How To Replace A Mass Air Flow Sensor On A 1996-1998 Chevy/GMC C/K1500

- I installed a new Mass Air Flow Sensor on my 1998 Silverado. The Truck was acting sluggish under load and if your truck is doing the same then you too can check to see if the MAF is bad on your truck or car for that matter. Very easy project. Will more than likely take you anywhere from 15-20 mins to complete. I will say, sometimes you can clean these sensors, but mine was cleaned several times prior and I can only assume had a malfunction at some point.

You did an excellent vedio by the way!!! I have a K1500 Chevy now a GMT400. The tranny ocasionaly goes in & out of gears. I did your MAF test & found mine is bad also. I will be replacing it as soon as I can get a replacement for it. Thank for doing the vedio,it is very helpful.
Glad I could help!
I have had a rough idle while in gear (auto) for months, 2000 Cadillac Escalade, did wires plugs almost was going to replace the fuel injectors...your video and a quick run to Auto Zone 5 minutes to replace...254,000 miles...purrs like a kitty...thanks
No problem! Glad I could help! Also good know know it works on 2000 models as well.
@@bossadamsgarage the issue has come back?? it runs fine when cold but as it warms up the misfire returns..it is idling in gear at around 750rpm which is lower that before l replaced the mass airflow sensor...maybe a high resistance plug wire?
Me replacing the MAS corrected my issue. Your problem could still be a plug and wire issue or maybe a crank position sensor issue.
Same truck bro thank you you made the best video concerning this
Glad I could help!
My wife took that part off and replaced it on her truck and only took the two clamps on each side of the air sensor off. Now it runs great.
Thanks for video fixed my problem. Had my first to gears like sputter back fire
Glad I could help!
Very well made and informative video ! Thanks pal .
I appreciate it!
Nice Tahoe I have the same color GMC Yukon!!!💯
It's a hell of a lot easier to remove the air box cover and filter. Then remove the hose from the Throttle body cover and take the whole assembly to your bench to install the new MAF sensor rather than struggle with it the way you're doing it!
Awesome video fixed it for me thank you so much!
Glad I could help!
Thank you bro I got a 96 burban but same motor it stalls once it gets 2 miles from running an itll start once I let it cool down
Glad I could help!
Thank you so much man!
Glad I could help!
Good video. I saw the mass flow sensor from $34.00 to 125.00 what is the difference?
More than likely nothing and it's probably just the brand. With that, everyone has a favorite brand; so I would just go with which brand you prefer or the one that has be best reviews.
thank you for the great video what kind of muffler do have on your truck. I just bought a 1997 same color with the factory muffler your truck sounds really good.
I appreciate it! I put a 40 series flowmaster on it, but I changed it up a little bit and did custom turndowns after the rear axle so that it gave it more of a muscle car sound. ruclips.net/video/0Zy_sEMKLhs/видео.html
Also of note is you can have a bad mass air flow that causes your engine to die immediately after start. If you disconnect your MAS sensor you car should go into a closed loop limp mode.
So mine starts after a few rough try’s. I just changed fuel filter still same issue will start after few try’s and lags when pushing the peddle while in park sometimes sputters after stoping and trying to take off is that still the mass air flow??
True. He's confusing it with the MAP sensor
I unplugged mine and it started running better
Changed the old mass flow air sensor. Plugged the new one in and it’s still running bad after the new one is hooked up
@@jamesloe9374did you ever get it figured out? I’m having the same issues
Do you think I need to check my electrical lines
You do know that Chevy added a safety feature that is your mas goes out it won't effect the run ability to bad
When
Run ability? I disagree. So is that why these trucks backfire n drink gas like nothing n throws more than just the mass air flow code?
I mean yeah u can still drive them but u go through more gas ur engine works twice as hard. In my opinion the mass air flow sensor was bad from the start. I'm not just saying this bout GM vehicles but other brands are just as guilty
mine wont cut off and its new what should it do??
If you disconnected the negative terminal on the battery before install and reconnected the negative when you were finished, you'll have to do a little more trouble shooting because unfortunately, these trucks are imfamous for little issues popping up everywhere depending on the age.
sO yOur engine light never came on tHE whole time yOu had that problem??
I have to really check mine because i just cleaned it with the spray cleaner but never just unplugged it while it was running
Yep! Never had any indicator lights.
@@bossadamsgarage
I disconnected tHE plug & mY truck was still running🤬🤬Dang, sO I need a new one now.. thanks for tHE help..
I replaced my old one and it didn’t turn off so I changed it with a new one and it sorta worked then test drove it. Next day I turn it on it starts the same issue as before so I take off the sensor hoping it turns off, next thing you know it doesn’t!
Any ideas on why it did that
That is very interesting. What sort of issue does it have? I could be that it's not your maf and that it could be something else effecting it.
Disconnecting the MAF sensor will not shut ur vehicle. It goes into Limp mode. Ur MAP sensor will shut it off if disconnected
How long did you go without replacing the part but kept driving the truck?
I went a pretty good while to be honest. Then it got noticeably rougher and that's when I decided to swap it out.
Would anyone know if the plug that connects to the Maf sensor is the same as newer models like 2015?
I replaced this and the purge valve and now my truck has no torque…
Sounds like you got another issue going on. I am not sure what would cause it to lose torque though.
Did your truck use a lot of gas ⛽️ and run rough while idling
It was burning a little bit more than usual but not much. The idle was the give away when I would crank up my truck.
I have the same problem. It idle very rough while I’m in drive but stopped on a reg light or stop sign . Rpms go up and down almost sounds like it’s cammed but it isn’t . Truck sometimes die if I don’t accelerate a little while I’m stopped .
Hey I put a branf new mass air flow sensor in and I pulled the plug and the truck did not idle
So before you go tracing the electrical lines, after you install that new mass airflow sensor, make sure you disconnect the negative on the battery. Wait a few minutes, make sure everything is plugged in and adjusted like it should be and then connect the negative back. At that point you'll know whether you either got a bad (new) mass airflow or something electrical could be messed up.
@@bossadamsgarage i tested mine by pulling the connector..enging continued to run (Rough) put in new sensor and engine shut right off (like your video) so figured all was well.
Wht if the wiring is faulty?
Then you'll need to trace the harness. That's a job I wouldn't wish on anyone lol
Nice looking truck what's her name
Mamalona
I named mine bitch.
My 97 wouldn't start until I unplugged that air flow sensor
Sounds like it's time to replace that one!
@@bossadamsgarage not necessarily. I replaced mine and it runs worst than when it's disconnected
@@ismaelcarrillo3956 I have a 97 and it’s doing the same thing figured anything put
@@ismaelcarrillo3956 check your IAT sensor, right next to it. The smaller one. Cheaper and usually the fix to this issue.
@@eased4183my 97 in my pfp has had same issue for over 2 years.. I’ve checked all over replaced MAF multiple times IAT sensor as well and still I have to leave the MAF unplugged because the truck just runs better without it. Scanner shows codes for MAF and then I have a persisting o2 sensor code due to how my exhaust is.. maybe that’s something to do with it. But I’ve been stumped for a while, and ever since the code first came up my trucks just been in limp mode basically
Not 88-98....96 and forward....TBI motors dont have the vortec....
Not true. The Vortec engine line began in 1986... In 1996 they started supporting the name branding. But yes, that style of MAF began in 1996.
I’m having a crank but no start issue with my 1996 5.7L Silverado. The only code I’m getting is P0102 (Mass Air Flow circuit voltage low). I’ve tried unplugging the connector, but it still won’t start. Do you think my issue could actually be a faulty MAF sensor? I clear the code, but it comes right back when I crank the engine over.
