful
Thank you got your video it’s the first video get to see with real tought in color , pls don’t stop this toning videos, I barely learning it ,I’m eager to start working , god bless to you .♥️

This was the most informative toning video on youtube!
NEVER heard anyone explain toners so well. Thank you!! By the 2nd client I was guessing correctly along with you x 🍀
She does such a great job explaining the artistic aspect of coloring hair.
fully agree; this is the only video anyone needs to watch to understand toners of all kind... :)

On client 2 couldn’t you just dilute it with crystal clear to not turn her purple?
You really explained and demonstrated this well. Great job.
this video is so good and so explanatory!!! do you have more videos like this?!?
I'm just out of school and this is the BEST explanation I've gotten about toners. Thank you.
That is awesome!!! Thank you so much!! Keep on the lookout for more videos :)

I have a questions.
what volume you use to activate your toners?
The volume 10, lifts a bit your natural hair colour?
Thank you 😊
I use shades EQ processing solution since I used all redken shades EQ!!
Thanks for the feedback!
Can you add Olaplex 1 to the mixture?
Olena Messica you don’t need to! :)

yes! porous hair will also accept ash tones way quicker than warm tones
This is probably one of the most helpful toning videos I have ever seen. Your pace and explanation is on point for us folks at home on our Iphones
Thanks so so much!! I love what I do and just wanted to share with everyone 🎉💖
Hi!! You did an amazing job explaining this!! What Shades EQ did you do for Client 2's root tap? I want to recreate this look :)
Love this you really explained about the toners and showing the results was brilliant this really helped me thank you
I’m just curious how come you didn’t just use a 9n sounds like you wanted to neautrilze the color and 9n already has violet in it

You could use clear instead of adding the third color!! Otherwise your jyst canceling color after color after color!!
That was so helpful! Thank you!!!

Client #2 did you use equal parts of the each toner?
You’re officially my go-to for anything I’m wanting to understand. That was so helpful even after I’ve been to hair school
Will you please tone on a senior, with white natural hair. I would like it icy white or platinum blonde . Any recommendations
I have bleached hair & I want to do a root smudge my question is after I do the smudge do I put a toner on all of my hair or just part of it

Good video , I don’t love the 9v because the hair always looks flat to me. Do you use the 9p? I love that became it maintains the brightness
If you add some 9N to your 9V formula it won’t fall dull/flat!! I also love 9N/9P too! Try that next time and let me know what you think!

@@cheybbeauty Thanks ! I will definatly try that :-) I have used 9P and 9n Its beautiful

Thanks for sharing your knowledge! Do you process for 20 minutes every time you tone?
💕💕
No!! If the hair is very porous I don’t.
Can you also go a little bit further into detail about why you added 9N to the 9V versus adding another color? What would it have looked like if you just use the 9V?
You have to compliment the ashy colors “V” with neutral or they look too muddy!
I haven't used Redken Shades EQ before, I want to have an idea on how to mix it.
I use redken fusion 9n and 9gb. What toner should I use?

Awesome advice!! Thank you for replying, and joe thanks for the comment!! I agree with Barby!! I’d also try a 7P! It’s awesome.
Now every one wants to get roots touch up with highlights .roots stay brassy or dark ,some clients don’t like dark shadow root what to use on roots.so look blended?
I’m confused because all the directions I see say to use it on dry hair.
I always tone on damp hair 🤷🏻♀️
For brunettes can you complement 6gn or 6na with 6aa?
Brunettes already have warmth 💖
