Cool. I don't know why the Fields Medal doesn't get as much publicity as the Nobel Prize.

It's hard to explain the work a pure mathematician does in a simple way to the general public.

What matters is to be better than others, Perelman is the best and he and everyone knew it, that's what matters, no matter how he is but what he is. The best words one can hear are We Need you.

Grigori has morals and intellect. He rejected the prize because he thought that his prize must be shared with Richard who also did work on Poincare conjecture which inspired and helped him.

Having studied the Ricci flow a bit, I now agree with Perelman's decision and respect his integrity. Hamilton's contribution was immense and he should have been awarded as well.

@nelsyeung so you mean that any who accept medals or money is not a true mathematician? or even not a true scientist? Face it. Perelman is a great mathematician indeed, but it doesn't mean that refusing medal and money is one of the criteria for being a mathematician.

@tattoconga sorry for this late answer, but i just saw the message :/
Anyway, depends on what you want to graduate. There are many good institutes and universities in Italy. The only problem maybe the money cuts government made to public universities and schools, but the professors are very very qualified and almost everybody of them got years of studies abroad (USA, Europe, Asia etc.) from the most eminent colleges and universities around the world.
