I remember being told to squat like the 3rd variation and i was alwayd so focused and my squats would never improve as much. I started doing the second one and it was always most comfortable for me and now a year later im at a 315 squat
Yeah it always felt so awkward for me. Its hard to describe..... like my hips couldnt move me upwards being leaned back like that? IDK. But i ignored the advice and did a squat in the way that feels natural to me. This ended up being a more narrow foot stance, feet about 30 degrees outward, and forward knee travel. I went from struggling to do more than 5 on 225 to doing 315 for 5 in a year, and really no pain at all in my joints.
*I just hit 315 myself after years of holding back on heavy leg days from tearing my ACL in basketball. It's a rough 315 tho I gotta remind myself to breath coming back up but I get that shit....feels good to be in that 3 plate club, it's only up from here* 💪🏾💪🏾
@ who cares? My 1rm is 355, I rarely see anyone else doing 3 plates with proper depth. Theres always someone stronger. And apparently, theres always some cocksucker to come along and bash others on their achievements too.
Mate my exact scenario had a sports teacher when I was in college nag me about this and I always hated squatting ever since because never felt right doing it the third way but I hate doing exercises wrong so it stuck with me so glad i can squat the comfortable way without feeling like I am doing it wrong
Thank you so much Jeff, I never did squats due to pain in the knees and I hate not being able to do them, because I understand how important of an exercise they are. It all changed now, and I don't feel any pain, except in the right muscles. Once again, thanks!
He hates them because his knees are trashed. There's nothing inherently wrong with the exercise it's actually amazing at strengthening the patellar tendons along with the reverse nordics
My first year of squatting I tried so hard to sit back into my squat because that's what I was told. It kept bugging my knees an legs. But I learned about this proper form from someone else. Regardless, I'm glad Jeff is addressing this because so many knees are going to be saved long term.
Saw my first ‘Knees over toes guy video’ today and now I’m all confused again regarding the sissy squat. I hope Jeff one day will touch on the things that this guy is teaching. Because it seems like he helped a lot of people as well. My knees still hurt like hell when I squat even after watching and incorporating all these tips from Jeff over the years.
Check if you have flat feet. I could never go over 150lb for 5 reps squatting, cause they kept caving in due to my flat feet. My feet are just crippled :(
Actually i had chronic knee pain since years.. Did the knee over toes split squats etc for a week after watching knee over toes guy and now my knee doesn't hurt anymore.. I have torn meniscus and that also seems like healing.
I’ve found a few good exercises from this guy but kneesovertoes is the training revolution I can’t begin to describe how much it has changed my life remember when we were kids and sissy squats were so easy then high school came and some trainer told us to never do that? Downhill from there this guy is a square
Just did the "air squat" version of this and I had no knee pain at all! I used to not allow my knees to go past my toes. Will try with weights! This is awesome!
Excellent form advice here Jeff. I spoke with the Strength and Conditioning coach for the Huskies a few years back and he talked about informing his athletes to squat with their big toes in the air. Of course this is a slight exaggeration of the form he was actually looking for, but goes a long way towards aligning the track of the kinetic chain!
It makes sense, what Jeff's describing is the most natural way to do squats. If you do high-rep bodyweight squats that's exactly the form that your body pushes you do to because you remain in balance. Sometimes I think that people get their deadlift and squat form mixed up..
Spread the toes then lift the Big toe. I used to tell my clients to do that alllll the time when I was a trainer. Such a tiny cue made the hugest difference, doesn't matter whether you're a squat, a press....so long as it's closed chain
I understand you bro, feels annoying when you're minding your business squatting in the rack then some dude come over and says "the knees are not supposed to go over the toes". If anything, knees going over the toe slightly feels more natural when squatting deeper
So help me god if this ever happened to me while doing my perfectly executed aesthetic thiccboy Olympic highbar beauty squats. Can't stand the "low-bro" gang.
@@colin8601 not sure if that was directed at me but if it was, let me just say that I'm asian and squatting lower is more comfortable then stopping at 90°. But hey im just a dumbass, what do I know💁
This man knows what he is talking about. Because of his video "How to fix Plantar-fasciitis" i am now pain free for almost a year now, and i am truly very thankful to him.
