    There’s a dude on RUclips who collected just about every modern Rolex available. He purchased them from his ADs (plural). When he was done, his collection looked like the AD museum showcase sans the not for sale signs. And it was sad, because the guy was like “IDK what’s next. Patek maybe?” And the collection was, to me, boring. And it felt like the collector was bored. That sucks, considering the $$$ and all the fun things he could have done with the money. To answer the question presented: he is undeniably a watch collector. But he has followed a path that I am not inclined to take…and I like Rolex!

    I posit this thought as a non Rolex owner. If you are keeping a group of things for the sake of having those things that is a true collection. If simply having those things means, you will dump them when the ROI is there, that’s not really a collection, because the intent never was to keep them. Transfer that to watches. I think if you were going to have Rolexes, for the sake of having Rolexes, and wear them and enjoy them, and occasionally sell one off and add another one, that is a true collector. If someone is buying a watch whether they wear it and enjoy it or not with the intent of selling it for money afterward, that’s an investor, not a collector.

    In 2006 I bought a new datejust and continued to buy and keep watches which often cost more. I have shifted to collecting watches that require more time and thought about once a year that cost less than $1000 new, and are absolutely brilliant. It’s more challenging in some ways, but more enjoyable and much more affordable.

    Brilliant fair video. Glad you lanced this boil! For me, the Rolex people talk as much about money, as of the Rolex. They never talk about the watch, but they talk about how much they paid, how much it's worth now, and how much they think it will be worth. And the killer point, they can sell because they think it's reached it's high point on their valuation chart. There is no emotion about selling. It "kerching" time. And what is the point in that? It's just greed. So to sum up, they are collectors, but collectors of money.

My opinion is, it would be willfully unagreeable to make an argument that Rolex is the best or most innovative or even more interesting than any other watch brand ever. • @mitchmitchell9588
      @mitchmitchell9588 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@chaosnyli Let me clarify. It would be semantic to argue Rolex collectors are not watch enthusiasts because it would require a subjective interpretation of the meaning of the word "enthusiast".The Latin root of enthusiasm is enthousiasmos, Greek for "inspired or possessed by God". One could argue that, based on anecdotal evidence, Rolex collectors appear more motivated by money or status than a divinely-inspired love for horology. That's one argument. But whatever the argument in support of the conclusion that Rolex collectors are not watch enthusiasts, there is a definitional element to the argument that makes it semantic and therefore purely a matter of subjective opinion.

      @brianwca 5 месяцев назад +3

      I came to say something similar. I consider myself an enthusiast and to me that means being deeply interested in horology. I don't see how someone could be deeply interested in horology and collect only watches from a brand that seems to actively avoid high complications and, until recently, didn't even let us easily see the movement through the caseback. They still take very little interest in finishing the movement to make it aesthetically beautiful as well as functional, and that's a key interest of the horological enthusiast. Functional achievements have their place, but you elevate your craft to art form when you also concern yourself with the aesthetic beauty of your creations. Rolex does have some beautiful dials and does gem-setting with the best out there, but they've actively ignored trying to make beautiful movements, and so that keeps them from satisfying the horological enthusiast.

    Buy what you like. Wear what you like. Collect what you want, anything more than one watch is a collection. If you make a few pounds great, if you lose pounds so be it.
    My personal opinion you should wear everything you buy. But sometimes the practicality of wearing an expensive watch is challenging in certain cities.
    Lots of people looked for different investment options when interest rates were low. Now the market is normalised the lots of people lost on paying over the odds on watches.
    I love the mechanics and history of watches, the memories you build with them. I cannot afford everything I would like but that is ok. Good luck to those who can.

    I have a Rolex. I used to have another. I didn’t have them both at the same time. I guess more than one anything meets the minimum requirement to use the word collection. I grew up where the only watch brand above a Seiko was Rolex, available at one store at the mall, and if you were interested in watches like I was when I was a kid, seeing one on someone’s wrist caught your attention, and not always for the best reasons, and that’s how stereotypes are born. And it’s when the stereotypes come into play that words like “collector” and “enthusiast” become fun for the casual observer. Rolex Guy in all of his greasy, smarmy fresh-out-the-casino awesomeness. One of my favorites - Corvette Guy in his satin varsity-style jacket always on his way to stand for hours on end in a Cracker Barrel parking lot with the same 13 or 14 other Corvette Guys. The scent of leaking Castro 10W40 and Aqua Velva… how is this not a Yankee Candle? My watch collection is modest. I love them all and most importantly, they all get worn and don’t just sit around in their boxes. Collector, enthusiast, or hardcore new to the game investment looking to recoup their bitcoin losses who otherwise might have never cared about watches at all, I guess it takes all types. Do you like/love/appreciate watches for what they are? That’s the question.

