I bought it from a model shop, its a specific type of paint very dilute so it doesn't form a complete coat (if you ask at a model shop they should be able to point you in the right direction). You can get both acrylic and enamel washes. I would always recommend trying them out first to see what effect you get. Acrylics tend to dry faster, but the enamel colours can be more interesting. The plastic is a cut up I beam for model railways, but anything would do, its just to lift up the 2nd layer
Thank you. I used a dark brown enamel based wash. These can be bought from model stores. On different projects I have used several different brown washes (including water based ones) and all seem to work well. I tend to test them first. So I will get a random piece of plastic. Spray it with the brass paint etc then put the wash on and see what it is going to look like. This saves you making a mistake on the mask itself.
Thank you. The coarse paint is: Rust-Oleum (Make of paint) Stone Textured Finish Paint, colour Mineral Brown. The Fine grained paint is the same make, but the colour is Autumn Brown. The colours don't really matter if you are going to spray brass paint over the top, only the texture. They can be bought in hardware/DIY stores.
It was acrylic and I used the wash as it came from the model shop. i.e. no dilution. I would recommend that you test it first as some washes are darker than others. On some projects I have had to dilute the wash and on others I have used two coats. Enamel washes can also be used, but these can take longer to dry. I tend to use both (on different projects).
I bought those ones in Venice, but you can buy similar ones off the internet. Try to get the ones made from thicker plastic. There are some made from paper thin plastic which look OK, but are a bit fragile and I doubt would take the weight of thinks being added.
Those ones I bought in Venice on holiday. But you can get similar masks off the internet if you search for White Venetian Masks or Venetian Mask Blanks.
I'm not sure because you need to use a darker colour as a wash and on a black mask that would be impossible. You could try to use the texture paint and then spray over the top with a metallic black car paint and see how it comes out, if it is a metallic gloss ambient light shining off it may show it off well. The other option would be to paint it a dark gun metal grey colour, use a heavy black wash then dry brush it lightly with a dark gun metal colour.
I bought those ones in Venice and I agree with you I have looked and not found ones as good on the internet. I will see if I can find a place you can get them as I need some more as well. A lot of the internet ones are too thin or don't look as good.
They could be made out of paper. Are they flexible at all? Because plaster/porcelain won't be flexible at all. If they are flexible then you should be able to cut them up. If they are not flexible then they are more likely to crack.
You don't need to get those exact paints. The colours are not important as the texture paint layer is covered by the brass layer. If you search for 'stone texture paint paint' you should find something similar. The point of the texture paint is to rough up the smooth plastic of the mask, the brown wash can then accumulate in the low points and it adds a look of depth to the mask.
Hello, I have bought two plain white Naso long nose masks and they are made from either plaster or porcelain not sure which. I would like to try to do about the same thing you did. How would I be able to cut them?: They are thick and I was told that if I use scissors or an exacto knife that the mask would crack/brake.
wow this is amazing. If I wanted to get a similar effect, but end up with a black metallic looking mask instead of the gold-bronze one you made, what paints would you suggest?
Unfortunately not. I did find some one around where I live that is a costume designer and he would meet with me and he might be able to assist with what I want to do. So hopefully every thing will go accordingly.
I had a look. If you search for Volto masks you can find some. I can't put a link on here RUclips wont let me, but try justposhmasks then use their search drop down box to look for undecorated.
What did you use to cut the plastic masks? I checked at Michaels and they have masks that look like the ones you used, but they are thick plastic, and I am not sure how I would cut out the designs. Thans.
What kind of multi-purpose glue would you recommend? I need something that will stick metal-metal plastic-leather metal-fabric etc etc... Your videos are SO inspiring.
Any chance we could get a list of the paints used, in particular the wash? I would like to have a reference for similar products in case I can't find what I need in AU.
For the textured spray paints I used a brand called Rustoleum, the colours were: Desert Bisque for the fine grained and Mineral Brown for the course grain. (the colour isn't that important as it gets covered by the brass coat). For the Brass layer I used PlastiKote metallic brass spray. For the wash I used MIG Productions Brown enamel wash, if you want a darker look you could try their Dark wash. For the Dry Brushed layer I used Layton 70.801 Brass Acrylic (but any brass acrylic paint would work). Hope that helps. I do sometimes use other washes it depends on what the model shops have in stock.

Well to be honest Im not really sure if it is plaster/porcelain... I saw the tag and it says Made in China. I tried to call the stores beforehand and they're unsure as to what the masks are made out of. I did a search for Venetian Mask Imitations and what they could be made out of and the only other thing I could think it might be made out of is a very thick paper. (Not craft knowledgeable)
I'm not sure what you mean by structural paints. Do you mean the texture paints which give the mask its rough appearance? Search for Rustoleum or Plastikote stone texture Aerosol paint.
Dry Brushing is a technique when you remove most of the paint from a brush then brush it lightly over the piece. This only leaves a small amount of paint behind each time. The idea is to pick out the raised portions/edges etc to add more depth to the piece.

