  • I hope you’ll enjoy this new arrangement of the extremely popular “The Prince of Denmark’s March” (most often known as “Trumpet Voluntary.” This is the first of a collection of pieces I’ll be rolling out over the next year-the “CEREMONIAL MUSIC ALBUM.” These pieces are aimed at providing very playable and musical settings of standard brass quintet music used in weddings, graduations, and other ceremonial events. They have a few important characteristics:
    1) They are playable by intermediate-level musicians, and even reasonably sight-readable by professionals.
    2) They are musically interesting, voiced well, and sound full and resonant.
    3) They are in related keys, so transitions between them will be seamless.
    4) They include optional timpani, when available to add even more pomp to the music.
    5) They include optional keyboard parts, which are also quite playable. When this is included, the brass musicians my omit certain passages affording them a bit more rest.
Thanks to my colleagues for their excellent playing, and to DF Music, Inc. and John Packer Musical Instruments for their support.

I want to give a special shoutout regarding the instrument I am playing in the video: the JP Smith-Watkins Bb Trumpet (Bb Trumpet: JP251SW). This is an “intermediate level” trumpet that plays as well as most professional line instruments, for a much nicer price.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to perform brass quintet, trombone choir, and brass choir music in some of Chicago's most flattering venues for such groups. THIS audio sounds like it was recorded live in such a place! I especially like how the trombone sounds. Naturally it starts with the players doing their job well. Yet I see no evidence in the video that you all played this in the same room at the same time. But whether you did or did not, I'm here to give a huge shout out to the person(s) responsible for mixing, balancing, engineering...doing whatever it was you did to make this sound so good.

Thank you, Scott. I’m flattered at this. Nice to hear that these are sounding like they are in a real space. I was a total “newb” at all this just year ago (not the trumpet, but at this sort of “a la carte” recording), so it’s been a learning curve. In addition to of course showcasing the arrangements and hopefully some good playing, I am glad you (and hopefully many others) are enjoying the music, I figure that’s what I was put on earth to do. Thanks again!

Oh, and I would be remiss not to mention Dmitry, who does a lot of this work, and who has been great teacher for me.