I rarely gain an emotional attachment to any of my purchases for longer than a few months & would only consider 3/4 of my watches as keepers.
    I'm totally comfortable with my failings & view any loss I incur on the sale of a previous flavour of the minute as the cost of wearing. I love all my watches from my Tsar Bomba to Rolex OP or Datejust at the time of purchase, much like any of the woman I've fleetingly loved in my life. IMO the problem with Rolex is that it is seen as both a symbol of wealth and luxury for the non-enthusiasts and as some kind of ultimate tool watch by many enthusiasts. yet it doesn't really excel at either role. Rolex is relatively expensive but not particularly luxurious. It's also not a great tool watch either (considering that you can get far better performing options for a fraction of the price e.g. a $50 G-Shock). But if you love Rolex, and can afford it, then who am I to tell you that you're not a collector?

    I have two cameras, both the same brand. I use both regularly: each are better suited to different tasks. Does that make me a camera collector, an enthusiast of that brand or an amateur photographer? Two out of three? I have four watches, each of which I wear regularly and I have no intention of selling any of them. Three of them are Omega and one is Rolex. Does that make me a watch collector, an Omega enthusiast or a bloke who enjoys wearing different watches to suit what he’s doing each day?
    I’d say hoarding and/or flipping is not collecting. There’s a middle ground where you collect without accumulating more watches than you can sensibly appreciate and only sell infrequently, either because you aren’t wearing it or need to afford something else (not necessarily another watch). YMMV

    @NKKK85 5 месяцев назад +3

    Are they Rolex collectors? Sure! Definitely!
    Should we call them they watch collectors? No. Because most dont know enough (or much) about any watches except the resale value of their Rollies. I have encountered Rollie owners who do not know the difference between the 31xx vs 32xx movements, nor do they know which movement runs in their Rollies. There are other Rollie owners who do not know what is "Glidelock", or which rotating bezels are aluminium and which are ceramics. Nvm bakelite.
    They may own watches. But I dont think you can refer to them as watch collectors. Yet for what its worth - i dont think they give a shxt about whether others see them as watch collectors or not.
    Often times, they need people to know that they are rich - and they are afraid of losing money on their watches. Its a different paradigm.
    Yes, Rollie collectors have the right to do whatever they like with their money. But in that same vein, collectors have the right to their opinion as well. Thus, collectors are well within their right to refer to a collection of only modern Rollies as boring, overly-hyped, and attention seeking - or maybe not. Regardless, its just opinions.
    Yes its true - if Rolex are so popular, they must be doing something right. In that same vein, if its such a popular opinion amongst watch collectors that solely-Rollie collections are boring and overhyped, then there must be something right about that opinion as well.
    Having said the abv, one may note that a collection comprising modern + neo vintage + vintage Rollies arent exactly hyped - nor boring. Such a collection would likely have greatly interesting stories about the collectors' journey (apart from holding value). But that is also just an opinion.

      Then again, there are people with watch collections who genuinely don’t know a whole lot about watches. Yeah, Rolex makes nice watches which should be priced more like: $3k Datejust, $5k steel sub, $9k steel Daytona. Rolex are commensurate with the finishing and movements of watches in those price ranges and are considerably lower than JLC, Glasshutte Original, and Grand Seiko. I am not a contrarian/hipster, but would not spend MSRP on any Rolex because it really does project that you're not into watches and only care about what other people think. As an enthusiast, I care about the engineering and design much more than brand or heritage. If you spend a bunch of money on A. Lange or JLC, you come off as someone who is much more knowledgeable and genuinely interested in the hobby, rather than one who cares about impressing other people. Yes, I would love certain Rolex models, but only in a world where it didn't make me look shallow - and not for MSRP!

    Somewhere back in 2021, I found myself in an ice cream shop with a friend, when an obviously suburban or at the very least tourist family wandered in from the deep dish pizza restaurant across the street, in search of more saturated fat. The porcine patriarch of this dull brood happened to be wearing what I mistook at first glance to be a white dial OP 39. I sidled up to him, eager to have a chat with a fellow enthusiast and to pay him a bona fide compliment. When I asked him if the piece was in fact an OP, the blood drained from his overfed bulbous face and he began to look around furtively, essentially implying that I was a potential thief who'd found his mark. This boob even managed to stammer in answer to my inquiry something to the effect of "not if you're going to steal it." then muttering that he was actually wearing a DJ (a 41 with fluted bezel as it turned out-the cyclops should've given it away). It was immediately clear that this was not an enthusiast at all but someone with too much money and comparatively less couth. At times I've thought that those most interested in the Ro-flex aspect of this brand shouldn't be allowed to even cross the threshold of an AD's boutique without being tased into submission.