I am so thankful for this channel. I knew I was supposed to let my knees go past my toes but I had no idea HOW to let my knees past my toes. Your channel is an absolute treasure trove of information
I know it’s late for this video. But I recently found out about knees over toes guy and wanted to see if you had any relevant information. I think a video of you reviewing his exercises would be helpful. He does stuff like the sissy squat and seems to have a compelling argument for why you should do them. Love your videos man!
Good to have it confirmed that the knees should go over the toes. I have a childhood injury that causes the patella of my right leg to not travel across the knee properly and the same leg is open more than normal. So I really have to focus when I do any kind of squatting, particularly loaded squats with barbells. I've found that going over my toes just a bit helps avoid pain in that knee most of the time. The flexing your toes up when descending is something I'll try today during my workout. Thank you so much.
I've been doing it right, yay! I tried keeping the knees back behind the toes, but couldn't do it. I just accepted that it was my bodies limitation. It felt way more natural to just focus on my center of gravity and keep it on the middle on my foot, regardless of how far my knees go farward.
So funny how I went from doing squads "incorrectly" to "correctly" but my knees felt worse than before. Now it makes sense. My previous incorrect squads were correct whole time :D
Jeff, I am a NASM certified trainer. With that said.......I appreciate all the DETAILED info you post!! Not only does it allow me to help clients in everyday day life, but has also helped me a ton!!! I am one that before I introduce something to my clients, I apply it to myself first!! I have less pain, look better, and made serious gains!! Thanks buddy!!!!
Very underrated tip! Almost nowhere else online will you hear people talking about the cue to allows freedom at the knee joint during the squat. For months I was trying to learn the back squat by only sitting back, and it caused me a hell of a lot of knee discomfort and made the exercise so much harder. As soon as I started allowing my knees to travel forward I felt stronger and the knee pain vanished.
What the hell! This is the first time I've ever heard this! I've been consistently taught wrong all my life. No wonder I hate squats so much and no wonder it gives me knee problems! This whole time I've been trying to have "perfect form" and not let my knees cross my feet!
I give you total props for how well you give pointers and teach the anatomical/fundamental movements of how exercises are properly done. The way you explain things is so understandable. Great work!
Love this. SO much more comfortable, and I can easily go ass to grass this way. I always wondered why something that should be so straightforward as a squat has been turned into this overly complex, even Byzantine ritual.
Great video! Thank you Jeff for the detailed, professional explanation. I look forward to having a well paid job in part so I can get a paid subscription lol. Now that I'm in my thirties I've started to really feel the difference that carrying out movements correctly makes not just for strength but also longevity, and the wealth of advice that's in your channel in this regard is priceless! Cheers!
FINALLY !!!! Someone who says it !!!!!! I have always been suspicious of that "correct" squat position (i.e. knee behind/above toes line) as sometimes i had some pain. On average i was 50/50 above toes line and beyond toes line. Knowing your level of expertise Jeff, you are the only one whom i trust when it is about physical exercise. Other channels may show guys with good OUTSIDE results, but surely many of those guys keep silent the pains they go through daily and the continuous damage they keep creating ... and that idiotic motto: No Pain No Gain doesn't help to act smarter !!!! I am looking to be fit, strong, smoothly flexible and healthy for the next 40 years and more; not to be done by age 45, feeling pain in every move i make. The 1990s mentality has already screwed up my body well enough... Thank you a lot Jeff to contribute to our generation's well-being!! Wish you well, and i genuinely hope that that last move didn't hurt you too badly (your facial expression showed concern)
First time to comment on here, because Yes! This aligns with everything I have been reading to figure out how to improve my squats. Mechanics are important. I've really become a fan of this channel since I managed to get a light bulging disc. Looking for more effective and safer ways to exercise, but I have to be creative. No money, so can't go to the gym or buy any new equipment like a pull-up bar or bands. Even if I could, this house is so old that there is no safe place to anchor them. Been trying to go to the park for at least some of the exercises to build up back strength, but man, weather sucks and the nearest park I can get to doesn't have an exercise place. Your dumbbell series has been super helpful in giving me creative ideas to overcome my limitations, as were some of the home workouts. But this one just put the icing on the cake for me.
