  • This video shows you how to make a pair of VERY simple DIY mud pattens out of mud shoes (much like homemade snow shoes) for walking in tidal flats, through swamps while exploring land, or for mudlarking in general (while perhaps looking for antique or vintage bottles, artifacts, or whatever treasure). All you need for this project is a drill, saw, a few lengths of rope, and some scrap wood (plywood is easiest, but planks will work as well).

These were in common use in the south of England by duck hunters and mudlarkers on the banks of the Thames in London.
The front holes should sit alongside the widest part of your foot, the rear holes at the centre of your heels.
The heel rope starts BEHIND the D loop and tucks in from the outside inwards and not from the inside out - that way it wraps around the D rope. Tie it TIGHT.
On the underside you need to fix three wooden battens in an H shape but leave a gap between the uprights and the cross bar so it doesn't clog with mud - these will help break the suction when you try and shift your feet. The uprights align with the length of the patterns not across them.
Lastly try them out in mud that isn't too deep!
    Happy mudlarking!

Why not wear them to the supermarket just to confuse the other shoppers?

As long as the mud isn't too soupy, many of these shoes still work..... but work MUCH better with smaller people.....