    Some people exclusively collect G-Shocks, they are considered collectors. If someone exclusively collects Rolex, for the watches, they are collectors all right. If they do so exclusively as an investment, I'd argue they are investors, specially if they keep them boxed in a safe. The same happens with art, many people "collect" art as an investment, usually not even displaying their pieces. Again, they are not art collectors, they are investors. I collect watches and coins, my collection includes a couple of Rolex I wear regularly. I am more of an Omega fanboy, owning 4, but I like my 2 Rolex very much. Regarding my coins, years ago I bought a gold coin with a certificate of authenticity, it came in a plastic case. I broke it open because I enjoy coins, feeling them is part of my enjoyment. A friend told me I just devaluated my coin, but I collect coins, I don't invest in coins, so breaking the box open was logical to me.

    you can always be a Rolex collector if you have more than 3 of them (otherwise you just have a couple) but that doesn't make you a watch collector or enthusiast. you are a brand collector who doesn't know how to appreciate other artists and brands for what they are really known for. I think people are afraid of missing out on the hype, the investment and popularity when they don't buy Rolex. You probably dint want the Rolex but had the chance to get it to anyway, and still got it. But yes, there are better brands that offer more, and sell less. Rolex prices are too high for being tool watches. I got mine before the pandemic, when prices were still normal. todays prices are crazy!

    Interesting conversation. I wonder if the anti-Rolex sentiment is more about those who hold those sentiments (... and maybe their inability to to get a Rolex around their wrists -- an inability with which I am also afflicted) then the Crown itself. Of course people are free to like and dislike whatever they choose, but it's concerning when personal dislikes metastasize into zealotry. If you don't want a Rolex then great (the rest of us would appreciate at little less demand), but imagine a mechanical watch industry without Rolex.

Yes my Omega seamaster 300 has a technically superior movement, my speedmaster has more horological history and significance than almost any other watch. But the Rolex is special.

Thats why Rolex is popular, most will buy Rolex thinking their "into watches" its easy, the heritage is easy to understand because its mostly made up anyway. You can go so much deeper into horology and discover so much more, but it takes effort most couldn't be bothered with

If I won the lottery, Id buy so many both lower end and higher end, because for me, a pricepoint doesnt define what I think is good. This whole conversation is a perfect example of the core subject of the video. It's really a "them" and "us" conversation. Are you someone who will watch a video solely around a sematic argument between one arbitrary watch industry/community term or another? If you are here engaging with the video and the conversation you are an "us", if you are not then you are a "them" - or you have poor taste in RUclips watch channels. 🙂
    I don't have a label for my interest in watches and I don't have a theme for my modest collection but it is very much about me and what's important to me. I don't like Rolexes because I don't like to be manipulated into wanting something (or at least I want the veil to remain unbroken so I don't know I'm being manipulated). I like and have a Tudor, which makes no sense considering the first statement! I like and have a Pam Submersible, which I purchased instead of an Omega Dark of Moon when I found most vintage inspired watches look like kids watches on my wrist.
    Royal Oak, Nautilus, Richard Mille and chronographs - are just meh to me. I know you are "supposed" to desire them but I think that is what turns me off them. So this is really the heart of it, i you collect watches, it's for your own reason and only you get to decide if that makes you a watch collector or something else.

    I find the terms, collector, enthusiast, hobbyist and the like ,silly, and the way in which people differentiate those terms even sillier. The whole Rolex hate part of it is, in most cases, just emotional dysfunction for those who want to be thought of as more "serious", "knowledgeable" "collectors" and dont like Rolex or people who like Rolex because of the whole hype angle. It is all very silly, childish and sad.

    As a Greek I can say that the British museum is a hoard of swag. There is an example of nuance. Similarly he does not ordinarily collect houses, just because he has 20 of them, he is an investor in property. That goes for stamps, or watches, or whatever. Rolux people sound like investors, those of us who buy for beauty and curiosity with long term financial gain as a distant possible upside are collectors. Language is nuanced, let’s use it properly, e.g. I collect beautiful and interesting watches, whilst that wanker invests in rolux, ...we are not part of the same fraternity.

    I think I can be called a "collector". My reasons for "purchase" though is more on what the watch - specifically the brand - represents in terms of pop-culture. I don't wear them as I don't want to attract attention . Having smaller wrists and proclivity to 41mm steel on steel doesn't help. The pleasure of ownership is reason enough to collect. Watches, unlike cars of old (1910's - 2010) are visually similar and the ones that buck the trend are atrociously FUGLY except to A Lange Sohne so I don't aspire to the likes of Hublot (not that I can afford those). Even the Panda Rolex Daytona looks like an angry face and I cannot fathom why anyone would spend that much money to look at a face that frowns back, even if Paul Newman found it attractive.
