Best part of every breakdown is the pitcher overlay. I know it is a bit of work to get right, but keep doing it. They are fantastic, and showcase just how hard it is to hit in the MLB.
That overlay is the most useful visualization of a pitcher’s arsenal I’ve seen. Especially in this case, where you really show exactly why the change has been effective. If someone wants to talk tome about Heaney, I’ll ask them if they’ve seen this video first.
@@adamjenkins190 it really shows how cool this sport is. In a split second the best of hitters evaluate how the pitch is going out, the slight movement it is making and of it is worth it to swing. I know a lot of people who disrespect baseball for being boring or whatever else. However, it is probably one of the most technical sports out there. So many intricacies, from the analytics in the office to the adjustments on the field. It is more like chess than most other sports.
If watching this breakdown makes you think that, if you ever get the chance to go to a MLB game and sit directly behind the plate. You'll be amazed that the hitters even see the ball, let alone hit it.
One of the best breakdowns in awhile. The highlight was a bunted triple, super cool. Along with the pitch overlays and pitch breakdowns at the end, 9/10 why a non baseball watcher enjoys this channel
"If you're new to baseball...." this is why I love Jomboy, I am learning so much from these breakdowns. Entertaining sure. Funny, of course. But most importantly these breakdowns are teaching tools for baseball. And I love 'em.
Goddamn Jomboy, you are a treasure. I'm a big baseball fan, I know how all this works, but actually getting to see it laid out like that and knowing that you're introducing and informing new fans... We don't deserve you man.
Absolutely LOVE the breakdown-within-the-breakdown breakdown at the end. As a Dodger fan I know our pitching staff works magic on throwaways and finally getting a real glimpse into that just makes it that much more enjoyable throughout the season.
This is by far one of the best breakdowns. I haven't seen anyone else doing similar analysis on the pitch change. This is why you never stops being a student of baseball! Great stuff!!
Love this depiction of how the interplay of pitches is sometimes more powerful than the variety. Fastball and slider look identical until half way to the plate, and by then it's too late for the hitter to decide what it is. Brilliant stuff.
Pitch breakdown was legit. Love the explanation and the common sense approach to addressing how his pitch release makes such a huge difference. The fact that the pitches look the same for so long even as the ball goes to the plate... wild.
The actual thing in the title of video was only till minute three, was almost tempted to leave once I'd seen but I'm glad I stayed that was an incredible breakdown. You guys keep crushing it.
Great vid on pitch breakdown. Heard Slider for so long and didn't know the pitch. Learned Tunneling too. Just really great to be educated. Thank you. much.
Damn Jimmy, as a Dodger fan I almost skipped this breakdown having watched the bunt turned triple live. The 7 minute length made wonder what you could be breaking down on a play you’d usually do in about 2 minutes. I’m so glad I watched. I think you’re gonna have to put together a separate breakdown series on pitching. The actual focus of the video, why Heaney is suddenly a completely different pitcher, was gold. It is, reduced to the essence, simply the ability for a hitter to identify his curveball on release vs his slider. Even for longtime baseball fans, even knowing he’s changed his primary pitch, that’s really great stuff. I didn’t tie it to the batter’s ability to recognize what was thrown. Great insight!
I must say that I have never watched a full baseball game. And don’t really even enjoy baseball that much. But I watch every single one of your breakdowns. They are just absolutely incredible.
That was a bit of a wild game. Other than the unnecessary fielding error here, the Mets got a couple of homers off of Heaney. Someone must've told him, "Don't get mad, get strikeouts" because that's what he did that game. The Mets made the Dodgers fight to keep that go-ahead run in the 7th.
All three games were pretty nuts, but you gotta figure games between the two best teams in the NL are going to be nail-biters. I assume at some point they'll meet in the postseason.
i quite literally only watch and follow baseball thru your videos and im not even that die hard of a fan just goes to show how 1) entertaining 2) knowledgeable you are to keep me coming back!!!!
Awesome breakdown, wouldn’t have noticed that but damn, when you have a fraction of a second to notice this stuff and it’s coming at you at 80+mph , I have no clue how these players can do it.
Great video as always. We need more of this type of analysis during broadcasts! Let’s be honest, baseball is boring af if you don’t understand the game within the game, that’s what we all love about baseball. It seems like too many broadcasts are trying to avoid scaring off newer fans by “keeping things simple” but it’s just boring. This is what will get more people into baseball
Exactly! As someone who is new to baseball understanding pitch type, pitch framing, defensive cut-offs and other measures is what makes the game fascinating.
Freddie always does that to Nimmo when Nimmo gets to 1st, now it's like a cute little thing between the two of them. Can't remember the 1st time Freddie did it, but it's been a couple years.
As a longtime Angels' fan, Heaney's ability to be so good and so bad at the same time always mystified me. He's clearly a talented guy and hate to see him go but it just seemed like he was never going to figure everything out. Glad someone did though and he's turned it around. That split between the fastball and curve was so obvious he might as well have been tipping his pitches. Fantastic breakdown
As much as I enjoyed the breakdown, I kept getting more upset with the Angels the longer it went. This goes a long way to explaining why we haven't developed good pitching (with maybe just a couple exceptions) in years. Clearly someone from the Yankees did this same type of analysis Jomboy does here, and now the Dodgers (of all teams) are reaping the benefits. Frustrating.
lOVED THIS breakdown. You literally are the best! I had no clue you could make a slider and a curve come out your hand the same way but break differently at the sametime. That is really reallly cool
