It may look like he is not some genius and I agree, frankly, he is not. But, he was and maybe still is one of the smartest people in the room(if you consider coding). What he did in 2004 was remarkable of course compare to today for sure coding is a piece of cake and any person with little or no knowledge can design a social media website. But, he did all of that by himself in 2004, when the technology was not that refined. And, he gave the world some of the best tools we all use today but don't even realize it. He was the one who started this revolution of free speech and where people can put forth there own opinion rather than someone who is already a figure lecturing it to us and made our daily thoughts more diverse. And, I know what you may be thinking but let me tell you I don't worship Zuck. But, he did a lot for us and sure can count him as one of the pioneers of the internet revolution. It's like you cannot say Bill Gates did nothing or he is not a genius, he made all of this not directly but had a huge impact on everything you see around related with computers. Sure, Alan Turing was a great man and a genius. But he was Alan Turing, not Mark Zuckerberg and Mark is not Alan Turing. They both had a different approach for greatness in their life. They both are unique and deserve equal respect.

Richard Taylor doesn't seem like some member of an advanced species. Nor do Kontsevich, Tao, Donaldson, or Lurie. They're guys who have a gift, they use that gift, and they find their work profoundly motivating. It's the contrast of their humility and normalcy with the grotesque celebrity of those announcers (and especially that ridiculous audience) that makes this entire presentation awkward.
not academically. I meant in how the mathematics world pretend to be above it and then engage in the abuses that caused Perelman to leave. Of course you can misinterpret it to assume i'm talking about 5 people specifically but that's your problem.
i'm not sure i understand what you meant by pretending to be above it and abusing perelman. how could awarding and recognizing perelman the fields medal be equivalent to abusing perelman. i can't read between the lines. however upon researching, i think i understand what you meant.

I have never been a communist at any moment in my life. However I feel the mathematician’s necessity to express la Noia in mathematical descriptive style in this era of computer science.
The presentation was really nice, but this was weird. They looked like complete aliens on that stage. Altough their minds are actually quite superhuman, that's not exactly a productive way to expand and prestige mathematics, which is the main character. Yeah, that was awkward.
Santeri Rautamaa really!! This geek Zuckleberg is a better public speaker!! You gotta be kidding me. Elon Musk featured in a documentary, regularly comes on news. What the hell are you talking about?
halfvolley11 Well, technically Zuckerberg is a little bit better speaker. But Elon has improved a LOT since few years ago, and he certainly is much more likeable. Musk is a hero! Zuckerberg has this unpleasant, almost repugnant vibe about him. And he looks stupid. But I gotta say I still cringe a bit when Mr. Musk stutters and makes mistakes while speaking in an event..
Santeri Rautamaa Well I am a genuine fan of Musk. I rate him above Steve Jobs. If you look at what he is doing and what is ambitions are, he is a genius. Zuckleberg just got lucky. You have to admit.
"inspire new generation" god i want to but the country cannot. like the country is so poor you are stuck with the system and you have no resources to get out
Cumberbatch is a really great actor and the british accent is such a relieve to that awful awful American accent in movies. However I don't know if I can agree with him on the path to take with the refugee crisis in Europe.
You are just controlling math prizes among professors and homeless mathematicians has not in your dictator dictionary. I am 80 year and challenging all of you to solve Collatz Sequence, Euler Perfect Box, Fermat's Last Theorem and its General case. It is no fair for Breakthrough math prize to ignore old man solved Collatz Sequence!
Am I the only one kinda disappointed that there was no woman awarded this prize? I mean these men are great and deserve the award more than anyone and they made profound leaps in mathematics but why not also have a woman up there. I know there are women who have made just as strong breakthroughs in math so why not? I understand that they can't award this prize to everyone and had to pick only a few out of many great people but when out of five people no one is a woman it becomes slightly annoying and just not representative of the people making breakthroughs in math and the math community as a whole. I just don't want this to turn out like the fields medal where women had to wait over 75 years after the medal was founded to be awarded it in 2014.
Science is not an equality festival. You must compete to get the price. And woman are just not as good at science in general. Don't misunderstand; I'm not saying they shouldn't get it, but if they more rarely make it to the top than there is nothing to do. The sexes do have differences. Deal with it.
+juicesnap Name those women. BTW this is not about "representation" -- this is about major breakthroughs that make huge differences in their respective fields.
It's not true that men are better at mathematics than women. If you look at the correlation between performance difference between sex and gender inequality per country you will see huge gaps in countries like Iran. But by the time you get to Finland and Iceland, women perform just as well if not minimally better than men, which is just what you would expect to see if there was no causal relationship between sex and mathematical ability. The first Fields medal was awarded to an Iranian woman, so there!
What? So you just compared Zuckerberg with Dr Alan Turing? He wasn't just a code breaker. He was a truly great mathematician. A genius.
Actually it was actually a woman who has solved it.
Please dont compare zuckerburg to turing.
Yes, I agree. Money does not equal intelligence
It may look like he is not some genius and I agree, frankly, he is not. But, he was and maybe still is one of the smartest people in the room(if you consider coding). The mathematicians appeared alien-like on that stage. Like five members of an advanced species.

Why is Kayne West more popular than Terry Tao?
+gunit8590 Right, it's mostly a reflection of what most people (that participate) find the most interest in.
because Tao is too busy trying to prove that water explodes.
Actually he is trying to prove water does NOT explode.

I hope Kontsevich is well versed in Algebraic Geometry because it looks like there was a blowup in his office :).
My guess is that he just can’t stand to throw away any math.
zuckerberg justbstaring at cumberbatch like dude i bet cumberbatch feels so akward
I have come back to watch Seth's Benedict Cumberbatch joke a thousand times, and it still cracks me up! 😂😂😂
The best explanation of his name hahaha
the presence of the first two names in the title is utterly absurd
The way Mark Zuckerberg is staring at Benedict Cumberbatch in awe is me lol
Seth MacFarlane keeps saying real, meaningful things, but I've heard him tell so many jokes at these things I keep expecting one.
David Nexus Was thinking the exact thing when he was introducing the Enigma movie. Was left thinking "where the fuck is the punchline to the joke?!? "
I was eating mud at this age instead learning math.LMAO
Zuckerberg is actually German and means Sugarmountain
FYI Yiddish also has a lot of German names, and Jews in Europe spoke Yiddish mostly.
Because naturally jews in europe adopted european names
