Not only do I disagree with the first hot take, I'd say video game OSTs are the biggest supplier of great orchestral and classical music in modern times.
Yeah I usually do not gatekeep but I think anyone who doesn’t see it that way genuinely has no idea what they are talking about. The Bloodborne soundtrack should have won a Grammy, and the nier automata and hollowknight soundtracks are some of the best music I’ve ever heard. I guess maybe someone who says that is someone who plays mainly the most mainstream of games, where their music isn’t as “memorable”, I have no doubt those soundtracks are great as well though.
While I dont mind orchestral and classic instruments being used, I wondered what about metal and rock? If you played, say Half Life 2, you would know the soundtracks also used metal and rock in them. Now we have almost every game using orchestra. I'm just asking why we need orchestra in everything in video game? Sure it helps players have a job, but I want to hear some good rock or metal tracks from video games.
Video game music is getting so much better, what the fuck? Where I previously didn't listen to any of it, games like DOOM, Mirror's Edge, Assassin's Creed, Red Dead Redemption, Deus Ex, Cuphead, Undertale/Deltarune, Battlefield (1 and V's are beautiful, shoutout Under The Flag) and so on are making me more and more interested in the genre.
Uncharted 3, Spider-man (2018), Zelda BOTW, God of War, Skyrim, and to cheat at little bit, Fifa 13-present I think the people who are saying this have no idea how great some of this generation's scores are.
Pictochat 2 from Smash Bros. My favourite stage in Ultimate is Pictochat BECAUSE of that song. Love its creativity and remixing of previous console noises (wii, dsi etc)
Undertale Bloodborne Nier: Automata God of War The Last of Us Red Dead 2 Persona 5 That's just a bunch of games that have great themes/soundtracks right off the top of my head. It's not like games in the past were any better either. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

"Video game music is getting worse" *Me, taking Hollow Knight, Nier: Automata, Ori and the Blind Forest, Dark Souls, Gris, Journey, God of War, Undertale etc etc etc by the hand:* "Come on kids. This neighbourhood isn't safe"
There are some exceptions, but I think there is weight to the idea that new video game music is generally worse than old video game music. Some of the examples you listed are indie games from small teams, and aren't indicative of all music in video games. Also Undertale is a particularly bad example of modern game OSTs being good since that game's music is intentionally similar to the music from the GBA/Snes soundchip. It's literally meant to sound like the music from retro video games. It even uses direct samples from Earthbound's soundtrack. Also God of War has generic orchestra and so does a ton of triple A releases now. You could replace the music in God of War with the music from Assasin's Creed or Uncharted and literally nothing would change. It's all just epic/grand/wilderness type orchestra tracks. Compare that to something like the OST of LoZ; Majora's Mask or something, and the difference is night and day. A game like Chrono Trigger absolutely bodies something like Horizon Zero Dawn in the music department. Part of this is selection bias, though. I am comparing the music from mediocre modern games to the music from the greatest retro games ever made, so obviously there also exists really bad OSTs from retro games as well. However, the primitive console soundchips at the time prevented composers from using high-quality studio orchestra, so they needed to rely on making memorable compositions with MIDI programming of individual samples. In addition to this limitation, retro games often had their entire soundtracks composed by a single person, while most modern soundtracks are composed by large teams of composers and sound engineers. Because of these circumstances, Retro games tended to have very recognizable music, even if the music wasn't always the best. Pretty much everyone can recognize a track composed by Koji Kondo or Akira Yamaoka, but can you honestly be able to tell a song composed by one of the many God of War composers? Better yet, can you even tell apart the music from Assassins' creed Odyssey and Assassins' creed Orgins even though they were made by different people? I'm not so sure you can...

Persona 5, The last of Us, Nier, Kingdom Hearts, Undertale, Cuphead, freaking Witcher 3.. fair to say modern video game music is either returning to it’s glory days or it has never stopped being great.
Kingdom Hearts 3's soundtrack was just reused songs from past games or slightly remixed battle themes, the only new music was for the Disney worlds and the opening and outro.

