    My ziplock bag trick is to discretely pack the kids' lunch at the all-you-can-eat breakfast if you have one in the hotel 😂but seriously, a ziploc bag of croissants or muffins or whatever are a lifesaver for sightseeing with young kids.

    I have a 22" Eagle Creek roller bag that has detachable backpack straps that I love. It was pricey but worth every penny. Super light weight but sturdy with nice lockable zippers. I keep a garbage bag in the strap pocket JUST in case I have to ramp check it - the whole bag goes into the garbage bag and stays clean - sorry baggage handlers but those cargo holds are dirty. Recently purchased an Osprey Daylite Plus backpack as my personal item and am quite pleased.

    I used cubes and staffed bags. I used the hotel-provided shampoo and body wash. I add a few extra-thin wired hanger to use to dry my clothes. I wash my clothes in the shower. I do need to not over packed.Most of the time, I hardly wear half of what I bring.

    There is one more very good use for small ziplock bags, storing different currencies. If you travel to countries where the currency is different from your home currency you can store the different leftovers in small ziplock bags for next time. So you do not end up with a mixture of Euro, Swiss franc, Czech Koruna, etc which you have to sort out the next time you travel. Even if you use your cards most of the time you will need some local currencies for certain places, lockers, public toilets, etc.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  10 месяцев назад

      Great tip! I try to spend all my currency before I leave a country (especially if I'm not 100% sure I'll return), but sometimes I'm caught out without some change when I need it.

    I love the Eagle Creek brand. Strong, durable, water-resistant, feather light. I have used these mainly for snow holidays packing jackets, pants, beanies, gloves and anything poofy. Sea to Summit another breath brand too especially for their lightweight padded electronics cubes.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  Год назад

      Yes! Although Eagle Creek changed hands a few years ago, and their luggage (which I loved) got pulled. They've since released a new luggage line, which I haven't tried. Their packing cubes are KILLER though.
      And Sea to Summit makes so much great stuff! I'm particularly in love with their toiletry bag - super light, strong, and practical.

  • @CarolRawlings

    Super tips and videos Nora! I consider myself a pretty good packer but you always show me something new! I always carry ziploc bags but never thought of that laundry idea! Something I never travel without is a roll of electrical tape. It’s stretch, reusable, and waterproof. I use it on the tops of all my liquids - wrap around the top, stretching as you go, for a perfect seal. Removable and restickable! Recently I used a strip to tape a face mask on to the blinds that kept tapping on the window frame with every slight breeze - worked perfectly to stop the annoying sound!

    • @NoraDunn

    If the sink doesn’t work, then just stand with your dirty stuff in hand, give the stuff and yourself a wash, rinse and stuff it in a towel to twist dry when you’re ready The hotel clothes lines in the showers are useless. I have an old two line elasticised twist line with hooks, that works great

    Thanks for all the tips and I've been sealing my liquid bottles leak-proof like this for years! I agree that zip lock bags are so useful - they can even double as a doggy bag for leftovers or a poor man's compression cube! Just a note for laundry - often you can take the liner bag out of the garbage bin in a hotel room or cabin and use it to wash hand laundry (but use the zip lock if it's not dry when you have to leave).

    I got a small knack pack for Christmas and just used it for the first time. It is unbelievable. The size fits under almost all airplane seats. It fit most of my clothes for a week and you can unexpand it when you get there and use it as a small backpack. It’s great.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  Год назад +2

      I have the medium-sized Knack pack, and it's fantastic. When fully expanded and filled it's a bit too large to fit under the seat, but I love having the freedom to get a few things along the way and not worry that I don't have any space. Worst case scenario I expand the Knack bag and put it in the overhead bin, and I can check my carry on suitcase.

    Nice suggestions once again - here's one to consider, never bring those Hydroflasks, Yeti, or Kleen Kanteen - they take up a good amount of room when you stick in the seat pocket in front of your seat - try using a narrow flask, it allows extra leg room and every extra inch helps.

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  Год назад

      It's difficult not to overpack for cruises since lots of people like to bring multiple dressy outfits for the dinners! Those alone will take up a lot of space. So if you don't want to overpack, pay attention to bringing items that can be used in multiple scenarios. For example, perhaps you bring one nice black dress and accessorize it differently on different days/nights.

    Not the point of the video, but that top is beautiful on you! I've hemmed and hawed about the hobo roll because it's round, which is great for a backpack but wasn't sure about how efficient it would be in a suitcase. Glad to see you show it here again and I'm going to take another look at it! Wanted to share that as a hiker and sometime 'gram weenie' , I've never gone so far as to cut my toothbrush handle down or cut out clothes tags to save weight but I do shorten those velcro cord holders so they only wrap once and are less bulky. If you're close to a weight limit, teeny things can add up! Be forewarned that it can become a weird obsession. 🙂

    Regarding supplements, at customs I have seen some concern by inspectors that they might be drugs, any comments? If you have any prescribed medication is it wise to have them in their original bottle? Is it possible to have RX’s filled while traveling, in particular pain medication?

    • @NoraDunn
      @NoraDunn  Год назад

      Hi James,
      I tend to decant my supplements into ziploc bags for space-saving reasons. I've never had them questioned or confiscated, but if they must be, then so be it.
      I suggest keeping prescription meds in their original bottles.
      Regarding getting RXs filled abroad, it depends on the medication and the country you're visiting as to whether it's available.

    Nice advice. But no matter how you compress and stuff things: you always have to consider the weight of your luggage and personal item. There are weight and size restrictions ! I am purser for almost 30 years and almost daily see people with way too large and too heavy items of luggage. There is a misconception on the “personal” item. In my company this should not exceed the size and weight auf a “normal” handbag or bag back. Often times passengers bring their mini suitcase (way too big and heavy) plus an extra bag the size and weight of a baby elephant and trying to sneak this in as a personal item…. Not on my shift. Thing is: if we left everyone on the plane with so much stuff- where do you think we can stow it? There is no magic button the flight crew can push to have more room. Or a secret stowage area we hide purposefully from passengers….just to make them angry. If we did, trust me the company would put more seats in to sell them. So keep this in mind when travelling. One more pro tip on packing toiletries: just take what you need for the first night(s) and buy it in your destination provided it’s not in the middle of nowhere. I use it up in my vacation and the remains I just leave there….

      It depends on where you are going. I buy my supplements and keep the container seal intact, same for Advil or whatnot. I had a huge issue in Vienna over an opened bottle of ginger capsules and will never, ever do that again. Some of my prescriptions come in sealed bottles and I leave them sealed. Also, you can google where you are going and see if what you want to bring is legal, CBD being a prime example. Nothing like going to jail over a simple mistake. Also, get a paper copy of the prescriptions you take, just in case.

    Put all your empty packing cubes in a pile.
    That mass is eliminating space in your bag.

      My packing cubes don't take up any more space than plastic bags.....at least not ostensibly. I have another video where I compare (with a demonstration) packing cubes vs rolling; the difference was actually negligible - which surprised me! I expected rolling to be much more of a space saver.
      As for the liquids - never had a problem. They fit the guidelines.