Thanks. I'm pleased with the way the layering of the mask and the paint job worked together to add depth.

It was a plastic I beam (for model railways) that I cut up. But you could use small pieces of plastic pipe.
Thank you.

Yes it does look like Bovril. But it is in fact a brown enamel wash from a model shop.

I love this. The mask is beautiful, and gave me some ides on how to make a robot mask I've been thinking about. Thanks.
this is one of my favorite masks

Well done. the finished mask looks great. Could you list the name of the two texture paints.

No I don't sell them. They are made as props for us to use in our short films.
This is so creative! Great job!
I'm not sure, Plaster/Porcelain can be very brittle I have not tried to cut either product.
As in from the Italian city of Venice. They make a lot of masks which are commonly used in Masquerade balls.
Your creations are outstanding! If I may ask, what type of paint are you using for the wash patina?
Thank you.
Nice. I'd like to give this a go. What are the pieces of plastic called you put on the back at 0:44 ? I'm pretty sure they have a real name.

a true artist. looks awesome!

Is the brown wash acrylic? If so what is the dilute ratio please? Looks awesome btw!
And can you plz tell me where can I buy the white blank masks you used, I can't find anything similar to yours on the Internet. Thank you!
wow that is amazing! Do you sell these? I love this mask!
I love this mask, I've watched this vid a bunch of times. I want to try one.
masks like that would be great to make creepy face masks for soliders in a movie or such
SteamTitan like the sons of the harpy masks in GoT!!

This is fine creativity
Did you use anything in particular to make the dividing pieces of plastic?
Where you buy all this stuff? i live in México but i dont think the names of the paints are the same.
What kind of multi-purpose glue would you recommend? I need something that will stick metal-metal plastic-leather metal-fabric etc etc... Your videos are SO inspiring.
Beautiful. I would love that on my wall.
This is super duper awesome!!! thank you for the wonderful idea!
excellent. Thanks for showing the process.
Any chance we could get a list of the paints used, in particular the wash? I would like to have a reference for similar products in case I can't find what I need in AU.
I will sort you out a list when I return to Blighty, I'm travelling at the moment.
It's A Trap! Thank you so much! Will be handy to know for the makeup/prosthetics course I'll be doing :D
It's A Trap! Hi , like TheAalarum can i get the list too please ? And thanks for this awesome guide , your mask is really cool !

How did you manager to make your cuts so clean? What sort of cutting tool did you use?
The plastic is quite thick but I still managed to cut it using a sharp knife. I then sanded the edges to make them smooth.
This is so cool!
This just saved me so much time! Thanks!
What were those plastic pieces you used to elevate the cutouts?
OOooh it looks beautiful!
What exact paints did you use for it?
Where did you get those masks?

U Sir, will have my like for this vid. Very inspirational.
Excellent Videos and excellent masks! I am inspired! :o)

please where did you purchase this style mask? i can't seem to find these exact masks.
so creative.
That one I bought on holiday in Venice. You can find very similar ones Online, but you have to search around a lot.
Where do you get the masks?
what did u use to raise the detailed pieces off the mask
just some small pieces of plastic, cut from a plastic rod.
What do you mean by dry brush over the wash with an acrylic .

thankyou
Hi, would you tell me please what you call "washer"? What is that?
Its a 'wash', a type of very dilute paint that only partially covers the layer below. It helps to make features stand out.
Thank you for your answer. That was my guess, but i was't sure. But if you use a diluent for this, that does not dissolve the codes beneath?
Attila Szabo I haven't had any problems with the paint below dissolving.
Attila Szabo
If the previous paint layer is dry, it shouldn't be a problem.
I liked it better in black lol, can this be done with paper mache?
Yes it probably can. But you may need to seal the paper mache first before painting.
Thank you. :)
Thanks, really good videos
What is the thing you use ate 0.43
For fixe the plastic on masque
Just plastic model glue from a hobby shop.
this is awesome !
Beautiful!

Very cool.

allan smithson For the wash I used MIG Productions Brown enamel wash, if you want a darker look you could try their Dark wash

After the brown wash dries off what do you do?
The next step is to dry brush over the wash with the brass colour.

Where to find the small plastic?
Model shops usually stock thin plastic rods than you can use.
you are a genious!
Just some model glue. For sticking plastic models together.
Awesome :O !
very cool, Thanks=!!
Bravo!
thank you
those are not recovered from the past! why?
Not really into humanistic masks, but this is really great.
***** That's cool. You should make a video of it when you do buy or make it.
I give this video extra points for not showing what you're doing when it's unnecessary and stupid.
*starts with some cheap plastic masks and shit*
There's no way this is gonna look good
*"And here is the completed mask"*
Well, what do I know
Foster's Lab It's the layers of paint that makes it. I would love to do one of these from metal, but it would take a lot of time.
Yeah, I understand :) But man, your work is awesome and very inspiring, I've been binge watching your videos in complete awe :)
Cheers from France!