@@shrekisbae21 it doesn't matter if it's old it still counts look at halo or doom they're pretty old as well then why did he say "minecraft is old" It makes no absolutely no sense
Aside from the nostalgia factor that a lot of us gamers will cling to (old FF games, Mega Man games, Sonic games etc. will always be considered epic when it comes to VGM), video game soundtracks are better than they’ve ever been IMO. Octopath Traveler & Persona 5 for example have two of the greatest OSTs I’ve heard in my life. Then there’s God Of War, Hollow Knight and other games that have music that keeps you on edge while adding to the atmosphere.
Videogame music back in the day also did focus on mood building. It's that there are more games rightnow, that's all. There's really really REALLY good music in new/somewhat-new games! I disagree, Melon!
most of what you said was completely baseless. unlucky. having nier in the background after claiming games are just movies these days is an awful start as well. maybe start with hollow knight's ost
I get what you're trying to say, but I think you might be reading into things unnecessarily. I think he just picked an image of a video game character playing music, not making a comment on Nier specifically. And he was probably referring to a lot of triple A games, which I can understand that movie comparison more for. Considering specific exceptions were made for two well known indie games in this makes me think he would also acknowledge something like Hollowknight, Undertale, etc., but likely doesn't play many games. So I wouldn't say his impressions are completely baseless when interpreting what he says in that context. And even then, the ending lines seem to indicate he's not totally dismissing modern video game music, just contrasting it with the sort of creativity and iconic simplicity you saw in technologically constrained early years, mostly for the sake of acknowledging where that tweet is coming from (which is largely the premise of this show). I also know plenty of people who are into less mainstream movie stuff that would disagree with the other side of that original tweet, but a majority of people immediately equate movies with Hollywood and thus take less issue with that generalization. So in that regard, just mentally rephrase the tweet and discussion to be about "Hollywood/Triple-A Games" - and disregard the choice of Nier as a background as a likely unintended irony.
I really disagree with the video game soundtrack argument. The last decade has had some of the best video game soundtracks EVER, with Persona 5's acid jazz, Life is Strange and Last of Us with some acoustic master pieces and Nier Automata, with music that perfectly reflects the moments and atmosfere of the game. Is not just a movie-like piece of music, it really builds the atmosfere and enviroment of the whole thing!
I disagree with Life is Strange having a good ost. Especially when you compare it to Persona 5 or Nier Automata. Its a bit too 'Hipster' for my liking.
@@BLOODMIESTER It obviously comes down to taste, but I really liked it. The electronic ambiences were nicely experimental for a triple A game too. Not to mention the "hipster" vibe perfectly fits the main character.
@@SiamHossain7 The hell are you talking about? It's true that there isn't a lot of variety when it comes to Japanese music, especially in regards to basically anything anime, but NieR:Automata's soundtrack is pretty iconic to the series, and definitely a noteworthy exception among Japanese video games. If you're so sure it would sound exactly the same with any other composer, then how about this? Provide a list of other Japanese composers that have created soundtracks similar or identical to the types of tracks offered by NieR. Go ahead, I'll be waiting. The only one that comes to mind is Motoi Sakuraba's remix of Destroyed Skyworld in Smash Bros Wii U, which is *one* track that has a somewhat NieR-esque vibe. NieR, and NieR:Automata both display Keiichi Okabe's particular style very well, a style well-defined to the same extent as that of Yuki Kajiura's. People claiming video game music has gotten worse are just nostalgia blinded people clinging to the time when they were 11 years old. It also has a lot to do with technical limitations of music back then. The NES for example couldn't produce more than 4 sounds at a time (6 with specially made chips like the VRC-6 used in the Japanese version of Castlevania III) and because of that they had to have a strong focus on melody in order not to be grating as fuck. People cling to melody more than anything else so as games were able to strip the technical limitations and have bigger ideas than "just" melodies that stick in your head some people naturally think it got worse. A great example of what vidya music used to be like and what it can be now is comparing the original versions of Final Fantasy songs with their renditions in Final Fantasy XIV. Stuff like Dancing Mad or Terra's Theme were amazing when they were first written by Nobuo Uematsu but the FFXIV versions completely murders them and takes them several levels above that.
@@hotlanta35 I'm fairly certain I'm older than you. In fact, I actually lived in the 80s and saw all the stuff people are nostalgic for being released. In terms of video games there basically is no "before I was born" unless you count shit like Tennis for Two or other stuff built using old radar machines and those games weren't exactly known for their stellar soundtracks.
And then you have games like Hotline Miami which basically “revived” or brought more popularity/listeners to a genre that would have otherwise gone unnoticed and forgotten if the game was never released
Should have read the comments before I posted, you're completely right, I'd go as far to say hotline Miami was a huge reason synth wave blew up so much