Great video! I just don’t agee with barbell squats. After 32 years of working out I have seen the most injuries from this exercise along with deadlifts. Stick to dumb bell squats, hack squats or hex bar squats. Bar bell squats are not an essential exercise. You may not agree with me now but stay consistently working out for the next 30 years and you’ll change your mind as well.
When I do the squat with knees going past the toes as you say is best, I get knee pain. When I do it with my knees level with my toes and my butt out I get no knee pain.
Good content which provides necessary info and explanation without all the extra fluff. Would like to see the perfect Upper and Lower workouts in the perfect workout series.

Imagine you're such a bad exercise that Jeff Cavaliere himself won't (and can't) do a single rep of you. Damn, he hates sissy squats.
He hates them because his knees are trashed. There's nothing inherently wrong with the exercise it's actually amazing at strengthening the patellar tendons along with the reverse nordics
*Tom Platz would like to know your location
When youre so early you cant even lose the giveaway
It's because Jeff is not actually an expert.
Jeff is a bit out of touch and pretty biased. Never felt more athletic then doing kneesovertoes program, its legit
Sometimes I trust Jeff more than I trust myself
Lmao
Excellent form advice here Jeff. I spoke with the Strength and Conditioning coach for the Huskies a few years back and he talked about informing his athletes to squat with their big toes in the air.
Of course this is a slight exaggeration of the form he was actually looking for, but goes a long way towards aligning the track of the kinetic chain!
It makes sense, what Jeff's describing is the most natural way to do squats. If you do high-rep bodyweight squats that's exactly the form that your body pushes you do to because you remain in balance.
Sometimes I think that people get their deadlift and squat form mixed up..
Ryan Barrett so often that happens in both exercises
Spread the toes then lift the Big toe. I used to tell my clients to do that alllll the time when I was a trainer. Such a tiny cue made the hugest difference, doesn't matter whether you're a squat, a press....so long as it's closed chain
@@davidkymdell452 what does closed chain mean?
@@orangeslices50505 Means your hands or feet are in a fixed position throughout the exercise. In this case, your feet are on fixed on the ground.
Finally Jeff has spoken. I've been confronted in the gym about doing that in my squats I lost counts. Really annoying
But hey im just a dumbass, what do I know💁
@@colin8601 and a side note, I never ever bitch to anyone about their workout, everyone's got their own goals amirite?
This man knows what he is talking about. Because of his video "How to fix Plantar-fasciitis" i am now pain free for almost a year now, and i am truly very thankful to him.
This is a great video to know and tell lots of people who think knees should never go past your toes that they are full of crap!
Most valuable squatting video on RUclips for people with knee pain!
"Knees OVER toes". Actually quite simple. Literally... ^^
7:19 hearing Jeff saying he loves me motivates me to go back at the gym right after i killed my workout
He tells this to everyone
@@99Gara99 r/wooosh
THANK YOU FOR THIS. For months I have been trying to "fix" my squat meanwhile there was nothing wrong with it.
I am so thankful for this channel. I knew I was supposed to let my knees go past my toes but I had no idea HOW to let my knees past my toes. Your channel is an absolute treasure trove of information
This is the best video. I injured my knees with wrong squatting ,by locking knee motion. Yes, we need to keep the tension going all the way to feet.
Lately I've been watching so many Jeff's videos that I had a dream one night where I was so ripped that people didn't believe I was all natural lol
7 :20 " I love you guys so much"
made my day Jeff
Great job, because of this channel I actually got to Squat properly and deal with the issues I had in my knee, ankle and hip. TIPPING MY HAT!
M'tibia 🤠
When you're so early that he hasn't even posted the video yet.
I've been doing it right, yay! I tried keeping the knees back behind the toes, but couldn't do it. I just accepted that it was my bodies limitation. It felt way more natural to just focus on my center of gravity and keep it on the middle on my foot, regardless of how far my knees go farward.
