@@blakkdeaff4460 They were also there at Humlehagen 2022, but I didn't know if they were international enough and for english speaking people to understand.
I could be misremembering the past (probably) but it seemed like out of all the 'The the' bands of the 2000s (The White Stripes, The Vines, The Strokes, etc) The Hives seemed to be the most dismissed at the time which makes this album all the more exciting and satisfying to listen to.
I still remember being a freshman in high school when the Black and White album dropped. Instantly fell in love with these guys (despite the bit of a letdown that Lex Hives was), and I’m so glad they’re back 🤘🏼
Great that you reviewed and enjoyed this, if anyone has the opportunity to see them live and enjoys a song like Bogus Operandi, I IMPLORE YOU, go see them! You will not find a more energetic, fun and committed live band, they are born entertainers. Pele's crowd work the best in the business, this summer I saw them with 600 people and then with 20,000 people, both shows kicked ass. Go!
I’ve never really been a Hives fan. Nothing against them, I just think I missed that boat on the first trip around. This came up on my stream and gave it a go and I LOVED it! Driving on the 405 in LA traffic daily, this record has become my “moment of zen” after work. The record I didn’t know I needed! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
dude I just found them too - the Hives rabbit hole is DEEP ... it's kind of mindblowing I never heard them before but thannk God they exist. New albuym is EPIC
Countdown to shutdown is one of those riffs where you wonder how it was never recorded before- it sounds like an instant classic, like it was always there.
The Hives are genuinely one of the few groups out there that I get nostalgic for from my middle school days, right around the time that I first listened to music outside of mainstream radio. It's actually amazing how well their musical ideas have aged considering how so many of their contemporaries (such as The Vines) kind of faded into the wind. This record very much proves why they're still around and relevant in indie circles after all these years.
Love this album so much I think the only song I'm not that crazy about is the bomb atm but honestly I missed them and for an 11 year wait the fact the energy hasn't ceased is incredible
Everyone knows Veni Vidi Vicious because that one had Hate To Say I Told You so, but god muthafuckin damn, Tyrannosaurus Hives is a straight 10/10 banger-after-banger mastapeece of an album.
I was worried at first when you frontloaded your complaints of the album but I'm glad this album is a good comeback for them. Hopefully there's more in store down the line from them.
damn i gotta say i'm surprised cause i thought you were gonna write this album off but if you say you have a soft spot for them then i understand that you liked this album, honestly this album is banging an 8/10 for sure and i love the bomb, it doesn't take itself too seriously and is fun to shout along to
I really enjoyed the album. Stick Up ended up being one of my favorite songs actually. They’re definitely working out the patches from their hiatus, but they’re onto something!
I agree with how the album ends less bombastic than it should have. Countdown to Shutdown probably would have worked much better as a closer track. Freaking loving this album though, they still rip!
Knew this score was coming and it's pretty much how I felt on the first couple of listens, but a lot of the little initial hang-ups have grown on me since then and I think this could end up being my fav album since Tyrannosaurus Hives (though the Black and White Album era is when I was biggest into seeing them live). Some of their best songs are on this and that shows hella promise for whatever new material we hopefully might get from them in the future.
I heard the singles and I have to say they sounded fantastic. Didn't know if the rest of the album could keep up with them even though Veni Vidi Vicious DEFINITELY kept up with its frenetic and direct singles. This is 23 years later, though. Is the band going to be able to keep that energy? I wouldn't count on it. But they are intelligent and canny which are two things that don't go away with age, luckily. And they're more important.
Trapdoor Solution is such a banger snd you nailed it that it could essily be on Barely Legal. Im absolutely in love with the song. The album is great, not their best, but really great.
The Hives and Young Fathers are probably two bands who dropped an album this year that I enthusiastically ran back after it was done. It was wonderful to have them back!
I saw them in a festival setting years ago in San Diego with the likes of X, MGMT, Devo and more. They were likely the most hyper / dressed to the nines / full Stones meet Elvis meets Franz Ferdinand etc. Put on a great show. It's always weird at a festival because all the bands are so vastly different and the HIVE are essentially a showy band that belongs in a cool interior venue and they are going all out to a bunch of people in shorts and flip flops downing beer.
Tyrannosaurus Hives was a landmark. Also, your spice of take may vary but I think the garage rock revival was better than the garage rock golden era. For example I'm the type of person who would take the White Stripes over, say, Sonic Youth. Also: the Hives, rock's Gorillaz?