Carson Julvezan i understand neirs music is fucking amazing but... dude your basing that on the game awards, the poor man hours long shitty advertisement
Disagree. There's a lot of fantastic video game soundtrack getting released each year. NieR: Automata is a great example. Not only that the soundtrack build up the atmosphere and tone of the game, they tell stories. Each character's theme song in Devil May Cry V tells the story of the character, using the music to represent the character's personality. Even the lyrics symbolize the characters' developments throughout the story. Monster Hunter series have memorable soundtracks that set up and gives the monsters identities. Other memorable soundtracks came out in recent years: -Bloodborne -Dark Souls series -Final Fantasy series -God of War -Legend of Zelda series -Octopath Traveler -Persona 5 -Resident Evil 2 Remake -Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice -Super Smash Brothers Ultimate -Transistor -Witcher 3 -many many more, the list goes on and on. Video games soundtrack is not there to only heighten the mood. In many games, the soundtrack has to sync up with the mechanic and act as a signal for the players to properly interact with the mechanics. Many action games have soundtrack that does this. Also, calling most recent video games as interactive cinema is just pure ignorance.
I disagree. Games like Nier Automata and the whole Final Fantasy 13 trilogy have shown that music has not been totally gone over the last 14ish years. I would argue its more east vs west where in eastern games music accompanies a scene where in western games its in the background of scenes. Both use liscensed music in their games at times which has a varying degree of effectiveness. Say what you want about Borderlands and the company who makes them, they do have entertaining intros with accompanying music. I think the real problems is music isn't a focus. Which fair enough it isn't always a focus but music or lack their of can make or break scenes in games. Fighting Anubis in ZOE2 is enhanced by the music, fighting a tv turned android disco machine in Undertale is enhanced dramatically by its music. A game's battle theme can change how much you want to fight. Persona 5 made you want fights to last longer because the music was excellent.
Whoever says videogames soundtracks are generic then you haven't heard the RDR 2 soundtrack, that shit make me cry, also the God of War soundtrack composed by the same guy from The Walking Dead, or the Spider-Man soundtrack make by the same guy who made the Daredevil theme song

He literally put Nier; Automata in the background and claimed that video game music lacks good compositional genius, even though Nier has some of the best composed songs in their OST. They even made their own language for the choral stuff and can been seen as a very good mix of classical romantic era music and today's modern music.
Video game music isn't getting worse, the whole, "It used to be better" attitude is just nostalgia speaking - you remember the good classics, but you played about a hundred games as a kid & you remember about ten of the good games & each of them had one or two tracks you liked. You remember FFX's "Hymn of the Faith" & "To Zanarkand" because they were good tracks, but you probably don't remember "This is the music that plays on path two of jungle area" & "This is the music that plays during an underwater battle on this island". Much in the same way you don't remember any song from Inspector Gadgets Crazy Maze, Shrek's Treasure Hunt & Hot Wheels Stunt Track Challenge - yes, those are all games that exist. It's just like when people grow up & they say, "My era of music was better than this", no, you've just filtered out all the shit & right now, you're dealing with good shit & bad shit. The 80s had some great shit & we still listen to it to this day, but it had bad shit & we left it there, now no one remembers it. No one remembers bad soundtracks from 90s games - it's as dead as they are. In the past couple years I've been really impressed with a lot of video game soundtracks, notably games like Hollow Knight, Nier Automata & Persona 5. Likewise, there'll be a tonne of forgettable soundtracks & bad ones, they'll be lost to the winds of time & in 20 years people will say, "Remember Nier Automata's soundtrack? The 10s had the best video game soundtracks". As for mood, all music is there to heighten mood, whether action packed, ambient, sombre, etc. think about Digimon World for the PS1 - used a bunch of short, simple loops for the music in each area & flipped them for night & day time. A small change of instruments or pace was there to heighten the mood - but you wouldn't compare that to like an Uncharted soundtrack, but they fill the same roles.
That first one is so fucking blinded by nostalgia it hurts. NieR Automata and Replicant. Super Mario Odyssey. Undertale. Iconoclasts. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Team Fortress 2. Bloodborne. Demon’s Souls(remake AND original). Drakengard 3. I can keep going.