Yo guys after half a year I've finally won the giveaway😀
Brilliant! What'd you get?
Congrats man!
Congratulations!
What'd you get?

I feel like this should’ve been the first video you ever made. I been squatting wrong for over a decade. Going to try this tonight.
Best channel for fitness hands down. Always learning something new from u jeff.
So funny how I went from doing squads "incorrectly" to "correctly" but my knees felt worse than before. Now it makes sense. My previous incorrect squads were correct whole time :D
It's unclear what kinda squats you were doing
I’m ready to lose the competition
Get in line
What competition? It’s a giveaway
I noticed the band on the barbell when the video started. I was thinking “Is Jeff gonna do the Heria?”
Guess this explains why my knees sounded like rice crispies when I THOUGHT I was squatting right.
Snap crackle pop n all the way to Snap city.
that hurt me by only reading it 🤯😣
Same, man. That method caused years of undue pain.
Who is this jesse's hands? We need an intro for that.
What the hell! This is the first time I've ever heard this! I've been consistently taught wrong all my life. No wonder I hate squats so much and no wonder it gives me knee problems! This whole time I've been trying to have "perfect form" and not let my knees cross my feet!
Guy in the gym came up to me & told me to keep knees aligned with feet and shoulders. Jeff, you have corrected someone once again.
I give you total props for how well you give pointers and teach the anatomical/fundamental movements of how exercises are properly done. The way you explain things is so understandable. Great work!

Don't forget all the "funny" jokes that gets repeated ad nauseam...
Heaaaaaaad, shoulders, knees and toes, knees and toes!
Probably what this is about.
You're not wrong.
When your so early he hasn’t added a thumbnail
No wonder I've been getting that sharp stabbing pain because I've not been allowing my knees to go past my toes. No more knee pain now, love u Jeff!
best fitness channel on youtube, PERIOD.
5:56 Jeff teasing us. Glutes muscle marker video incoming!
Ive been waiting so long
Love this. SO much more comfortable, and I can easily go ass to grass this way. I always wondered why something that should be so straightforward as a squat has been turned into this overly complex, even Byzantine ritual.
One point for "Byzantine" and referencing an orthodoxy
This Is incredible advice. My squat is terrible, and trying to really focus on form improvement
You just saved my squat for lifetime by this...... Thanks a lot👌🏻♥️👑
This is exactly why I love this channel and this program. It's effective and safe.
Cheers!
This is the first exercise, as in ever, from all that I do, that after watching Jeff's video, I found out I was doing right. It's hard to believe :)
Jeff Cavaliere about tibia :
"let it go, let it gooo"
I’ll give you a workout you won’t believe
MORE JESSE INTROS!!!
Great video! I need a refresher on squat form becauze of the wink. All your squat videos have been great!
If you pitched up Jeff's voice slightly he would sound like Jerry Seinfeld
Hahahha i always kinda thought that he sounded like jerry at times lol
Lmao
What's the deal with squats anyway?!
he always reminds me of Ross from friends haha
Just sitting here clicking refresh, no pinned comment yet :(
I was doing 100% correct my whole squats work out
First time to comment on here, because Yes!
Shoutout to Jesse for the comedic relief love the channel!
I'm so early that i missed the giveaway
Here before the giveaway.....hurry up so I can take my loss! 😁
Umm... Jeff, why were you squatting in the *curl rack?*
Because Jeff does whatever Jeff wants.
Next question.
@@solascriptura-e7t do u even realize what the joke was
Great video!
I just don’t agee with barbell squats.
After 32 years of working out I have seen the most injuries from this exercise along with deadlifts.
Stick to dumb bell squats, hack squats or hex bar squats.
Bar bell squats are not an essential exercise.
You may not agree with me now but stay consistently working out for the next 30 years and you’ll change your mind as well.
wow , what a mindblowing research. love your work... u r helping me to help others. A BIG THANKS

When I do the squat with knees going past the toes as you say is best, I get knee pain. When I do it with my knees level with my toes and my butt out I get no knee pain.
