I think the good thing about River Park Rumble is it reminds you this game is taking place during Christmas which always gave it a pretty dark tone (not over-the-edge dark like Black). Over the years I actually like TM1 the most due to the atmosphere and how it feels like a 70s/80s B-action movie as opposed to trying to be more comic book-like in TM2/Head On or something dreary and bleak like Black. In my eyes it is probably the perfect mix of both those worlds where you get that zany batshit craziness but also enough of the dark and deranged without one overdoing it over the other. It also helps that a lot of the vehicles take clear inspiration from other things from movies to comic books. Crimson Fury is clearly some James Bond-esque vehicle, Spectre is like Stephen King's Christine, Mr. Grimm is basically Ghost Rider, Darkside is the huge truck from the movie Duel, etc.
Crimson Fury sound effect for his special is also made to sound exactly like part of the Bond Theme. Also remember Black is supposed to be set in Sweet Tooth (Needles/Marcus Kane's head) whereas the first and second games are not. (Marcus Kane is the driver of Minion in TM Black and says he "Misses the Old Colorful World") Coincidentally, the driver for Manslaughter (Black) in TM Black is the demon that Darkside (Mr. Ash) is looking for in TM1 and retrieves in his lost ending. I also wish they didn't cut out the ending movie for Yellow Jacket (Charlie Kane) because it sets up him as being the driver of Dark Tooth for TM2. There are vague hints in TM2 ("You killed my son!") and ("Heads up you freak") then it describes the driver being a crazy old man. The true ending of TM1 is a little tricky though. TM2 reveals Outlaw won TM1 and he got sent into space, that's why there's a new driver. Best assumption is the Twisted Metal contest continued after Outlaw was sent into space and then Yellow Jacket won.
Honestly, TM1 had the best Roadkill look in the series. And I wish the newer games had the first person camera options. I always loved that everyone got their own dashboard overlay.
The game being from 1995 is crazy because Twisted Metal is pretty much the oldest and the first mainstream IP by Sony. If you check the list of games published by Sony before TM1, it's mostly license anime games or license car games or co-published PS1 version of games by other companies and the one that are published by Sony didn't make any success or impact (like the 1994 Motor Toon Grand Prix by Japan Studio). TM1 was Sony's first golden goose. In fact, Sweet Tooth is the oldest PlayStation mascot. Older then Crash, Spyro, Parappa, Ratchet, Sly, Kratos, Nathan Drake, Joel, etc... which is crazy when you think about it
I always liked the first twisted metal game. Each level felt like a realistic progression especially at the time. While the music and the levels arent memorable the layout was pretty good. Even for first time players they wont get lost.
When fighting minion. I get inside the pyramid in the hallway. If you get in the right spot the game will glitch like a wallhack. When he gets in the hall a lot of the time he gets stuck long enough to pummel him.
Very good review, TM1 is my favorite in the series. I'm glad you talked about the PC version, it's the definitive version in my opinion. With the revisions to specials and enhanced graphics that you mentioned, as well as being able to play with controller joysticks on that version, completely changes the experience. Side note for some reason I really love how defeated cars stay on the battlefield until the level is over, burnt up and broken.
I always thought those "Refs" were actually the National Guard trying to put a stop to the tournament and Minion was called in by the National Guard seeing how he was a Tank.
I'm that weirdo who prefers TM1 to TM2 (and TM3 & TM4 to TM2). I do have nostalgia for this game (got it back in 1999 and the franchise stuck with me ever since then). I'm curious to play through the PC version (I think it visually looks like the "definitive version" of TM1). Thanks for putting up a link for us to enjoy this time capsule of gaming history and culture.
Has to be one of the top 3 TM games in the series in my opinion. Sure it has it's faults but it's still a game I can pick up and play without any issues and enjoy. It's also the first video game I remember playing as a kid!
Twisted Metal 1. The Ending Cut scenes. I believe i owed the copy that had the endings. The early version of the games had them. Sadly ex has my old games :( you can get it. But its quite pricey for one of those us or uk early versions. I forget which region & Expensive. Crazy thing is. This was easy to look up 12 years ago when i got Twisted Metal 1. Now i cant find any information. I think you needed the large non jeweled case game. Is the original. But i don't remember if you need uk or us version.
It's very fun. I like the little more realism compared to the later entries in the 1-2-head on series, many of them actually get what they want from calypso. The music is sublime it's such a vibe and the levels are all fantastic, it feels more like a real world than the levels in 2, LA in 2 doesnt feel like LA at all in comparison to this game. The driving is also a bit tighter than 2 which is quite nice and the fact that ramming is really emphasised feels really nice, hammerhead is actually a very good vehicle in this game for this reason. It's also way easier than 2, not so easy that its boring but it doesnt drive you insane like 2 does, its fairly easy to finish the game with each vehicle on your first try without using any codes.
I played Tm2 first and then i played Tm1, and my first impression of Sweet Tooth's special in TM1 one visually, was a thrown hotdog on fire. Lmao. I was expecting the big Pink bouncy pixel and instead saw a hotdog on fire that has no tracking hahaha, i was all, "what the hell is this." I never unsaw it either, i just remember TM1 as the hotdog on fire turd looking projectile. Though i do love Tm1. I still have my Early PS1 big box version. I wonder why they stopped the big box, it was unique looking.
The remastered version of 1 and 2 that are on PSN are actually HARDER than the OG versions. They nerfed some cars and buffed others and made the AI a lot harder even on the easier difficulties.
I don't agree with the idea of smaller levels, i prefer the bigger ones, more ability to create advantages and disadvantages. Its essentially a third person shooter with wheels with the arena feel of a first person one
It does run smoother with a higher refresh rate, a lot better than using frame rate code on PS1 version. I guess it’s slightly faster but not enough to ruin the experience of it.

