Thanks for the video. You are lucky to have such a great father. His explanation, answers a question I have had for quite awhile. A lot of people read into things, nefarious meanings, that have no basis in reality. The interview was very informative. I wish to thank your father for serving, and for all the sacrifices he has made for his country, and it's people.
It's called a reverse field flag! It go's back when the flag was carried in to combat, and when it flow the stars were seen first thing seen and it signifies to keep moving forward.
Why are many soldiers wearing this Backwards Flag on The Front of their Uniforms, or Equipment or their Hats ? It's just Backwards then; Backwards is the New Normal ! If they want it to be Windblown and Icongraphically Correct, Wear them on Their Right Arm, instead of Exclusively on their Left Arm ! ( ? ) !!!
This seems to me to be an accurate account of history, well told and now documented on video. It took strength for you to get through those memories to share this story and I salute you and your courage and honesty and greatly appreciate your service.Best to you sir
I feel so blessed to have found this video of your father. I am getting a large tattoo on my right arm today of the American Flag waiving and, being its permanent, I want it to be displayed properly. This video has helped me conclude my decision to place the honor forward - thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for interviewing a great man and hero. And I think he was in the right spot talking to the right person at the time. The commander may have gotten it done. But it would have never happened if it wasn't pointed out, and the reasoning why. And it shows the strength and courage of our soldiers that they do not run away from a fight, they run towards it. What an amazing interview. Thank you and thank you to all our heroes.
Although I am not a Veteran, the Majority of my family has served our country! Our Grandfather in the Spanish American War, our Father in World War 1, all five of my Brothers served, three in the Army and two in the Airforce. As a child I was so Proud of my Brothers! I loved it when they came home in their Military Uniforms! Those Spit shined Shoes! You could see yourself in them! They were all so Handsome! They were quite a bit older than me, I don't think I ever told them how proud I was! We have one Brother left, all of the others have passed away. I miss them. They were like Fathers to me. Our Father died when I was 10 months old. Thank your Father for his service to our country. So glad that you have this recording of him. Thank him for explaining this changing of our Flag! I didn't know why they were doing that and it didn't feel right. His explanation is a good reason for the change. I just wish that they had let all of us know WHY they were doing it. GOD bless you and your family.
My LDC instructor who was a Captain in the Army and on his uniform he told us why it was like that, and I quote. "The flag faces this way because we run into battle, as the flag flies behind us. We don't run away from battle."
I was in Vicenza Italy in the 90s living thru a lot of what you spoke of 3/325 ABCT, I got my German Jump wings the same way, spent 5 days with a team of Jump Masters putting out the Germans in that exchange…. It was a great experience, did the similar process with Italians, Honduras and Belgium,,, AATW!!!
You're an ass. What did you think, you were a funny guy with your comment? Say that to to our faces, those of us that survived the Vietnam war and the 58,220 that didn't. I'd bet you weren't even born during the Vietnam era and if you were, you were pissing in your diapers, Asshat!
God bless you for your service. All the men & women who served Americas beef is not with any of you, but rather the gov. who sent you . Thank you again.
coal miner here from west Virginia . I never served . my father was in the army , he served some time in Germany . actually it was at the same time elvis Presley was there . he came out right after the Cuban missile crisis . but I just wanted to say that this interview really touched my heart especially seeing how he shows his feelings openly I can tell this is one fine man its great to have a father like that they don't make men like that anymore . I always say that about my father and grandfather ... tell your dad I said thanks for his service ..
ah facinating story, I am glad you sat down with your dad who was one of the first in a company element though checkpoint charlie, and a special division of the army, we need to know the stories of the soldiers and those that were there, and those that were willing to pay the price of liberty, it appears your dad has a bit of strong feelings about the subject, but I am glad he was willing to share, also thats a fairly good size bar in the background. Riveting story Man. And Tell your Dad Thanks for serving Jeremy manga12
• Chest or helmet represent supremacy of the flag over the soldier. US Soldier "walk" among the nation, not behind it. This is also why some countries like Korea and China put their national symbols onto their helmet and/or chest. (In those countries, soldiers stand "behind" the nation and not "next" to it.) There's also the issues regarding that the flag could easily become a targeted point. The main reason why it's on that part of the arm is specially to avoid it being shot at and also because it's one of the part that isn't vital, yet rarely detach from the body. It's more protected than most of the other part of the body. For example, if a soldier blow up on a mine, chances are great that his arm's part with the insigna will still be attached to the torso and recognizable. • Left side is reserved for accomplishment (in the making or of the past). It's a no brainer thing : Left side is about your story you left behind. Right side is about what's right in the world. Also, if you never see anyone with a backwards flag tattoo, then you might haven't seen every marines tattoo. I'm chatting with 1 ex-marine and 1 marine while I'm playing Arma 2-3 and both has the reversed flag as tattoo on their right arm and both did it for the same reason : They might take their uniform at some point, but this is for life. There's this misconception where reversed flag = upside-down which is not true. I'm not an US citizen, but a Canadian and yet I know more about the US flags (as I have studied its design history since I'm a graphic designer) than many US citizens I crossed path in my life.