Aside from the nostalgia factor that a lot of us gamers will cling to (old FF games, Mega Man games, Sonic games etc. will always be considered epic when it comes to VGM), video game soundtracks are better than they’ve ever been IMO. Octopath Traveler & Persona 5 for example have two of the greatest OSTs I’ve heard in my life. most of what you said was completely baseless. unlucky. having nier in the background after claiming games are just movies these days is an awful start as well.
maybe start with hollow knight's ost
haha yeah i felt this as well, how can you put NieR in the background and then claim modern vg osts are lackluster?
Seriously, NieR is one of the best example when it comes to "Video game narratives as video games" and not "Video game narratives as movies".
It was the fucking editor, blame him not Anthony
I really disagree with the video game soundtrack argument. The last decade has had some of the best video game soundtracks EVER, with Persona 5's acid jazz, Life is Strange and Last of Us with some acoustic master pieces and Nier Automata, with music that perfectly reflects the moments and atmosfere of the game. Is not just a movie-like piece of music, it really builds the atmosfere and enviroment of the whole thing!
every time people compare new x vs old x they make the mistake of comparing only the good old x vs all of the new x
I disagree with Life is Strange having a good ost. Especially when you compare it to Persona 5 or Nier Automata. Its a bit too 'Hipster' for my liking.

The hell are you talking about?

Putting "there are exceptions" means nothing in your sentence. It just adds a fake safety net for you to fall back on incase your intention was proven wrong.
He literally put Nier; Automata in the background and claimed that video game music lacks good compositional genius, even though Nier has some of the best composed songs in their OST. They even made their own language for the choral stuff and can been seen as a very good mix of classical romantic era music and today's modern music.
Nier's soundtrack is literally incredible. Best music I've heard from a game