In 2025 the game will be 30 years old
That's actually insane to think about
Shut up. I am not old

I was just about to comment this but I am glad someone else did, I love Kong lmao.
I'm pretty sure I'll still enjoying this game in 2028. This original OST is still pretty good. I prefer original OST in games
TM1 is underrated. Without it the series would have never have happened and the atmosphere is great. Possibly has the best vibes in the series.
Would've never happened without Fighting games & Super Mario Kart & Rock N Roll Racing. 😉
@@Wallace007-q1x Hmm maybe. It’s pretty much just a fighting game with cars.
@@BigSlick98 Everything is influenced by something

I agree with you Kong on Rooftop’s skybox. To me it’s like a Hell On Earth appearance

I've blown myself up countless times running into Darkside, Hammerhead , and Warthog after they've died.
It's crazy to think this game is almost 30 years old!
I'm still playing the first part.
You forgot to mention 2 things.
1) Bonus battle if you beat the game on hard.
2) Cut down maps in the Duel mode
What's the Bonus Battle?
I still enjoy playing this game.
The working title for this game used in the "Lost Endings" beta of this masterpiece was "High Octane"
I am well aware of that, it's the reason I mentioned it.
As a wise man once said: “Twisted Metal 1 is a hood classic.”
I always thought those "Refs" were actually the National Guard trying to put a stop to the tournament and Minion was called in by the National Guard seeing how he was a Tank.

Yes it does played it for the first time this year and I had tons of fun trying to figure our strategies to beat the AI.

this game also has some deep lore. suprisingly
Absolutely love 1.
It’s tough it’s clunky but damn is it fun. Absolute blast to play. I really mean that.
Nice review, i hope you make videos like this with the other TM games, i'd love to hear your thoughts about them in a scripted video
From someone who played it when it was new. It was awesome. Now, it feels clunky.but it's good. And haaaard!
When level 3 came up, I thought I was going to see a sewer count.🤣

Yeah my version had them too and when I heard way later that not every body had those I thought I dreamed them up in some sort of fever dream
@@rightinthedome9973 yeah I wish we can find definitive answer but I think ai can't find it. Wish I knew if it's a certain region game or something.

I love TM1 my 3rd fav in the series. River park Rumble is the best level in the game

TM1 Theme is still great
Me loved this game
Why didn't oil puddles come back in Tm2?
Still love the "first person" in the car view of this one. Even though its a bitch to use all the time.
What are your emulator settings to make the game look so sharp and smooth?
Darksides ending is one of the greatest things in cinema history

I personally think this is the hardest game in the series
Question: did you notice Twisted Metal 1 PC is too fast on modern PC like Windows 10 Pro 64bit?
It does run smoother with a higher refresh rate, a lot better than using frame rate code on PS1 version. I guess it’s slightly faster but not enough to ruin the experience of it.
THERE IS A FAN MADE PC VERSION WITH UNLOCKED LEVELS lol
Thumper is the only gansta in 1-brawl lol

Getting older is realizing these games would have never been crwated if it wasnt for americas car culture.
It's a Solid game but the Gameplay is the weakest in the Series. It lacks Depth. It's more like DOOM in Cars than MK or SF in Cars.
i just played the ps classic version on ps5 and its bad. i played on an og ps1 and its bad. It didnt age well. twisted metal black did though