Chest is where your rank goes so you can easily be identified, if the flag is on your chest then it would always be getting worn out, considering you crawl in mud and dirt and all the led flying at you is coming straight for it
Was first issued the reverse field flag in while serving with the 2nd BCT, First Infantry Division in June 1999 as we were headed to Kosovo for Operation Joint Guardian. We had all the sewing shops in Schweinfurt, Bad Kissingen, and Würzburg busy as hell sewing flags onto uniforms.
With regard to the Beret, the first Airborne Troops to wear the Maroon Beret were the British, and the West Germans Airborne Troops picked up wearing the Maroon Beret from their British allies. Also, I was in Germany at around the same time (71-74 for me), and while I was there, the Armor and Cavalry units started wearing a Black Beret, also inspired by the British. While the Maroon Beret has continued to be worn by the Airborne, the Black Beret was only worn by the 7th Army for a short period of time of maybe 5-10 years.
The reasons it's "Backwards" is because when platoons and squadrons carried the actual flag with them, it would march on the right to show everyone respecting it, then when they charged, the flag flowed in the wind with the stars charging into into battle with the stripes following behind it. Imagine it has a soldier with a physical flag running into battle. The wind is blowing against it with the stars above the soldiers head and the stripes flowing behind it.
All the Way... awesome origination story of the adoption of the Airborne beret. I was in from 96 on and wore it on the left side during a UN mission. Then on the right with flag protocol for a NATO mission. Then just before OIF, we were given orders to have the flags on in reverse because of the declaration of war as a battle flag. Assaulting forwards. This was standard throughout the 101st ABN... later I saw the whole Army wear it.
The maroon berets signified commonwealth airborne infantry units beginning in 1942 with the British 1st Airborne division and the parachute regiment. It was first fielded in North Africa in November 1942. The green beret was adopted by commonwealth commando units in 1941 and these two units became the source of many foreign airborne and special forces official headress.
Thank you for this interview. Regardless of how, when and why change is made, it happened. I THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE. Shame on all disrespectful comments below. Until you walked in this Soldiers Boots, or any other Soldiers boots, keep your comments under the rock you crawled out from. RESPECT, all who serve this Great Country of ours.
Stop making shit up. There's absolutely not one single disrespectful comment toward this man. People will do anything for likes, this generation is on some straight up B.S.
In that protocol shouldn't certain division / unit 'handed' patches for example, the 101st airborne or the 1st cavalry when worn on the left shoulder are facing forward (in advance) but when worn on the right shoulder are facing backward (retreat). Couldn't they have a reverse one for the right shoulder? After all, all patches have a full color and low visibility version.
BTW, this wearing of the flag on the right maybe because the left side is already busy with patches anyway, also correct me if I am wrong, but dont the M.P.s and S.P. wear their armbands on the left and it would cover the flag up?
I remember seeing photos from the early 80s that the US Army had American flags on their desert uniforms for Bright Star 1980 in Egypt. The Marines in Lebanon around 1981 before and after the bombing of the Marine Barracks.I don't quite remember if they did the same for Grenada in 1983.For me in Panama 1989-90 we pinned on American flags and white engineer tapes on our right arms for the invasion.By 2000 Gen.Schoomaker ordered that American flags be part on our BDU uniforms till i retired wearing the Army's ACUs.
Without watching I'll explain it pretty quickly. When a soldier runs into battle with the flag, it will be backwards due to the wind blowing it while you run. If it is forwards then you are obviously going backwards, and you never retreat.
hey I worked with a guy who was with your unit in Germany. Said there was one night they went out to east berlin too and there was a bar fight where some guy saw the specialist eagle insignia which looked kind of like a polish eagle and some drunk guy tried saying "polski soldat!" and when he corrected him that they were americans by showing the flag, he dumped his beer in his face. there was almost a fight and the german police showed up and let the american troops leave while arresting the drunk guy. he was in your company. don't remember his name. I think it was gary. but he currently works at home depot off 135th in overland park ks. look him up if you're interested. before his time there he was a radio operator stationed in nam.
