How to make DIY Ollas: Self-Watering Systems for Plants

  • Two simple ways to make your own ollas. These traditional self-watering vessels are low-tech, easy to DIY, and will help keep plants watered in the driest conditions. The way it works is that you bury the pots into the ground near plants that need regular watering. Top up the water in the vessel rather than the soil around the plant. Moisture seeps through the terracotta, and eventually, the plant's roots will grow right up to the pot. They'll suck moisture directly from it.
    The first way to make an Olla takes only a few minutes, and the second more permanent DIY takes a day. You can also use a cork to fill the hole, as you can see in my olla update video for using these self-watering pots outside in the garden: • Ollas for Healthy Seed...

    What a great idea!!! Never would’ve thought of it… I live in Mexico, ollas are very cheap around here, and they come with holes sealed, even more handy!! I will definitely try it!!

    With masonry, it's good to wet down the surface where new mortar is applied, so that moisture doesn't wick out of curing cement too quickly. That can reduce the finished seal and durability of the cement. So perhaps a good additional step...to wet down the Terra-Cotta pots before adding the cement. ....another great video!

    I found you in an interesting way, and I’m happy I did! I do the NYT crossword puzzle (app) and a clue was “ollas” so I googled it. I thought it was a cooking pot. When I saw that it’s also something used for watering gardens, I had to check that out, being a gardener. Google had a lot listed, including your video. So I watched it. And I’m so glad I did! I had heard of ollas, not knowing what they were called (or how to pronounce it) and really never knew how they worked. I now realize that ollas let water seep out, and the plant roots grow toward the pot to use the water. It makes sense. I don’t use terra cotta pots for container gardening for this very reason. The unglazed pots let the water seep out of the soil, and the plants in them need to be watered more often. So I learned so much from your video and reading all 579 of the comments! (You have such nice, informative comments. I read them all, since I wasn’t sleeping anyway!) To conclude my “book,” I want to thank you for this great DIY method to help water your garden, which importantly saves water! I am a new subscriber and will watch your follow-up videos. Now back to my crossword puzzle!

    Of you want, you can also add a cute little garden creature or so on the olla "lid" and it can look like purposely placed decor

  • @tak0kitteh
    @tak0kitteh 10 месяцев назад +4

    if you're using the base as a lid, flip it the other way around so that you can fill that with water & sand, and your olla doubles as a butterfly puddler!

    If anybody is concerned that the material used to seal the hole in the bottom of the pot is toxic, they sell food grade silicone caulking and the aquarium supply sells sealants that you can use like caulking and is non-toxic. They use that to make aquariums.

      Sweetearth1958 sand in bottom without covering the hole with anything else will work a bit better for water loving plants, even good for most plants. Old timers would bury a jug with holes punched in it, they also used coffee cans but that was when toxicity wasn’t as much of a concern. 😁

      Daniel D Sizemore growing up we planted milk jugs in between the tomatoes with just 1 hole on each side at close to bottom of plants. Encourages plant roots to grow waaaaaayyyy down. It worked awesome. Daddy quit growing them that way once I went to college. He didn’t have to dig all those holes for the gallon jugs, ha.

Naturally, my solution was massively overcomplicated and quite flawed. This video brought Me back down to earth and will be doing permanent ollas via your method in the next few weeks. I may still try to add a simpler version of my design auto-filling system as I have a 50 US gallon rainwater butt right next to the greenhouse. Thanks!

    I have a system of these connected by tubing to water containers for my garden here in the south of Spain. The system works really well, all I have to do is open a tap for a couple of minutes per day to top up the ollas and, of course, refill the water containers. Saves me a load of work and keeps weeds to a minimum, both of which I really appreciate as I have a chest problem.

      Im a Kiwi and live in Australia but my wife is from Almeria in the south of Spain. When I visited there I was amazed as we flew in to the airport seeing all the commercial growing houses. So where you live must be a great place to grow things. The climate is very similar to south Queensland where I live here. These Ollas look like a great idea. All the best, kind regards Paul.

I live on the Gold Coast of Australia where it is both very hot and my water rates bill is more than my electricity bill so water conservation is paramount. Anyway like you after a little online pricing of ollas which I would need a lot of, I also thought, I wonder if the terracotta pot idea would work. Then I saw that you have done it already and so this was very helpful thank you. We can buy these for just a few dollars and maybe the same for the tray from our local mega garden and hardware store. Thanks again. I hope you holiday went well. Kind regards Paul. happy gardening.
