your neighbors are fortunate to have you. most of the small engine businesses in my neck of the woods have folded up. I been working on my stuff the past 6 yrs. this channel is an excellent reference.
Great video Mustie! I especially enjoy the hang up's and obstacles that you run into and the thorough way you work through them and explain. I've been subscribed for a long while and really enjoy every one of your repair vids. Thanks
This was the best!! Thank you so much for walking us through step by step with a "real" video. Loved watching you drop pieces and twisting your fingers to retrieve stuff. Thanks again.
Great videos Mustie. I look forward to watching what you are often wrenching on. I grew up in a rust belt area and know all too well about cutting rust rot out of panels, trying to free up rusty bolts, and etc... I look forward to your next project.
Just watched this, really like it when there is beat it to fit, paint it to match is involved. great vid, have learned a lot about snow blowers, mostly rains hear in Indiana, but the humor and good old school way you work is great. Thank you.
Picked up a 1970 Ariens in early spring, the wheel bushings were so worn out that the slop in the movement hit the disk that broke the bearing housing which in turn snapped the connecting rod....got it running great now. When I got it I thought it was just a con rod. Merry Xmas Mustie.
Excellent video, really like watching you work. You know what you’re doing and you make it look easy. Not nearly as much fun when I do repairs like this.
I always enjoy watching your video. We are kindred spirits I do a lot of the same things. I have a mid 70 John Deere the same machine. I wish you a merry Christmas and keep up the videos you are one of my regulars. Dwight
I enjoy watching your video's where you work on so many things I've never seen apart. It is fun to see what failed and how things tick! Was doubting on how good that disk would clean up with some meat left. That turned out really nice.
Hey I was glad to see you tear one of these down. I had one I left in Idaho when we moved ! Can't say I miss the snow though ! It was cool to see you use the newused lathe/milling machine ! Have A Merry Christmas and a happy new year !
Hey Mustie1, Nice job on the snow blower, one has to love the way they build a whole snow blower around the friction disk... Need some coffee with them cookies.... Hope U and the wife had a great Christmas!
I have a YardMan 13-33. I paid a local guy to put a new rubber wheel on it last year. I don't even remember what I paid him, but I didn't really care. You make it look easy. You are really good, man.
I have the Ariens 8524 from 12-26-2003. It's never let me down except for a few clip pins broke off. If I have any problems with the drive, I'm confident I could fix it with your great video. Thanks!
My sincere thanks and gratitude for all your shared knowledge, the great narration, humour and invitation to ride along with you in your truck, your homeland and workshop. Best wishes and Merry Christmas to you and your lady wife. Greetings from Ireland
When I installed my new drive wheel I covered the drive drive dive disc, with a piece of cardboard from a cereal box, to avoid adding any grease, great video 👍🏿. I am surprised you did not have it on the hoist.
I have the almost exact same snowblower that I bought used from a Asian woman that literally almost destroyed it from snow blowing on a gravel driveway. I took half the summer a few years ago and refurbished it. You wouldn't believe how abused this Ariens 824 was. Have a Merry Christmas Mustie!
Good job, I've had to do this on my Ariens, just the friction wheel. Think mine is newer than that one, takes the larger wheel. You seemed to have much less trouble than I did, anyway I got it done. My neighbour has fixed the disk plate with JB weld and it's still going fine. As always I enjoy your videos. Wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas, and a healthy and happy 2017.
When I lived in Laconia NH, I had the same snow blower and I had to do that repair and all new bearings and bushings. Also put a new chain on as well just cause. It was fun to watch someone else do it and with no colorful language like I used. Merry Christmas !
Happy New Year !!! I really enjoy watching you fix stuff and can't believe some of the deals you get. People in the South just want like new prices for their equipment. Keep making more videos and hope 2017 is better for us all. You inspire me....The Handicapped Homie.......
Awesome vid...Ariens blowers are the best. That one is very similar to my '77, which is still running strong with only annual oil changing and lubrication.
I enjoyed the video. Timely for me. I am about to install a track drive conversion kit on my Ariens snowblower. A more recent and different model. I have not been inside of the covers on the blower since it has been working well. I just want better traction than the 15in tyres provide. The video gives me a much better understanding of the overall mechanism. In my case I will need to remove the main axle since the kit includes a different axle. I loved seeing the melted snowman cookies. I note you have two blast gates on the garage door. I presume this is for some ventilation/exhaust without having to open the garage door. Clever.
