So The Lone Gunmen show was cancelled without a proper resolution after only 13 episodes. Chris Carter and company wanted to do a Lone Gunmen centric episode like in seasons 5 and 6 to wrap up their show. However, since they were the stars of a cancelled series the brass at Fox didn't want the X-files to use the Gunmen at all. To convince the network to use the Gunmen as recurring characters and give them their wrap up episode in season 9, the creative team pitched the idea to kill them off in their featured episode. Fox accepted on these terms and that's why the episode turned out the way it did. The episode was written by Vince Gilligan, John Shiban and Frank Spotnitz. In the years since Gilligan and Spotnitz expressed regret about the decision. On the other hand, the Gunmen themselves (Tom Braidwood, Bruce Harwood and Dean Haglund) were perfectly happy about their fate. So there's that.
This episode did make me sad just because it's the lone gunmen and then i was more upset when i saw Scully at the end and then i started thinking about how Mulder was unable to say goodbye. From what i remember from the podcast, they spoke about the show but didn't get into any specifics i don't think. It's a good listen as they talk about their experiences from behind the scenes...i even teared up a little at some things they said.
Probably one of the dumbest decisions in the show ever, killing off The Lone Gunmen. Their spin off series was a lot of fun actually and is worth a watch. I try to pretend this episode doesn't exist.
They will watch their show, once they have finished the entire X Files run. They knew it would habe been better to watch the spin off before season 9, but they did a patreon poll, and the majority didn't want them to take a break from The X Files.
The reason The Lone Gunmen died in the X Files show, is because the Lone Gunmen show was cancelled before they could finish the main story, so they finished it in this episode of X Files instead.
Nah the reason they died was bc chris carter wanted to punish his audience for not liking tlg show as much as txf. He destroys everything that isnt well recieved.
You can listen to the podcast. They don’t spend much time on the new seasons. They just talk about not liking the direction of the show at different times.
I love the Lone Gunmen characters, never got to watch their spinoff show. I found their solo episodes on X Files variable in quality and never ones I was desperate to rewatch. I guess Carter knew the show was ending and so just wanted to wrap things up and so killing the Gunmen off was easy, but it was a stupid episode and failed the characters utterly. I hate it. And now I can NOT wait for your reaction to the next episode!
I think that one of the reasons they eventually cancelled the show was because of the first episode of "The Lone Gunmen." It was too close to the 9-11 tragedy.
@@peterendall1621 Sure, but shows don't get cancelled in September if they aired the previous May. The writers would have produced additional scripts and even started shooting if they were to air by September. The X-Files season 9 started airing in November 2001 and they had shot a few episodes by September 11th. The Lone Gunmen show was fully cancelled before then.
the show really jumped the shark in that season
Still better than seasons 10 and 11.

You guys should’ve watched their show. It was hilarious. It made the death so much sadder man. I love this episode even though it is bittersweet.

The spinoff is way better than this crossover episode. Can't wait for you to react to it.

What lies in the shadow of the statue
The mentioning of Cousin Oliver....👀

In my mind they are still alive

Wait for the next one. :/

The last episode of The Lone Gunmen aired in May 2001. It was cancelled well before 9/11.
@@martianmanhunter37 back then show seasons ended about then and then restarted the next season around Sept/Oct.

saddest episode of my life... seriously
Did you get a chance to watch the "Lone Gunmen" show?
They said they'll watch it after they've run through the entire X-Files series, so after they've done season 11.
They most likely will watch it, once they are finished with X Files season 11.
