@@HomesteadinHawaii Oh and I grow giant collards here in Washington State all year round for my chicken. They live for years. Haven't propagated them from cuttings yet but plan too. Potatoes are another easy crop here too.🫶
If you want a squash that is fairly similar to zucchini, look into upo squash (bottle gourd). They are insane here! I'm in Manoa and planned one of those plants. Out vines and climbs all over the place. My vine was probably 30 ft end to end. It also put out a lot of fruit. I fertilized every other week and had to keep a steady stream of compost on it. It produced like crazy and had no disease or insect pressure. It was amazing! The fish side is that it will take over any where it can climb. It was growing all over my trellises and up my giant mountain Apple tree.
Here in So Cal I can and do grow almost everything but tropicals. And what do I mostly eat? Imported tropicals! 😅 Really helpful video, as it’s important to grow what WANTS to grow in your own micro climate. I’ve killed dozens of plumeria and pineapples trying to push against nature, and it just never works.
Excited to find your channel!!! I live on kaua’i and I’ve spent the last 4-5 years experimenting with which varieties do best in my garden. Love your screen house… those dang pickleworms are the fricken worst. I have great success with the kilo Napa cabbage. They regularly get to be over 5lbs! I also grow a lot of winged bean, long bean, Roma beans, okra, leeks, kale, peppers… and success with cukes hydroponically. Omg zucchini. Fail every time.
Thanks for sharing. Some plants are impossible. I grew some good zucchini one season and then never again. It can be tough but sounds like you found some good things that work for you
What kind of peppers do you get to grow for you? Any sweet/ bell types? We get so much rain in Hilo I just can’t find a bell pepper that can handle it!
@@dnmckay honestly I just take the seeds from the Costco bell peppers and sprout them. I have the most success with peppers using the kratky method in 5 gallon buckets. I feel like I have a problem. Banks is here because they’re usually exposed to the humidity in the stores and they just don’t germinate well. So I try to use and find fresh seeds whenever possible.
@@dnmckay The Hawaii seed growers network has a few that work here, you may just need to grow it under cover depending on how much rain you get. Some of those work, but some do not do too well here. Figs are kind of tasteless and we need a dry spell for coriander, red onion? I'd like to try that, so far only green onions grow.
Thanks for representing the east side on you tube! I’m gardening in Hilo at about 500’ elevation. I’ve got great snap peas right now, “magnolia” variety. Also bush green beans “jade”. I also have lots of success growing kambocha squash, bunching green onions “ishikura”, curled blue kale. Japanese cucumbers “suyo long” have done well. “Sun king” broccoli works well for me.. no luck with zucchini or bell peppers!
I've had bell peppers work under cover, until white flies took over but we got a little harvest for a while, thanks for all of those other variety ideas, I'll have to try some out
My favorite chef instructor in pastry school told me that so would like Hawaii. I’m from the PNW, and the climate there seems so different from what aim used to. I wonder how I would grow my food if I did move there
My Rosemary does quite well here in Belize. Has anyone had success in growing different lettuce's in the tropics? I've seen it here so I know it grows but I want to grow my own.
I would get a bigger container. If you have a Costco membership, swing by their bakery and ask if they have buckets they're throwing out. I usually will get a free 2 or 3 gallon bucket, which is perfect for growing lettuce (hydroponically or with soil if you make drainage holes)
I just learnt about the ratlung worm (I live in Australia and technically is a ratlung area) So is not safe with lettuce but will be safe with tomatoes? (even if you eat them raw) same with the herbs?
Slugs tend not to crawl up tomatoes cause of the hairs, they don’t like herbs much either but my buddy got RLWD from cilantro that was harvested and left out in a container under a tarp where the slugs showed up. Just be very careful and wash and inspect when eating raw.
Okay Hawaii peoples, help me out...do we technically have to use frost dates to plant certain seeds at certain times if there no snow here? I mean temperatures really don't drop below 60 degrees, so does it still count? Or can we literally just grow things all year long?
You should read up about rat lungworm. You might think twice about growing your own lettuce. That’s why you need my ebook, all the planting info is in there but onions should be planted in the fall
Is the lettuce from farmers markets on the Big Island safe? I visited last week and bought some and made salad. Curious to know if there are any methods that work to avoid the snails getting to your lettuce plants.

This is great information and it's about time Hawaii grows its own food. Thanks Sir💐
Thank you!

Thanks for sharing your helpful informative experience. Cherry Tomatoes (at 450’) in Kauai. Also comphrey grows like a weed and Aloe Vera thrives.😊

I grow tons of cucumbers and I’m a beginner so didn’t know I needed to fertilize or anything and I live in Waipahu
Things start off good then all the nutrients in the soil get used up so you have to fertilize and feed it again
I'm in Lihue. Few things grow better here than basil. Chinese broccoli is a good alternative to traditional types.
The asian vegetables work great in Hawaii, that's a good point. I do need to try more basil.
Love the ebook! We’ve had good luck with rattlesnake beans
Thanks Hal. I’m glad you like the ebook. And thanks for the rattlesnake bean suggestion
3:18 That's for Korean Kimchi cabbages! I didn't know it can grow on tropical.
What do you think? If it works, fantastic!
It should do well, but I think it depends on location and time. I plan on seeding it in the fall
Awesome video!

It is a change that's for sure. A lot of what you are used to does not grow in Hawaii. You have to change your perception on what constitutes food.

I use frost dates to let me know, should I plant this over winter or will summer be better. We still have seasons here
Do the zucchini varieties you recommend need to be protected from pickle worm?
Yeah. That’s way I got them in a screened in covered grow house. The variety helps with the downy mildew but pickle worms still need to be battled