Great video Darren. Only thing I would have added was a fuel cut - off valve to ensure the engine carburetor could be run DRY. The alcohol in fuel is just too nasty to leave in a carburetor - ESPECIALLY between seasons. Ideally, I would even DRAIN the tank as well. The only alternative to this is to use ALCOHOL FREE fuel, and that is an expensive alternative, but do able. Merry Christmas!
this is by far the best video out there seen a bunch of them but your video's are just superb with all the details from the way you disassemble to the way you reassemble is just superb especially for a person wanting to learn like me ... great vids if i had 4 thumbs it would be 4 thumbs up ! lol
Thanks for all your videos hope you had a merry Christmas and I hope you're gonna have a happy new year keep up the videos very entertaining and educational
You were fortunate to get the wheels off. I like your combo lathe/vertical mill. I always do radial sanding of the drive disc with rough grade sanding media, It should not be super smooth or the driven wheel will slip sooner. If you did not have to dress the drive wheel, just remove the 3 bolts for the friction drive and pull shaft part way out. Nice and thorough job.
Nice repair and also nice that you have a parts store that carries that type of thing so nearby. I know you checked the condition and operation of the other parts of the snow blower before returning it to the owner. Just wish you had shown us. (sniffle tear sniffle tear) I'm guessing 3 of the snowmen got lost for some odd reason somewhere and only one made it to the wife - haha? Thank you for taking the time and effort of sharing all the interesting, enjoyable and educational content with us over the years! I for one really appreciate it and look forward to each episode! Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas and hope you have a great year in 2017!
I almost blew hot coffee thru my nose when Herr Doktor Professor Mustie opened that tin of cookies. I'd just finished today's 4 Winn Dixie store backed chocolate chip cookies washed down with a glass of 1 % milk. His timing is impeccable again. I really like his milling skills. I'm jealous of his mini mill. I'm looking for a Dremel version right now as I'm thinking of getting into homebuilt RC amphibious (Coast Guard twin engined liveried white with the racing stripe Grumman HU16e Albatross if I can find plans) airplanes and boats as I live in an gated apartment complex with a small lake.
I had the same thing happen to me when ordering a friction disc for the similar Craftsman 11 hp model. I was all excited that the part came in so quick, then realized it was larger too.
Love watching your videos very impressed with your work I was wondering if you would do a video on your lathe I just picked up an enco just like it and wanted to see how you have yours set up
I know you too well I know you do well man I was about to say just for s**** and giggles and you said it I'm a bit sick right now so could you please pray for me
Interesting now I know how they work we don't have them in england but I've seen them being used when I've been skiing in france... Another cool video..... :-).... loved the speeded up bit u sounded funny...
Your audio has blown my speaker on my projector thanks a lot RUclips for allowing the audio on this Chanel to broadcast at such a extreme level that it caused harm to my equipment and ears !
I did this last summer on the free side of the road blower I picked up. PITA, but a bit of work and money spent for a really nice 8hp 2 stage blower with a 36in width was a nice find.
At 34:13 I can hear those last two terrified snow guys saying, "It's either your or me now, Burt, so who's it gonna be?". . . Well, it's the last day of October 2019, and I'm watching Mustie mending a snowblower and thinking, "I really need to get me one of these. . . . " - I have about 180 yards of driveway to the public road, and though we don't get massive amounts of snow, nor do we get it regularly, shovelling is not an option for me, and last time, it took four and a half hours with a tractor and fore-end loader (lots of back and forth shuttling and running about to dump the buckets of snow) - I'm pretty sure it wouldn't take above an hour to clear with a snowblower like this, or that big beast parked in Mustie's yard there! I never really realised how simple these machines are, until I started watching a few of Mustie's snowblower videos.
This video proves case in point that with a little work and know how equipment is worth repairing instead of replacing. Sure its a case by case decision, but this machine was worth saving for sure. They should get AT LEAST a few more winters out of it if its taken care of. Nice work!
Saved $50 bucks on turning the drive plate. Taking the rust off and adding grease is something a lot of shops probably don’t do, good job.
You do fine work, sir, I respect a man who treats other people's equipment as he would treat his own.
your neighbors are fortunate to have you. most of the small engine businesses in my neck of the woods have folded up. I been working on my stuff the past 6 yrs. this channel is an excellent reference.

