Best part of every breakdown is the pitcher overlay. I know it is a bit of work to get right, but keep doing it. They are fantastic, and showcase just how hard it is to hit in the MLB.

That overlay is the most useful visualization of a pitcher’s arsenal I’ve seen. Especially in this case, where you really show exactly why the change has been effective. If someone wants to talk tome about Heaney, I’ll ask them if they’ve seen this video first.

@@adamjenkins190 it really shows how cool this sport is. In a split second the best of hitters evaluate how the pitch is going out, the slight movement it is making and of it is worth it to swing. I know a lot of people who disrespect baseball for being boring or whatever else. However, it is probably one of the most technical sports out there. So many intricacies, from the analytics in the office to the adjustments on the field. It is more like chess than most other sports.

He's clearly a talented guy and hate to see him go but it just seemed like he was never going to figure everything out. Glad someone did though and he's turned it around. Damn Jimmy, as a Dodger fan I almost skipped this breakdown having watched the bunt turned triple live. The 7 minute length made wonder what you could be breaking down on a play you’d usually do in about 2 minutes. I’m so glad I watched.
I think you’re gonna have to put together a separate breakdown series on pitching. The actual focus of the video, why Heaney is suddenly a completely different pitcher, was gold. It is, reduced to the essence, simply the ability for a hitter to identify his curveball on release vs his slider. Even for longtime baseball fans, even knowing he’s changed his primary pitch, that’s really great stuff. I didn’t tie it to the batter’s ability to recognize what was thrown. Great insight!

Jomboy used a curveball/fastball combo that hit the catcher at the same spot. Then used a slider/fastball combo that hit the catcher about 2 feet apart. Good video, but I wonder what the slider/fastball would have looked like out of the hand when the pitch hits the same spot, like the video he was comparing it to. 🤔

Thank you so much for showing the shift of the strike zone. I think there's lots of times when that doesn't happen and the booth guys make calls about whether the "EQC tracer" (I assume that's a local sponsor for Mariner's broadcasts) shows it a strike or not.

I've really enjoyed watching the work you've put in pay off! From some really basic editing & commentary getting a couple thousand views if it was a real high profile play or team to an amazingly edited breakdown of pitch physics which will no doubt be cited by any number of established "official" media. When your breakdown of the Astr*'s went national I was every bit as happy for you as anyone. You've done more to promote MLB than MLB seems to be doing themselves...the players definitely know and acknowledge it, it would be nice if MLB did as well. THIS is the exact type of content a "modern" audience requires to develop interest

Mr. O'Brien, you are the best thing in baseball. You are better than the game. MLB is so bad, I almost can't watch the highlight channels. I'm spending my evenings watching 1980 games. Nolan Ryan, artificial turf fields like parking lots covered in green carpets. Seriously. What's happened to the game, guys??

I’ve noticed that you generally (& generally is code for always) say , for example in this clip, “maybe that ball would have WENT foul”. Please do yourself a favor and say GONE , I noticed a lot of people are saying “went”when they should say gone. I’m only say this to you because I’m a baseball guy and I happen to dig you. Make an adjustment to restore some equity and set yourself apart from the average wind bag with a WiFi connection and a microphone Thx

Thank you so much. I've always been told, "It's a fast curveball." Which I understood, but now I truly understand by seeing the same pitcher throw it. Reminds me of Jonny Bench with the Chicken on Saturday afternoons.

Yeah, sure, statgeeks, keep on telling the gullible fans and ignorant baseball "minds" that sacrifice bunts are "a waste of an out." Guess what: Doubleplays are worse. So often, when a bunt-capable player lays one down, the battery or corner infielders butcher the ball, and/or fire it into the outfield. The poindexters oughtta watch a game sometime. I know they never played. By the way, Mark Prior might be today's guru to the southpaw, having turned around enigmas like Heaney and Tyler Anderson. Kinda makes one dread the eternity that Rick Honeycutt spent with the team.

In little league I gave up a bunt grand slam. I just stood on the mound and watched as my teammates continued to throw the ball away/ drop it all the way around the bases. The kid who 'hit' it had the nerve to celebrate. I was on the Giants we were playing the White Sox. I remember it vividly. It happened in 1994. Worst part is it wasn't even an intentional bunt. The kid swung normally.
It went from catcher > 1st base (dropped, oh and there were 2 outs)
1st baseman picked it up and threw it into left/center field
CF picked it up and threw it to the fence beyond the 3rd baseman
the 3rd baseman picked it up and threw it well over the catchers head while the hitter was celebrating and going back into dugout.
I did a full 360 on the mound watching as this unfolded while yelling to throw it home or just give me the fing ball. They did neither. 😂

Jomboy Media, could I recommend that you do a breakdown of the Orioles game tying homerun by Stowers? 0-2 2 outs bottom 9th down by 1, first homerun of his career and was preceded by a foul ball error to drop the game? Bro its perfect (coming from and Orioles fan, but still).

  • @prizmic3448
    @prizmic3448 3 месяца назад

This is a year old but the pitch overlay isn't accurate, because the Curve/FB overlay shows both pitches ending up in the same spot, while the Slider/FB overlay shows them ending in different spots. You'd be aiming high and out to a righty to land the curveball in the zone where that fastball ends up, which is why it seems to jump out of his hand comparatively, meanwhile the slider ends up at the guy's knees while the fastball ends up at the catcher's mask because that's what would happen if he throws that slider at that same spot. I do agree that his slider is really effective mostly because of how good the movement is with that sort of velo.
