- How could a piece of meat look so fresh after being left unrefrigerated for 11 days? It's actually been packed and gassed in a special process that most people never heard about, using harmless amount of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, which keeps the meat looking fresh and bright red for longer periods. The process is safe, but some people think that bright red color could be misleading consumers. Inside Edition spoke to a professor of meat science at Penn State University. #InsideEdition

Literally sick to my stomach. I used to be a meat clerk at Food 4 Less, and this is disgusting. Although I don't agree with not cutting the fresh meat in the store. We had two of the best butchers in the city in that store and we made at least 25,000 in the meat department alone in a week or so. The fresher the meat the better

I used to work in a butcher shop for a few years. I've seen almost every possible thing done to red meat, chicken, pork, etc. to make it look and seem fresher, etc. I have some horror stories that have turned people off from certain cuts of meat forever, lol.

In Hawaii, our "fresh" fish must be marked with carbon monoxide notifications. If the fish or meat is almost a bright pink, ask. Meat should be a dark, deep red. This fish almost glows, it's so pink and it comes from the Philippines or Mexico, not from our waters.

The experiment that they did with the two meats is pretty sure unfair. One meat was placed in a closed system, while the other was not. So the air had an effect on the meat without coverage, while the air had little to no effect on the covered meat. The results may end up pretty similar though if the gas is being applied.

They basically just package it in air without the oxygen in it to prevent the oxidation, the look isn't intended to tell you if its fresh but it's to make it more appealing.
I love how we explicitly need to ask if x and y is done to our food before they would digress such a practice. If they were so adamant their meat was so unprocessed then surely they would write it on the packaging right? Instead we get buzzwords such as organic and grain fed. I shouldn't really complain not that I buy my meat from the supermarket anyway. But that's just one factor I can control. I can't control the nitrates they may be using (mine doesn't use any) or them pumping the meat with water or how the animal was raised before slaughter

If you shop at a real supermarket that cuts their meat in the back , you don't have to worry about it. Walmart and other large chain stores use prepackaged meat. Stop supporting large chains and shop local and you wont have to worry about this at all

It is harmless... It is too little considering how much air you need to fill your lungs. Your body will get rid of it, just not as fast as CO2. You're probably breathing in more just running a gas stove.
