Beautiful but keep in mind this is just a nice piece of craft. Improper for real use in the current situation (leather, improper seal, no filtering). Please all, if you really desperate for a mask this is the best i found (for now). nothing to sell, just a link to share on how to make you own with tea cloth (and how it compares to a real mask).

I absolutely love this! My son has lung problems and wears masks like this daily to filter dust and allergens. I sew his, but a leather mask would definitely stand up better to the daily use (with some minor adjustments to how it attaches, elastic is a must). Thank you for the pattern and all the leather crafting advice in your videos.
If your som genuinely has lung problems, dont use this. This might be able to block large particulates, but the fine dust will still get through.
@@StuninRub I intended to modify the pattern to accommodate a replaceable N99 filter, the same way the fabric ones I make do. I agree, the leather alone wouldn't do him much good.
@@amygoersch8394 the N95 filter doesnt do anything unless it is sealed. The whole point of the filter is the force air through the filter, air wont do that unless it's completely sealed.
@@StuninRub As I said, with some minor adjustments to how it attaches. I'm not an idiot - having a medically fragile child who lives in a mask means I'm aware of how they need to fit in order to be effective. Cambridge and Vogmask both have leather versions of their masks that work effectively so it's something that can be done. Obviously not this pattern exactly as it's been offered, but you don't need to be concerned about what I do in regards to my child's mask needs unless you're his doctor who is checking to ensure the finished product is acceptable for use.
@@amygoersch8394 Maybe you don't know what's best for your child. Leave the manufacturing of medical equipment to the professionals.
I love the pattern. I changed a few things. For comfort. With the interior mask I used a butt end stitch to attach the 2 half’s which allows a smoother interior. Also I elongated the sides closer to the ear so one strap can ride above the ear and one below. I am a healthcare worker and using the ears to help keep it up on my face is a help.

I'm a complete noob in leatherwork. I have like no equipment, a thin and soft leather (butchered old woman handbag).
Using this pattern and following the steps in the video, I was able to create what I find a decent mask. I will definetely use it in LARP and in going the public places (since we have no current right to visit public locations not wearing a mask).

A true craftsman just love the tools the edge trimmer takes me back the the Asprey leather workers in London when I worked there in the 80's such skill.

Taradoxxi wouldn't it be a hygienic nightmare to disinfect all these tiny holes in a leather mask? Looks amazing, great craftsmanship but not very practical and safe to use.

You could spray disinfectant on the leather, probably. And throw the filter in the washing machine.

Thank you for the pattern. The normal mask with rubber always breaks. I will make today with your pattern, but at this time it will be difficult to get the filter online, because of huge demands. Do you know what kinds of filters you can put inside the leather mask?
N95 or N99 filters. My son has lung problems and wears masks like this daily to filter dust and allergens. I sew them for him and those are the inserts I use. They're hard to find right now, but once the coronavirus panic is over they'll be widely available again.
@@amygoersch8394 which insert you used to make handmade one? I do wood work, I have still 15 N95 masks left. I'm using them when I travel on skytrain in Vancovuer. We have just started the epidemic. more than 100 infected, one dead and most of them Chinese, Iranians, who went to vacation in China and Iran, rest of them are cruise ship passengers, who were infected and then docked in Yokohama Japan. Today the US has announced emergency by Donald Trump
@@bazlur-Vancouver For viral protection, I'd recommend a Cambridge brand mask. N filters (either 95 or 99) don't block small enough particulates to keep you safe from germs. If you have a vapor rated respirator - that will keep you safer from germs than a dust or allergen rated filter.
I prefer to use N99 filters, but will use N95 if I can't find 99's. They just offer filtering of a slightly smaller particle size.
a microfiber rag is also possible 🤔
Needs a foam seal around the mask in order to keep airflow confined through the filter. I wonder if you could cut a fitted ring out of a sheet of soft foam and then glue/sew it to the inside of the lining of the mask?

With all that glue and stitches I think air is confined pretty well but the idea couldn't hurt. Plus if you use a coating (not just natural burnishing) for the outside no air can go through

Have you worn a cloth mask in 90 weather? That's plenty of sweat, too.
Leather let's you breath but is waterproof

The craftsmanship and the feeling remain me of Alexandra McQueen's leather outfits. Truly a piece of art but yet practical as well. A little suggestion, maybe an extra button can be added at the end of one side of the strap to make the length adjustable.. Just personal view, I could be wrong as this is suppose be an custom made mask. Anyway, thanks for sharing! Love it!

Only one real issue with this mask, cleaning, the problem I see with this mask is that you can't just dump it into the washing machine to decontaminate it, it's a nice idea for low level filtering but overall when you think about it you will be breathing into this which means your vapour will be blown into the leather any bacteria will be held in the leather unless it has been water proofed and regularly recoated which means chemicals.
A face mask either needs to be disposable or washable and this simply isn't.
I could be wrong but that's the way I see it, but it's a nice project.
@@robotmechanic7471 But being bees wax it wouldn't last long with hot breath being pushed onto it continuously.
And may end up with other types of bacteria forming or sticking to it, as it will be a greasy substance it may also attract dust.
But I get where you are coming from, I like this mask it's a really nice idea but as I said the problems I see with it may causes more problems than it solves.
A mask should be either washable or disposable, yes the filters can be changed but the actual holder of the filter needs to be washable or disposable or you could be harbouring much worse problems than just dust.
Leather is notorious for holding onto dirt, dust and other things, it's a natural product so cleaning leather is important, but usually done with chemicals to stop it rotting, I doubt anyone wants to be breathing in the dust of rotting leather coated in beeswax, I know I wouldn't.
Neoprene is a good substance for face masks because it can be washed and now you can buy these masks at a good price on ebay and amazon.
This mask shown would be a good project for fun or for other purposes nudge nudge wink wink.

The PM2.5 filters look like they might fit this perfectly. However, the seal around the face might be an issue. Soft rubber or even suede around the edges might help to make a complete seal. The dimensions are the following (imperial/metric) 4.9''x3.1'' / 12.5x8cm. Try and mean that out in cloth and see if it fits in the mask you just made.

Fantastic work. Really beautiful edge burnishing. Mind if I ask what glue you use to make your laminate layers? I use tanners bond contact cement and it makes a sticky mess!