The blue is always attached to the pole and when charging forward with a flag, the flag flies backwards as it moves forward. The US flag is and never will be shown in a retreating position
Lol, this should have been a 10 second explanation, if that. Q: Why is the flag reversed? A: It isn't. The stars lead the stripes when charging into battle.
All the arguments saying that the flag is backwards and somehow it's some sort of demon and has some meaning is a bit silly and stupid. Lateral reversing of a flag means nothing. Flags get reversed laterally all the time. If you want to talk symbolism, and tradition putting it on the left side is not a compromise because the left side is the inferior side.

Very, very cool. Your pops is obviously a very thoughtful guy too...was wearing his heart on his sleeve in this video, so to speak.
Its not a backwards flag its simply everyone carrys the american flag on them and just like in the wind it flies as youre charging in.
Tom IsLame It also flies with the stars forward relative to direction when the US army is running away like it did in Vietnam.
I'm sorry, where did you serve again?
If you're running into battle as fast as us the wind doesn't effect the direction of the flag :P
You're an ass. What did you think, you were a funny guy with your comment? Say that to to our faces, those of us that survived the Vietnam war and the 58,220 that didn't. I'd bet you weren't even born during the Vietnam era and if you were, you were pissing in your diapers, Asshat!
I'm not being an ass, that's actually the reason the stars are supposed to face forwards. I don't see how that was disrespectful.
It signifies the soldiers moving forward.
Thank you for your service Sir.

Your father is a bad ass!
Thanks for serving ♥️🇺🇸
Fantastic story. Thank you for sharing it.

LOVE YOU DAD
Good answer I wondered that.
If it were in Canada you wouldn't know the difference
Canadian flag. a leaf between two rolling papers.
Did he actually say he was able to feel the difference when the stars on the flag were switched from the back to the front?
"I wont say it" lmao!!!! I know exactly what he's talking about!!!
I’m quite curious as to why it’s not worn on the left arm which would solve this problem.
All I can say is... THANK YOU.
Without watching I'll explain it pretty quickly.
When a soldier runs into battle with the flag, it will be backwards due to the wind blowing it while you run. If it is forwards then you are obviously going backwards, and you never retreat.
Thanks for the video and the service though do you know why you were on the menu? Captured operation #juanosavin
Great vid on this,
Truth about haning the flag on a Lto the R.and Rto the L. There are reasons for this even back then.
nice vid.....thanks gentleman
If the American flag is backwards it mean war but if it's forward it mean retreat
Fascinating
soo, cool ! no doubt I do respect you soo much event though I was only 5years old. I love the story! !!!
It’s going into battle and not retreating. Running with a physical flag you’ll see stars first and strips behind it.
What a legend
How can it be considered "backwards" if it is being displayed correctly according to protocol?
the thumbnail doesn't have a 50 star flag
The flag isn't backwards. It's assaulting forward.
So he claimed to have come up with the idea to wear it that way? No disrespect to him, but I call BULLSHIT.
I much prefer it how we do now, with the flag advancing with you. It looks unnatural retreating on the right sleeve like that
hey I worked with a guy who was with your unit in Germany.
YOU are CLOSER to the REAL TRUTH than any of the others!!! MILITARY TRADITION "MEANS SOMETHING" to ALL the VETERANS who have ACTUALLY SHED BLOOD for the US FLAG!!!
Crazy stories!
what's the first rule?
don't stay stuck in the same thing for too long, it'll become too familiar and you won't adapt to change.
Second rule:
when politics start using words like indefinite when it concerns American Indians make'em regret it instantly, this ain't england.
opposite from the what was put in 1776
War is unnecessary and is for murders who want to kill, rape or both. I thought it was because you would say the American pledge to it
USAF Security Forces wear black berets, and they badass
They actually wear blue berets.

If I was a soldier I wouldn't wear that patch because it's facing the wrong way, backwards, on its face side etc. To me it's a slap in the face to wear a backwards flag as it is to burn one. In print work that is backwards. That's some devil lived crap going on.?
There is no if. You'll never be a soldier if you're this stupid.
And you will never be in graphics or in any kind of print work because you are stupid.
if your not in the military then stfu, you have no opinion
It is that way so it looks like it Is flying
