Phogoth is the reason I started playing Destiny. Right before Dark Below came out I was at a friends house and saw him play the strike. That same day I got all the money I had saved up and went to GameStop to buy Destiny. They even gave me a Dark Below poster which I had hung up in my room until earlier this year when my cat tore it down. Hive Ogres are one of my favorite designed enemies.

I remember doing a patrol on Savathun's Throne World where Immaru said that a new Ogre was leading some squad of Hive on a mission. The player, of course, goes to kill it. I thought it was weird that an ogre was in charge, 'cause I always thought they were mindless killing machines. I guess it makes sense that they have heightened cunning too, then.
What’s deadly is the Rise of Iron strike where a Devil Splicer experiments on an ogre effectively blinding it and turning its eye into a gun while able to control the damned thing. Those were some ooommmph nightfalls.
They’re genuinely triggering. Maybe because of the rate at which the blasts come out, but in harder content, it feels like looking at a ogre means certain danger. Couple that with a void threat modifier, and you’re pretty much looking at certain death at times. Especially if caught out in the open.

Pretty sure golgorath was also the only ogre in all destiny lore to actually speak at all. (Could be wrong on that, need to catch up on my lore books,) In some of the court of oryx stories golgorath is confirmed speaking to oryx with pretty clear speech in some parts.
I remember a old lore card talking about their creation Basically as part of their torture they are fed light but also tortured with it, kind of like a hardcore drug addict may hate the thing they are addicted to but are still addicted to it Ogres are basically tortured with their food, which is why they hate giardians so much: walking food that hits back and is the entire reason they exist in the form they do
Damn I still remember seeing Phogoth for the first time. Was such a terrifying experience since I was jumping around the pillars trying not to be anywhere near the ground. Then I tried the Phogoth Nightfall and realized how scary he can really be.

This actually sorta answered my question about the sentience of the hive in general. Like I didn't know if most of them were a sorta "Hive mind" like the name, or more independent. As someone who isn't a huge destiny lore person its interesting to know that even a thrall can have its own worm

this should have been more obvious. It was probably the giant laser some shoot out of their eye that made me think they were something entirely different than thralls.
The crazy thing I learned a long time ago is that, the purple attack they do isn't actually a beam or physical attack, it's the ogre actually staring at you to death.
It would be cool to see their uncontrollable rage in game. Imagine ogres just ripping through knights and thrall to get at us. Thrall, thrall flying everywhere!😂

So thrall evolve into acolyte. Acolyte evolve into a knight or wizard depending on what item they're holding when they level up and ogres are regional variants
I always believed that it was Thrall to Acolyte to Wizard/Knight, and if the thrall failed to satiate their worm, they'd become cursed thralls, and if they fail to die from that, go further to Ogres.
Ogres maybe have one of the best aimbot in the game with their laser especially in grandmaster and nightfall they sometime can be a heavy weight for the mission especially with those aimbot

I'd assume not leading as in 'coordinating' but more so as the siege weapon, first in combat as the big distraction and killer.
