@@MrThecarrott That’s a tough one to answer. The ST224 is grainier but a little less fatter than the S20. The S20 is nice and fat, typical of vintage Akai samplers. The ST224 has a proper sequencer (albeit very basic) but the Akai is just a phrase recorder so you’ll need to use an external sequencer with it. The work flow is slightly more simpler on the S20 In my experience, but that’s mainly because the ST224 has more features. It also has effects which the S20 doesn’t. Both cool machines. If I were to buy another I think I’d go for the ST224.
@@TUBEDIGGA thanks for the reply mate, I think I ll go with the zoom. I can hear the punchier sound on the Akai but it seems like it has little sound design options compared to the zoom...btw on the zoom is it possible to change adsr? Best
Got each of these in my set up Had the S20 for a little while now and mainly use for resampling beats and samples but drums though it do knock nicely! Really liking the ST224 now as well (haven’t owned it long) and that machine can get some really nice sounding samples out of it!
ST224 Is one of the best lo-fi samplers if not the best. Gives sp303 a run for its money. If it had better pads than these unresponsive buttons it would have been the best boom bap sampler money could buy
Yeah that’s pretty much it. Although I wouldn’t say the sound of the Zoom is comparable to an SP. It’s definitely got a nice unique grungy sound to it when you use the LoFi sample rate modes. The S20 is a highly underrated device. It’s very basic but if you use it for sound processing it’s sound is thick and heavy and again, unique. In fact I preferred its sound to my old S950. Both decent small format samplers. The only down side of the ST224 was my jog wheel was glitchy so I could never get accurate pitch adjustments so watch out for that if you are considering buying one.
I gotta get both of those samplers back. Especially the s20. I didn't realize it's potential because of its sequencer or lack of it. I saw it being triggered with an Atari St 1000.
@@TUBEDIGGA For sure. Do you have a memory card reader installed or are you loading floppies? First 1:30 on the following vid is the button row at work on mine (I don't have a card reader installed). ruclips.net/video/i0BSQwQyORw/видео.html. Not spamming, just sharing ;)
Do a whole album with dirty 16 bit samplers !!! I'm sick of all this 12 bit hipster crap were being saturated with, some starbucks sippin mop head dudes callec yarik from Greenland making lame attempts at trying to be madlib. 12 bit is great on a snare drum but 16 bit lofi at low sample rates is that PERFECT ammount of dirt (amd some uniys do geg super dirty) especially with a splash of vintage reverb and delay, vinyl sim also rules. I think you can be at the forefront of a new renaissance here - a better one - one that's more Wu-Tang then it is Beasty Boys 😉
I appreciate the suggestions but not all of us using 12 bit samplers are hipsters. The S2400 is an amazing machine for example, and the aliasing artefacts it produces aren’t always that typical ringing sound. You can heavily saturate drums and get some lovely textures from the filters. I do have the ASRX which is 16 bit and can easily resample at high pitches and down sample thereafter. It’s my favourite sounding sampler out of them all.
deroden Its fine but I haven’t used it too much for that specific purpose as I’m using it predominantly to trigger and sequence my old samplers. My ASRX pads are failing so I’ll be using it to trigger that. It’s a very well built machine though. In my opinion the best machines for finger drumming are the MPC One and even the Roland MC-707 as it has some nice sensitivity settings. If you check my Instagram I have a video on there where I’m playing the 707 pads with drumsticks. You can do come great rolls by gently bouncing the stick tips off the pads.
@@TUBEDIGGA Thanks! Size-wise, are the Squid pads a good bit smaller than the MPC One? Tough to tell from a video alone. I would just check it out the pads in person but none my of my local stores carry the Squid, so would have to order online.
I've been wanting a st-224 for a while. How's the squid? I'm thinking about an Akai Force. I like the big screen to sequence & the 64 pads. I guess I want something similar to Sony Acid in a hardware form.
The ST224 is excellent. The Squid is also excellent but the workflow takes a bit to get used to. I wouldn’t expect the Force to behave like Acid. It’s more like a hybrid of an MPC and the old Yamaha RM1X sequencer in the way it handles midi clips 👍👊
@@TUBEDIGGA Good cause I still use my RM1X all the time. I love it's step sequencer, but its not good for polyphonic step sequences & that's the advantage I see in the Force with the piano roll step sequencing.
@@DJDigitalJosh Love the force for that kind of sequencing! Received a squid today too and hope to get the grasps quickly because it's another kind of animal ;)
A compilation of beats using two of my favourite vintage samplers, the Akai S20 and the Zoom Sampletrak ST224.
Which one has best sound? Don't know which one to get 😔

@@MrThecarrott No, as far as I can remember neither have any envelopes.
I just picked up one of these Zoom St224s and I love this sampler because of the small size and simplicity of its functions
yooo the sample that comes from the "catching a vibe with my 1973 Fender Rhodes Mark I" is smoooth!
Right on. Nice sudden change in style at the end there. 🤣🤣🤣
I like the sound of that S20. Nice!

yeah it's a decent little device, overlooked and underrated, still sells for cheap on eBay!
The pads are actually fine. At least my ST‘s have great enough pads to bang out that boom bap sound easily :)
what do you think of the su700?

the st 224 for sp1200-style textures and the S20 for sample dynamics and punch ?

Awesome journey into old school, luvly. S20 is a beast, I put a little row of momentary buttons along the front of mine to gate circuit bends.

Yeah! So creative! Specially like the second one : )
So the chopped breaks...is that something you can make on the sampletrak? Or edited on the pc and then imported?
Chopping is easy on the ST224. Just copy the sample across several pads then adjust the start points of each pad.
I'm going back to the studio soon.....yeeee
Is there any way I can purchase the beat at 4:50?
Send me an email please, address in video description 👍
These sound great! I own both and love them very much!! Great music!! Are these on tape somewhere?
S20 all day!!!
Thinking about buying an ST rite now!
