The run capacitor shifts the voltage in the start winding so that it’s out of phase with the run winding. This is what causes the torque that starts the motor to turn. Each phase of a three phase motor is already 120 degrees out of phase with the other phases so no start windings or capacitors are required for starting a 3 phase motor.
Yes, in other words the evaporator needs to melt and become dry before starting up the condenser again. Good idea in explaining to the customer to wait until tomorrow to insert the disconnect bus bar. Lucky customer only needed a capacitor !
When I usually do to my customers units when they freeze up I turn the heat good and hot then afterwards I shut off the furnace refer around 5 to 10 minutes let it defrost cake the heat back on and let it run until the water quits running out the condensation pipe once that happens fire up the AC again
Happy "Jour de Naissance" Mr. Lavimoniere! Good call in checking that new capacitor--just because it is NEW--don`t mean that it will DO! (Especially these days).
Steve - your channel is excellent. But your description of what motor capacitors are for could use some improvement. Their purpose is to have the AC current in the motor coil they are attached to occur at a different time/phase than the coil directly attached to the line. This gives the magnetic field that drags the rotor a direction of rotation, as is the case with three phase motors.
Happy Birthday, Steve ! Question: When the coil freezes up, can't they turn off the compressor (Cool --> Off) and just keep the Fan running (Fan --> On) ? That is what was always told to me when my unit froze. "Turn the a/c off, change Fan from Auto to On...will be there in 2 hours..." Or did the tech give me bad advice? I don't really care, it was an apartment building, so I didn't pay for it.
Happy late Birthday Steve!!! In the 1st video when you took out the extra gas. Could you reuse that gas in another system that has the same type of gas?
I have been waiting on this problem of freezing up so I could tell of what happen on a job a few years back: It was about 102 degrees outside and I walked into a building to do a floor job, after about 15 minutes there the owner of the building came into the building cussing and raising hell, say we had turned the air conditioner too low messed his air conditioner and he was gonna have to buy a new unit! What was he talking about? did it blow up because someone turned it down too low?
more than likely the guy was worried that if turned down too low the evaporator coils will freeze over and that can cause problems. Units need to cycle regularly so that the evaporator coils can deice if they do not then air flow through them becomes restricted or stopped and that means the liquid refrigerant delivered to the evaporator does not flash to a gas and absorb heat as it is designed to do. The result is no cooling but worse it can mean liquid refrigerant making its way back to the suction side of the compressor and can damage the compressor. That suction side is to receive refrigerant in the gas phase, not liquid. It would take a while for this to happen, not likely at all that it happened in 15 minutes.
More than likely his filter is plugged, his outdoor unit is dirty and possibly plugged or the system could be low on charge. Or maybe a combination of all three. Some of these owners dont understand preventitive maintenance even after it is explained. Looking for a free system upgrade. Wish you the best
You were driving in awesome neighborhoods of the craftsman era. I photograph old homes and just love the mature trees and landscape in your area .

Turn it to fan on, you’ll have AC as it clears the ice. Old school.

I always wondered that too. And does he give the customer money back for the gas? Since it's a high priced commodity, and all.
Happy 59th birthday.
Why not turn it to heat and melt the ice on the indoor coil and wash down the compressor with water
Dang, those titles sound like a TV commercial. Lol. Sounds like your birthday was on the 12th. Hope you enjoyed the day.
Happy late birthday!
Happy belated birthday 🎂
Hope miss Molly baked you a cake lol
If the customer really wanted their a/c back sooner, could they run a hair dryer over the coils to defrost them quicker? Just curious.
the inside coil would be a giant ice qube .. big block of ice
@@stevenlavimoniere true, but melt-able right?
@@SheilaSpencer1 maybe if you can get the door of ..best to just stuff if of its not running right then you wont have to worry about a ice berg
That Other Company was probably wanting to make it a Leka Momma.
Happy birthday Steve. I was 69 1 week ago
It's gonna freeze up at that suction pressure
Happy birthday Steve
Happy Birthday, Steve! Great job, as always!