Mustie it’s great to see your attention to detail for us dummies, I appreciate learning for my own applications, you are truly a marvel to watch.
Even if I never use your wheel-removal-by-punching-the-axle trick, It was fabulous to see you execute it. Thanks for all the fine videos, Mustie1.
Great videos Mustie. I look forward to watching what you are often wrenching on. I grew up in a rust belt area and know all too well about cutting rust rot out of panels, trying to free up rusty bolts, and etc... I look forward to your next project.
Good fix Darrin. May the Lord bless you as you celebrate his birthday.
Just watched this, really like it when there is beat it to fit, paint it to match is involved. great vid, have learned a lot about snow blowers, mostly rains hear in Indiana, but the humor and good old school way you work is great. Thank you.
Merry Christmas to you and the Mrs and the happiest of New years. Thank you for the entertainment and knowledge.
4 years later and the gift is still giving, glad I found such a great vid on my model, THANKS!

I really enjoy watching a guy in his shot who DOESN'T curse every third word. Thank you.
My thoughts exactly. When that starts I don't even finish watching.
BA
Agree
BA cursing while working is half the fun
Mr Mustie 1 . I have a lot of respect for a person that takes care of other people's things with care
I enjoy watching your video's where you work on so many things I've never seen apart. It is fun to see what failed and how things tick! Was doubting on how good that disk would clean up with some meat left. That turned out really nice.
I learn a lot from you Derril or Darren. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with all of us. Keep it up old friend.

Anyone else here just to see an old-school mustie1 vid even though you've see it already?
yep!

Nice fix, Mustie. I always enjoy your videos. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
I admire your patience !! Good work!
Awesome vid...Ariens blowers are the best. That one is very similar to my '77, which is still running strong with only annual oil changing and lubrication.
This is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Very nice. I could not find a video for my exact model until yours. Thank you!
hope it works out for you

Thanks for all your videos hope you had a merry Christmas and I hope you're gonna have a happy new year keep up the videos very entertaining and educational
Mustie, you have a twisted sense of humor, love it! keep it up
I am in California watching a guy fix a snowblower.
The joys of the RUclips.
I live in the Sierras in California and we get quite a bit of snow. In fact it's snowing right now!
The drive system reminds me of the old Snapper lawnmower that I used too ride around on while mowing the yard(2.5) acres. Merry Christmas.
That drive design has been used by everyone at one time or another.
Sometimes you wish you have an extra hand. Nice video lot of fun with old snowblowers!!
You were fortunate to get the wheels off. I like your combo lathe/vertical mill.

Great entertainment and How-to diagnose and fix a fiction-drive implement video. This is what I wait for and enjoy. Thanks.
Thanks so much...was able to fix mine after seeing this...before the snow arrives...
Nice repair and also nice that you have a parts store that carries that type of thing so nearby. I know you checked the condition and operation of the other parts of the snow blower before returning it to the owner. Just wish you had shown us. (sniffle tear sniffle tear)

Nice job with the lathe. Brought back a lot of memories

You're a good neighbor Mustie. Merry Christmas.

On Ariens. On Honda. On Toro and Murray! On Snapper. On Troy-bilt. Clear that snow in a hurry!

There's no problem on this channel's audio. You probably had your gain set too high by mistake.
Always the best work. Merry Christmas! And happy new year! Mustie1
Great video. I enjoy your videos since my health don't let me do this work anymore.
Me too buddy-loved to do this kind of stuff!
Good job, Mustie1! Your snowman cookies had a look of fear in their eyes!
I did this last summer on the free side of the road blower I picked up. PITA, but a bit of work and money spent for a really nice 8hp 2 stage blower with a 36in width was a nice find.

Nice to see the 3 in 1 machine get some face time. I don't recall a vid showing that you got a new compound for it. Btw, Merry Christmas.
l just never got around to making one on it,
nice fix , merry christmas and happy new year
thanks for reminding me I have to get mine ready for this winter
Thank you very much for the detailed video.
The man of much patience-bravo!
Love your videos merry christmas
You are awesome nice job merry xmass and grettins from México
Nice lathe work. I'm sure your friend appreciated the money you saved them.
I need to get a snow blower, in case it snows down here in Fla. You gotta plan ahead.
Better check Craig's List :)
Charles Miller and
This video proves case in point that with a little work and know how equipment is worth repairing instead of replacing. Sure its a case by case decision, but this machine was worth saving for sure. They should get AT LEAST a few more winters out of it if its taken care of. Nice work!
Great. You know your machines. Keep up the good videos
That drive disk cleaned up nice and there was plenty of meat on it and the springs take care of the reduced thickness.
They was melting anyway , you just put them out of their misery ! LOL
Good thing you were able to keep that one hand clean for the cookie. Have a great Xmas O Ye Of Must.
great video. people don't realize how much labor is involved in changing that friction disk
You must have been taught by the same teacher as me. Merry Christmas.