@@Roi985 yeah, didn't mean to say that, I really like Undertale, and the music is amazing
Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3's music as well
Those games are all at least 3 years old
that was some pleb videogame music talk from both whang and anthony. you're either not playing enough games or not paying attention to the good stuff. id rather listen to game osts than regular music any day. doesn't matter if it's old or new.
One question. Why? I understand when you want to do something and not focus on what you're listening to, but why any day? Music is it's own thing. Soundtracks exist to compliment something.
@@ididgt4259 yeah I agree with you. I never understood why 0eople would listen to OSTs on their own.
@@ididgt4259 Because mainstream video game soundtracks consistently outperform mainstream standalone songs.
Same with film music.
@@aR0ttenBANANA Listen to anything from the persona series or nier and come back after you've changed your mind. There's also fighting game soundtracks and many more dont just limit thousands of video game OSTs to "mood setting"
@@ididgt4259 The Transistor soundtrack is good with or without the game, it's just better with it. I'd rather listen to it than a lot of mainstream music. Would I choose it over any music? Nah, there's some great stuff out there. But some OSTs are just pretty good even as a standalone piece, and if you played/watched what it's from, it can evoke those feelings from when you watched it again. It's a nice feeling.
Witcher 3 soundtrack is incredible. I will never forget it.
The scores of some video games today rival and sometimes eclipse some of the best movies today.
Such a dumb take
Movie scores nowadays mostly revolve around couple or several themes, while video game composers must apply more variety due to much greater length of the soundtrack.
Mass Effect and Bioshock: Infinite are two soundtracks from last gen than absolutely stand out to me as examples of memorable video game music. Especially Mass Effect. Every time I hear the Galaxy Map music, I'm instantly taken back to the Normandy and all of my friends. And B:I's pop music covers are some of my favorites of the last decade, like the barbershop quartet version of "God Only Knows." Good stuff. I wish I had more current examples but I am so far behind this gen.
the suicide mission theme is honestly fucking amazing, and the fact that the leaving earth track has been used in tv shows like top gear & daredevil says a lot too
@@1121b I had no idea ME themes had been on TV! Guess I'm behind on that, too. I'm going to look that up. LOVE the Suicide Mission theme.
Shame no one is mentioning the Yakuza series as one with a great soundtrack. Yakuza 0 made me start actually paying attention to sound in video games.
When it comes to things Fantano has said about anything ever, this is his hottest take
Persona 5? Mario Odyssey? God of War? Red Dead 2?
Persona 5 is great, Odyssey is pretty good, god of war is alright and red dead 2 is excruciatingly underwhelming
Zelda botw, Warframe, Smash Ultimate?
@@advertisedmanpower7155 I like the rdr2 soundtrack, but I can't hum any of the tracks in that game. They were all forgettable.
Being respectful here.GoW sounded generic and Zelda Botw seemed to have very little music other than background music.Red Dead 2 yes I agree with that one...best game I played in years.
Nier Automata has one of the best video game soundtracks of all time
Warframe
Darksiders 2
Witcher 3
Hyper Light Drifter
DOOM
Dying Light
Dark Souls 3 soundtrack is a 10/10 in my opinion. Beautiful.
GameJunkyard Metro: Last Light has a great soundtrack but I feel like a lot of people don’t know that.
@@milestiller665 I know. The train chase theme is my favourite.
GameJunkyard True. Also the main theme in piano is really great. and there’s 4 really great metal bonus tracks that fit thematically with the game. Super cool stuff.
@@milestiller665 I'll check them out.
Go listen to Hyper Light Drifter, Oxenfree, Transistor, The Banner Saga, UNRAVEL(!!!) It's absolutely mesmerising and beautiful. I think it's quite the opposite, the more great story/narrative focused indie games come out, the better the music gets, and not only indie, the AAA stuff got pretty extraordinary too. I was never a big fan of Assassin's Creed music, but bold experimentations in Origins really hooked me, and the list goes on and on. Actually, recently I listen to more game music than almost any other genre. In my opinion this industry grew enourmusly lately.
Hyper light drifter ost is great. Octopath traveler too
The Banner Saga score owns bones
You listed some great example there. I could give you so many more too. There's so much good music from just the last few years. I think the problem is there's so many games now that it's hard to find the good stuff. Oh and the fact a lot of big AAA games have generic sounding scores.
Uhm, Hollow Knight, Celeste, The Messenger, etc... there so many amazing game ost (lovingly pressed by ghost ramp too)
Left 4 Dead 2?
the messenger's final boss theme fucking slaps
Miles LeBlanc it’s like 10 years old, but yeah it’s solid.
Also, HOW are we forgetting Gustavo Santaolalla’s STELLAR ost for The Last of Us (he also did the score for Babel which is one of my favorite movies). Furthermore, Johnny Greenwood’s many scores such as There Will Be Blood!
Plus, Jose Gonzalez made the greatest original song for a game when he made Far Away for Red Dead Redemption.
Minecraft music is the thing you never expected that one day it would make you so emotional. It was just there.
I cannot get over the fact that you're sitting in this video.
You know what’s not dying
The persona 5 OST
I think you should give it a listen melon
i love that you answer your title questions first, people who wanted to know the answer get what they expect and after that it's all a bonus and if you're interested you feel free to keep watching, not many youtubers would do the same i believe
Have these fools even heard the Castlevania remixes from Smash Ultimate
@Tiztu they're completely remixed and often make adjustments to the song's core structures. they're by definition new video game songs
I believe Doom has one if not the best but damn near close best soundtracks within the last 10 year's along with Minecraft.
Momo Bobo what about Witcher 3 and red dead redemption 2
Hollow knight is great too
Team fortress 2
Anyone who thinks video game soundtracks aren't good anymore hasn't heard Disasterpeace. Hyper Light Drifter and Fez are fantastic soundtracks. He also did the soundtrack for It Follows.
The Kirby series also has a surprisingly great soundtrack. especially 64 and star allies
Yoko Shimomura still the Hans Zimmer of video games imo
-2 prescription is so weak anothony. Get on my -6 level
Honestly, I unironically like the sound of "Chocolate Rain". That frantic, dramatic, unnerving keyboard riff has embedded itself inside my friggin' brain.
CHOCOLATE RAIN!
Persona 5, NieR: Automata, Super Mario Odyssey, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Deltarune, Cuphead, Celeste and A Hat In Time are all examples within the past 2 years of outstanding videogame music
The minecraft music never fails to make me feel incredibly lonely and a little scared and anxious. Powerful stuff.

God, Whang's opinion on modern soundtracks is a carbon copy equivalent to having people experiencing these soundtracks for the first time and making them feel like "they're born in the wrong generation" and I'm sure everyone knows why that phrase is annoying.
Laziness in understanding change in a rapidly evolving medium that are video games, ignorance in the effort of soundtracks that try their absolute best to connect their soundtracks to the games thematically and symbolically such as in Persona and ESPECIALLY NieR. And the lack of knowledge that chiptune is in fact a genre, not a thing of the past. Listen to "Rolling down the Street, In My Katamari" and "Surfing on a Sine Wave" by FearofDark. It's gonna blow your mind.
