Great video man. Dysmorphia is something I struggled with too. Ironically it's how I found your channel. And of course social isolation only made it worse.
It got to a point where just walking by a mirror could make or break a depressive episode. Any window was an opportunity to check my posture. Sometimes I even used my own shadow to see if I'm upright.
It's a nightmare. Now I am only interested in feeling good after sitting at work all day or not getting super tired after a short hike.

Great video but I wouldn't overlook the importance of posture. You know best that a good posture isn't just a visual thing, but a sign of great muscular balance. I've been working out for 15 years, always in the best shape, muscular, lean, shredded, strong. 2 years ago I injured my hip by falling against a heater with it going in first. The hip healed after 4 weeks but then low back pain came into play, followed by issues with letting water, followed by issues with the digestion (always a lot of bloating no matter what I eat). I was carrying these problems for 1,5 years without figuring out what it is, meawhile my body got stuck in some sort of swayback posture, anterior pelvic tilt, tight right psoas, popping noises when I extend my legs from laying down, weak abdomen.. really tons of stuff to fix. Then I realized I have to approach this from a muscular perspective and work on my posture and issues.
Now, one year later, my symptoms decreased by 80% and while my digestion improved along the way, the biggest improvement came when I started to work on my scapular winging. Because this blocked the expansion into my upper back - at least that's the best explanation I have - when breathing, which comes with a lot of downsides. There are also many nerves going through that region that are responsible for digestive mechanisms, so being able to breath and expand into that area might be very important. The "good posture" isn't just a cosmetical achievement, it means muscles are strong, hold you in place and everything can go where it needs to be.. I know you basically said this with "being able to get into many different postures", but I think the neutral main posture still tells everything about the muscular balances, weaknesses and areas that need work. Not just to look good but because the functions that are weak as well.

It's also worth mentioning that I believe, that many people suffer from symptoms they don't even attribute to postural issues. I was aware of everything that was caused by my declining posture after the injury because it happened so close time-wise, and I could really draw the connection. But what about people suffering from digestive or other issues since they're 5 when they fell onto a specific body part that resulted in some compensatory posture? They would most likely never find the connection. I think we know very little about what postural problems can exactly cause this or that. The main subject is always "pain". But 8 out of 10 symptoms for me were absolutely not pain related. I still exercised 5-6 days a week. Physical Therapy should look more on other things in conjunction with postural issues, especially digestion.

@@ZacCupplesPT no fokin way Z. That's some deep IFAST lore/lost Media type of stuff. If there's ever an iceberg on Bill's model, that fact would be in the deepest layer. You've just granted me some occult wisdom and I'm gonna listen to these beats ASAP
Edit: just listened to Mike's intro. Really love the drum pattern; let's you think that you're listening to some late 90s east Coast boom bap kitchen, yet the synthesizer tells you its already early 2000's and G unit sets the vibes now. Great stuff. I bet in an alternate universe, The Alchemist has taught J Dilla some corrective exercises as a side hustle.

I’ve gone to various chiropractors and physical therapist and the most recent one. I tell them that both inside and outside of my wrist is messed up my lower back, and my hips are pinching and my neck and shoulders as well…… yes it is a huge list, but I tell them and they want to start with one thing like my wrist when in my mind, it needs a more comprehensive solution that looks at everything. If I were to do one thing at a time, I would go to physical therapy 120 times per year and potentially not have the results I need

Sorry to hear that , I can really feel you , just start with some assesments of your body for upper and lower :
      And then
Try to search for exercises according to that ..

That is frustrating, and I’m sorry to hear that. You can often affect many areas with the right moves. I hope you can find someone who looks at it that way!

Thank you! Could you please explain (or give the hint how to find information) the concept "all movement is rotational". I can understand this for the shoulder/hip/knee joints and can not understand for elbow joint or for the phalangeal joint for example.
I saw several Bill Hartman's videos about Helical angle but it's difficult for me to understand this concept through the videos...
Thank you again, I love your website and your youtube channel. This resources very useful for me!

Hey Zac, what should I tackle first if I have multiple issues... lordosis, kyphosis, uneven shoulders, hip problems, and uneven ribs in the upper part of my torso, which make my chest uneven. I'm 26 years old, and I've been involved in sports my whole life.

If there is a structural problem on hips from birth .is there any way to fix it like( limited internal rotation on both hips) eg :- like surgery?

  • @Patrick-rr2qw

    Thanks for this one Zac!
I’ve been going back and forth between you and Conor Harris but noticed you have some differences that are probably quite important. The main difference I noticed is that he emphasises holding exhalations (usually left obliques) to open the right side on inhalation.
Why don’t you suggest the same breathing technique? Is it due to creating more tension?
I sometimes follow conors video and hold the left obliques and try to breathe into my right lat for example but usually don’t feel any difference and sometimes it stiffens me up more (no doubt it’s because I’m trying to hard and conor emphasises not doing that himself) my right obliques, Lat and trap are like a brick wall that can’t be breathed into or expanded. (they have some sore trigger points there as well)
Should I be focusing on just breathing into the area but not forcing it and also just getting it to move more through twists and rolls etc?

    • @ZacCupplesPT
      @ZacCupplesPT  20 дней назад

      Of course!
While I can’t speak on his behalf, I used to coach that earlier, but did find sometimes holding the tension limited subsequent expansion. It’s also another cue for people to think about, which can sometimes complicate the exercise and limit efficacy.
I’m always trying to find the simple/good enough that helps with execution , and for that, that’s why I coach it the way I do
Keys for me are to quiet inhale for 4-6 count and let the exercise put air where it needs to do
